However, despite the variations, they all offer a consistent pro-innovation bias, dismissing resistance as irrational, and overlooking the value of non-users and collateral impacts. This book looks at innovation from a different perspective and asks, what has been left out? It offers a reflexive view and invites researchers to consider new avenues of research, through a critique of current representations of innovation.

Book excerpt: Launched in 2011 to recognize the prolific contribution that PhD dissertations make to the field of Innovation Management, the ISPIM Dissertation Award selects three winners from the possible 100+ entries every year. Aided in the selection process by the generous support of Innovation Leaders, the ISPIM presents the awards at their annual Innovation Conference. With only three finalists being selected each year, many excellent submissions do not receive the recognition they deserve. To rectify this, the 2018 ISPIM Dissertation Award cast its spotlight beyond the top three dissertations and onto a much greater number of entries. Compiling the top 28 submissions received this year, 'New Waves in Innovation Management Research' is organized into six thematic sections that cover areas such as investments, collaboration, and creativity. Presenting a broad range of case studies and data from across global, this edited volume illustrates the breadth of research potential in the coming wave of innovation management. This book will be of interest to students, researchers and professional managers, alike, who are interested in or actively involved in the latest research on innovation management.

To better grasp the opportunities hidden behind worldwide megatrends, such as the growing economic prosperity of Asian countries and the importance of the internet-based economy, the authors argue for a reinvention of Russia’s innovation strategy. Instead of a purely technology-driven approach, the authors illustrate how the principles of strategic innovation help develop institutional and non-technical innovation, as well as new forms of leadership and entrepreneurship within the Russian business culture. The authors also discuss the impact of strategic innovation on corporate strategies, innovation and economic policy, as well as academic research and development agendas. The book also sheds new light on how cooperation between Russia and the EU, the US and China in the area of innovation can be of mutual benefit.

Book excerpt: The process of innovating for emerging markets and subsequently taking back those innovations to developed markets is summarized by the term "reverse innovation" and presents the topic under investigation for this thesis. The research is conducted in a multiple-case study analysis and investigates on three Western firms that execute reverse innovation for Chinese and Indian markets. To come up with the respective case studies, several managers in different positions with an involvement in the reverse innovation project were interviewed. This study analyzes how reverse innovation is conducted in Western firms, identifies the main challenges that arise with the reverse transfer, and elaborates on challenges and resistances among the various units that participate in reverse innovation. Two out of three firms developed their reverse innovation mainly at headquarters with various degrees of involvement of the emerging market unit. Coming up with a reverse innovation allowed all three firms to build-up or further develop their subsidiaries in emerging markets. When transferring emerging market innovations back to developed markets, the respective timing, cannibalization issues, and the compliance with Western standards were among the most prevalent challenges. The most disconcerting issues for participating units were the shift of power and control towards emerging market units, the transfer of know-how, as well as the fear of cannibalization. Based on the results of the cases study analysis, several theoretical and managerial implications were identified to support researchers and practitioners who are interested in reverse innovation.
