Book Synopsis Wilderness Management and the Restoration of Fire by : David Ostergren
Download or read book Wilderness Management and the Restoration of Fire written by David Ostergren and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our recognition of the ecological importance of fire has increased to the point where the operative question is no longer Should we have fire on our public lands? but How should we restore fire as an essential ecosystem process?. This white paper places the restoration of fire in the context of the 1964 Wilderness Act, and then examines the implementation of federal fire law and policy in five Wilderness Areas (WAs) in northern Arizona dominated by ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) ecosystems. The analysis of these WAs reveals that while the three federal agencies involved in the study (Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, and National Park Service) share similar fire legislation and policies, implementation varies from agency to agency. Although initiated in northern Arizona, the implications of this study span wilderness ecosystems throughout the United States and suggest the need for a comprehensive national Wilderness fire policy.
Book Synopsis Issues in Evaluating the Costs and Benefits of Fuel Treatments to Reduce Wildfire in the Nation's Forests by : Jeffrey D. Kline
Download or read book Issues in Evaluating the Costs and Benefits of Fuel Treatments to Reduce Wildfire in the Nation's Forests written by Jeffrey D. Kline and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Years of fire suppression and increasing constraints on natural and prescribed burning, possibly along with climate change, have altered historical wildfire regimes resulting in increased wildfire severity in the Nation's forests. The growing wildfire threat has motivated increasing interest in reducing hazardous fuels through prescribed burning, thinning, and harvesting. There is debate about whether such fuel treatments are necessary owing to the complexity of the wildfire issue and to general disagreement about whether long-term wildfire impacts present a real problem. This report presents one way of conceptualizing the costs and benefits of fuel treatments and wildfire and reviews issues related to their evaluation. Illustrations. This is a print on demand report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated Disaster Science and Management: Global Case Studies in Mitigation and Recovery bridges the gap between scientific research on natural disasters and the practice of disaster management. It examines natural hazards, including earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis, and uses integrated disaster management techniques, quantitative methods and big data analytics to create early warning models to mitigate impacts of these hazards and reduce the risk of disaster. It also looks at mitigation as part of the recovery process after a disaster, as in the case of the Nepal earthquake. Edited by global experts in disaster management and engineering, the book offers case studies that focus on the critical phases of disaster management. - Identifies advanced techniques and models based on natural disaster science for forecasting disasters and analyzing risk - Offers a holistic approach to the problem of disaster management, including preparation, recovery, and resilience - Includes coverage of social, economic, and environmental impacts on disasters

Book Synopsis Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Southern Ecosystems by : Thomas A. Waldrop
Download or read book Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Southern Ecosystems written by Thomas A. Waldrop and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prescribed burning is an important tool throughout Southern forests, grasslands, and croplands. The need to control fire became evident to allow forests to regenerate. This manual is intended to help resource managers to plan and execute prescribed burns in Southern forests and grasslands. A new appreciation and interest has developed in recent years for using prescribed fire in grasslands, especially hardwood forests, and on steep mountain slopes. Proper planning and execution of prescribed fires are necessary to reduce detrimental effects, such as the impacts on air and downstream water quality.
