Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is concerned with single drop hydrodynamic behaviour in a Rotating Disc Contactor (RDC). The first part of this thesis concerns how drops move in an RDC. It has been found that the drop velocity is different on the two sides of the disc and drop residence time at the rotor and stator occupied 25-40% of the whole residence time in a compartment. The second part of this thesis concerns drop breakage in a matched refractive index system in an RDC. The edge of the disc is a main drop breakage zone; two senu-empirical correlations based on Schlichting's boundary thickness theory and drop shape are offered for both larninar and turbulent cases. For a high viscosity continuous phase system, it was found that drop breakage probability as a fiinction of rotor speed was nearly a Delta ftinction. Drop breakage behaviour in a 600 mm RDC is very different from that in a small diameter RDC. Drop breakage in a drop swarm was also researched in this thesis. Critical rotor speed was uncertain in this case, so a statistical average critical rotor speed was suggested. The Mugele-Evans distribution fiinction still is the best one to express the resulting drop size distribution in the high viscosity continuous phase case. The third part of this thesis concerns moving drop shape. It has been found that the drop deformation zone is around the disc only and it is small relative to a compartment volume. Moving drop shape depends strongly on the drop path, and a drop may not change its original shape if it does not pass through the disc boundary layer. In the fourth part of this thesis a study was made to find how the single drop Residence Time Distribution in an RDC can be related to the dispersed phase axial mixing. It has been found that the Mugele-Evans distribution is the best function for expressing the RTD.

Download or read book Solvent Extraction 1990 written by T. Sekine and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solvent extraction is employed very widely in both fundamental research and technology because of the remarkable features of this simple but very effective technique for the separation of different materials. The International Solvent Extraction Conference 1990 was a forum for the presentation of papers on up-to-date research in this field. The collection of the papers in these volumes will be invaluable because information on solvent extraction is often scattered in various journals and proceedings which make the following of developments difficult.

Download or read book Mathematical Modelling of a Rotating Disc Contactor Column written by Jamalludin Talib and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a rotating disc contactor (RDC) column, the process of liquid-liquid extraction is brought about by dispersing one of the liquid phases into the other, the continuous phase (medium). The counter-current flow of the dispersed liquid, the drop phase, in the column is effected by the difference in densities of the two liquids. As the drops flow along the column, mass transfer takes place between the two phases and at the same time the drops may break into smaller drops as they hit the rotating discs which are located along the column. The modelling of the drop breakage and the mass transfer from a continuous phase to a dispersed phase are presented. The Monte Carlo approach to the prediction of drop size distribution along RDC columns is considered. Another, more efficient method referred to as the Expected Value method, is shown to produce a similar distribution. The mass transfer process from continuous phase to drop phase is based on the concept of diffusion in a sphere. Two models are considered, firstly the Initial Approach of Mass Transfer (IAMT), based on the start up process of drops entering a column with an undisturbed continuous phase, and secondly, the Boundary Approach of Mass Transfer (BAMT), based on the presence of drops throughout the length of the RDC column. Both the models achieve a steady-state process of mass transfer. The final outcome is combined breakage (DEVM) and mass transfer (IAMT) models used for the prediction of the performance of RDC columns.

Book Synopsis Chemical Engineering Volume 2 by : J H Harker
Download or read book Chemical Engineering Volume 2 written by J H Harker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 1219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Engineering Volume 2 covers the properties of particulate systems, including the character of individual particles and their behaviour in fluids. Sedimentation of particles, both singly and at high concentrations, flow in packed and fluidised beads and filtration are then examined. The latter part of the book deals with separation processes, such as distillation and gas absorption, which illustrate applications of the fundamental principles of mass transfer introduced in Chemical Engineering Volume 1. In conclusion, several techniques of growing importance - adsorption, ion exchange, chromatographic and membrane separations, and process intensification - are described. A logical progression of chemical engineering concepts, volume 2 builds on fundamental principles contained in Chemical Engineering volume 1 and these volumes are fully cross-referenced Reflects the growth in complexity and stature of chemical engineering over the last few years Supported with further reading at the end of each chapter and graded problems at the end of the book
