Book excerpt: Lipoproteins play an important role in maintaining the normal distribution of lipids in the body and in the transport of lipophilic compounds. They are also implicated, however, in some of the major diseases of the Western world including atherosclerosis, heart disease, and stroke. This has lead to a dramatic proliferation of lipoprotein research. This comprehensive volume analyzes the biological activity of lipoproteins. It provides detailed protocols for preparing and separating different lipoproteins, and includes methods for studying their metabolism, activity in different tissues, and interactions with receptors. Lipoprotein Analysis: A Practical Approach is an essential manual for all biomedical scientists studying these compounds including those interested in their role in diseases of the circulatory system

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lipoprotein Kinetics and Modeling contains some of the papers presented at a conference on the analysis and modeling of lipoprotein kinetic data held in Phoenix, Arizona. Contributions from both theorists and experimentalists who attended the conference focus on the developments in the use of mathematical modeling in analyzing the lipoprotein kinetics. The conference highlights the role of kinetic modeling in elucidating the dynamic processes involved in lipoprotein metabolism, the result of improper data analysis that can lead to erroneous physiological interpretations, and the emerging complexities in the lipoprotein system. Organized into six sections comprised of 37 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the theory and applications of kinetic analysis and modeling to lipoproteins. It then discusses the role of kinetic modeling in physiology, the kinetics of apoprotein B in humans, the use of kinetics in investigating the metabolism of very low and intermediate-density lipoproteins, and the models of plasma lipoprotein triglyceride kinetics. It explains the cholesterol kinetics and modeling, the kinetics of high density lipoprotein metabolism in humans, and various techniques for the analysis and modeling of lipoprotein kinetic data such as KABIS (kinetic analysis by interactive simulation) and CONSAM (conversational version of the SAAM modeling program). This book will be of interest to biologists, physiologists, clinical researchers and experts in computer technology and mathematics.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifies low density lipoproteins as the primary target of cholesterol-lowering therapy and emphasizes the role of clinical approach in primary prevention of coronary heart disease. Reports that dietary therapy remains the first line of treatment of high blood cholesterol and that drug therapy is reserved for patients considered to be at high risk for coronary heart disease. Features of this report that distinguish it from the first report are: increased emphasis on CHD risk status as a guide to type and intensity of cholesterol-lowering therapy; more attention to high density lipoprotein as a CHD risk factor; and increased emphasis on physical activity and weight loss as components of the dietary therapy of high blood cholesterol.

Book excerpt: Biochemistry of Lipids: Lipoproteins and Membranes, Volume Six, contains concise chapters that cover a wide spectrum of topics in the field of lipid biochemistry and cell biology. It provides an important bridge between broad-based biochemistry textbooks and more technical research publications, offering cohesive, foundational information. It is a valuable tool for advanced graduate students and researchers who are interested in exploring lipid biology in more detail, and includes overviews of lipid biology in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, while also providing fundamental background on the subsequent descriptions of fatty acid synthesis, desaturation and elongation, and the pathways that lead the synthesis of complex phospholipids, sphingolipids, and their structural variants. Also covered are sections on how bioactive lipids are involved in cell signaling with an emphasis on disease implications and pathological consequences. Serves as a general reference book for scientists studying lipids, lipoproteins and membranes and as an advanced and up-to-date textbook for teachers and students who are familiar with the basic concepts of lipid biochemistry References from current literature will be included in each chapter to facilitate more in-depth study Key concepts are supported by figures and models to improve reader understanding Chapters provide historical perspective and current analysis of each topic

Book excerpt: Now, based on the apoB algorithm, that is outlined and illustrated in this book, family physicians as well as cardiologists, endocrinologists and internists will be able to easily and accurately identify and treat these disorders. The apoB dyslipoproteinemias are major common causes of vascular disease. But until now, accurate diagnosis has not been possible. With just total cholesterol, triglycerides and apoB, all the apoB dyslipoproteinemias, with the exception of elevated Lp(a), can be identified using the apoB algorithm. The apoB app, which incorporates this algorithm, is available from both Apple and Android and is free.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amount of recent information collected about the molecular composition, structure, and function of the plasma lipoproteins, in man as well as in experimental animals, is very large. In this volume an assessment of our knowledge as it stands today has been organized within a framework of four general topics, the first about analytical data, the second about structure, the third about metab olism, and the last about molecular variation and pathology. Thus the analytical, theoretical, experimental, and applied aspects of the topic have been treated in conjunction with each other. The analytical data in human and nonhuman primates were obtained after ultracentrifugal or electrophoretic separation of the protein class from the native serum. Comparisons of various methods were not forgotten. The main categories of lipoproteins, namely High Density (HDL), Low Density (LDL), and Very Low Density (VLDL), are treated separately, and lipid moiety and the polypeptide moiety are carefully described. In the theoretical field of reassembly of lipoprotein particles by relipidizing delipidated polypeptides, the structural aspects of lipoprotein and the stabilizing effect of phospholipids on the poly peptide structure were studied. The opposite direction of the pro cess, namely degradation of a lipoprotein by means of lipolytic enzymes, has also been investigated and described.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this rapidly evolving field of research, an enormous amount of new knowledge of lipoprotein structure, function and metabolism has emerged. The 1985 Nobel Prize-winning pioneering work of Brown and Goldstein on the LDL receptor has had a profound impact on developments in the field. This work is one of the many subjects reviewed in detail in this book. The volume begins with chapters on structure, then proceeds to analysis of lipid and lipoprotein dynamics, metabolism, function, genetics, and molecular biology. Lipoprotein genetics in molecular biology, the role of lipoprotein receptors, and Lp(a) - a topic underrepresented in volumes on lipoproteins, are another three such topics in an impressive volume. This work will mainly be of interest to researchers interested in lipid and lipoprotein structure and metabolism, but will also be of great value to clinical medicine and biology in general.
