È rivoluzionario anche per i temi trattati: contrariamente agli aedi, i cantori della poesia epica nata nei palazzi dell’epoca micenea per eternare le gesta degli eroi del passato, i poeti lirici cantano sé stessi, la propria esperienza individuale e i sentimenti. Archiloco, il loro capostipite, è uno dei primi poeti al mondo a usare la parola “io”, in autoritratti folgoranti. “Offrire al lettore almeno l’eco recondita dei trilli di cetra, degli squilli di flauto, delle note taglienti di iambuke” (uno strumento paragonabile alla nostra arpa) era il desiderio di Ezio Savino. Il suo sogno era catturare la musica perduta, “gli accordi taglienti di Archiloco, le melodie sensuali di Saffo, gli strappi imperiosi e partigiani di Alceo”, che forse ancora vagano nell’etere, onde sonore non più percepibili. Nell’attesa che sia messo a punto un congegno capace di captare questa musica, e che si realizzi “la magia di un intreccio tra note e parole”, le appassionate traduzioni di Ezio Savino riportano in vita la vivacità, l’esuberanza, la dolcezza, la malinconia della grande lirica greca. Il suo lavoro di resa poetica è stato integrato da Daniele Ventre, che ha curato anche il testo greco in base alle più aggiornate edizioni critiche.
