Book Synopsis Leadership at the Crossroads by : Joanne B. Ciulla
Download or read book Leadership at the Crossroads written by Joanne B. Ciulla and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-10-30 with total page 963 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is leadership? Not only has that question been debated since the beginning of human culture and society, but it's a moving target based on the definer, and the epoch. The definition can be thought-provoking and profound: A leader is best when people barely know he exists, not so good when people obey and acclaim him, worse when they despise him, (Lao Tzu, 6th century BC ). Or the profundity may lie shrouded in the prosaic: A leader is one who has followers, (Peter Drucker, 20th century). However you define the concept, today's challenges for leaders of all stripes are monumental, and the need for effective leadership is huge. More than anything, this set travels farther and digs deeper than most leadership books. It takes us from mere explanations of leadership to an understanding of it as part of the human condition. Reading it should be at the top of the to-do list for any leader in any era. In Leadership at the Crossroads, contributors from a wide variety of fields, including management, economics, political science, philosophy, sociology, history, literature, and psychology, explore the many facets of leadership. The set comprises: Volume 1: Leadership and Psychology; Volume 2: Leadership and Politics; Volume 3: Leadership and the Humanities. Collectively, this set showcases traditional and emerging approaches to leadership in both theory and practice and raises new questions brought on by society's new challenges. It also suggests solutions for developing and promoting leadership in the corporate world, politics and diplomacy, religion, education, non-profits, and the arts. Whether identifying qualities that will serve a U.S. president well, or the characteristics of the essential can-do supervisor in today's corporation, Leadership at the Crossroads supplies insights and intelligence that will help leaders make the most of the challenges and opportunities lying before them.
Book Synopsis Governance of Cons Passion by : A. Hunt
Download or read book Governance of Cons Passion written by A. Hunt and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-10-01 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the sumptuary laws that regulated conspicuous consumption in respect to dress, ornaments, and food that were widespread in late medieval and early modern Europe. It argues that sumptuary laws were attempts to stabilize social recognizability in the urban `world of strangers' and in the governance of cities. The gendered character of sumptuary laws are viewed as components of 'gender wars'. These laws are explored as projects directed at the reform of popular culture and in their links to the governance of vagrancy and of popular recreation. This study challenges the view that the sumptuary actually died and develops an argument that in the modern world the regulation of consumption persists, but becomes dispersed throughout a range of both public and private forms of governance. The conclusions stresses the persistence of projects of governance of personal appearance and of private consumption.

Book Synopsis Leonardo da Vinci: The Daedalian Mythmaker by :
Download or read book Leonardo da Vinci: The Daedalian Mythmaker written by and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is the first to consider the whole body of Leonardo's works with an eye to a comprehensive interpretation that combines both cultural history and the history of ideas. According to Maiorino, Leonardo's was a mythmaking mode of activity that had a Daedalian range and affected art and technology alike. As both artist and inventor, Leonardo did not separate reason from experience, empiricism from abstraction, an attitude Maiorino characterizes as "Anti-Humanism". Rather than accepting the earlier view that the culture of the Renaissance was divided against itself or that it came to be divided, he argues that anti-Humanism was present from the start in such founders as Petrarch and Alberti and continued to be a current in later authors and artists; hence the significance of Leonardo to Humanism and to Baroque and Renaissance culture at large.
Book Synopsis A Short History of Renaissance and Reformation Europe by : Jonathan W. Zophy
Download or read book A Short History of Renaissance and Reformation Europe written by Jonathan W. Zophy and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an effort to bridge the gap between the often different worlds of professors and students, this exploration of Renaissance and Reformation Europe offers an accessible, engaging approach that pays sufficient attention to the roles and contributions of women. Its conversational tone and concise presentation are examples of an approach that is more representative than comprehensive--introducing historical figures and concepts as they flow through the narrative, without frequent interruption to include and define technical and foreign terms. Rather than a compendium or grand "summa," the text serves as a brief introduction to some of the major personalities, issues, events and ideas of the Renaissance and Reformation age.
Book Synopsis Acts of Undressing by : Barbara Brownie
Download or read book Acts of Undressing written by Barbara Brownie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The act of undressing has a multitude of meanings, which vary dramatically when this commonly private gesture is presented for public consumption. This ground-breaking book explores the significance of undressing in various cultural and social contexts. As we are increasingly obsessed with dress choices as signifiers of who we are and how we feel, an investigation into what happens as we remove our clothes has never been more pertinent. Exploring three main issues - politics, tease, and clothes without bodies - Acts of Undressing discusses these key themes through an in-depth and eclectic mix of case studies including flashing at Mardi Gras, the World Burlesque Games, and 'shoefiti' used by gangs to mark territories. Building on leading theories of dress and the body, from academics including Roland Barthes and Mario Perniolato, Ruth Barcan and Erving Goffman, Acts of Undressing is essential reading for students of fashion, sociology, anthropology, visual culture, and related subjects.
