L'ouvrage se propose d'interroger quelques-unes des fonctions de la lecture, notamment celle d'outil ordinaire du travail universitaire. Parmi les sujets abordés, on relèvera l'examen des différentes pratiques de lecture en Langue 1 et en Langue 2, le rôle des interactions lecture-écriture dans différents contextes nationaux, mais aussi la question des transferts de compétences en langue 1 et 2. Il s'agit en particulier de savoir comment les capacités de lecteurs en langue 1 sont mobilisées lors de la lecture en langue 2 et en quoi elles permettent de compenser partiellement les difficultés rencontrées. D'autres problèmes, comme celui que posent au lecteur des écrits de genres différents, aux caractéristiques textuelles et énonciatives spécifiques, fournissent la matière d'autres contributions. Book excerpt: In this study, originally published in 1986, Professor Charles Read examines the ways in which pre-school and primary children create spellings – or misspellings, as they appear to be. He focuses on the hidden phonetic bases for some frequent patterns in young children’s spelling, both in and out of school. Professor Read examines children’s spelling in other languages (Dutch, French, Spanish) as well as in various dialects of English, in order to see the influence of other sets of speech sounds and other standard spelling systems. Overall, the evidence suggests that children are very much affected by phonetic characteristics, as they tend to spell alike certain classes of speech sound which are indeed phonetically similar. In devising spellings, children can be remarkably independent and inventive in an activity which for adults is anything but creative, and Professor Read suggests ways in which educators can build upon this creativity.

Book excerpt: This book explores how the voices of authors and other researchers are manifested in academic discourse, and how the author handles the polyphonic interaction between these various parties. It represents a unique study of academic discourse in that it takes a doubly contrastive approach, focusing on the two factors of discipline and language at the same time. It is based on a large electronic corpus of 450 research articles from three disciplines (economics, linguistics and medicine) in three languages (English, French and Norwegian). The book investigates whether disciplines and languages may be said to represent different cultures with regard to person manifestation in the texts. What is being studied is thus cultural identities as tendencies in linguistic practices. For the majority of the features focused on (e.g. metatext and bibliographical references), the discipline factor turns out to contribute more strongly to the variation observed than the language factor. However, for some of the features (e.g. pronouns and negation), the language factor is also quite strong.
