This book was released on 1985 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s, Colombia's economic performance slowed. During 1983-84, when this study was completed, Colombia's external accounts were facing significant difficulties. Faced with growing balance of payments problems, the government initiated an adjustment program that emphasizes export development and fiscal and monetary restraint. Some of the problems of the external sector during the first half of the 1980s could be attributed to a slowdown in the expansion of noncoffee production and exports combined with a downswing in coffee prospects. Equally important, however, were the unfavorable trends in the capital markets, which were responding to the economic and debt woes of Latin America. While international factors are crucial to an understanding of the evolving situation, this study is focused on domestic measures managed by policymakers. The book also establishes some of the requirements of medium-term performance and, emphasizing the need for sectoral revitalization, it reviews growth options in agriculture. The book is in four parts. First, it discusses trade-related macroeconomic policies, with special attention given to their connection with agriculture. This discussion includes: an overview of issues and the effects of macroeconomic policy on the agricultural sector; a review of export policy focused on management of export incentives; and import policy alternatives. Second, the study includes an assessment of price policies in agriculture, including price support and import restrictions; price stabilization issues; and policies regarding coffee production and pricing, and issues related to agricultural diversification. Third, the study examines nonpricing issues that influence the production environment in agriculture, including public and private sector investment in agriculture, and direct policies aimed at increasing agricultural productivity. Finally, the study draws out the main conclusions of the work.

Book excerpt: This report investigates the income and equity effects of macroeconomic policy reforms in Zimbabwe, emphasizing linkages between macroeconomic policies and agricultural performance and agriculture's influence on aggregate income and its distribution. Analyses focus on reform of the foreign trade regime, public expenditure, and tax policy, along with the potential benefits of combining these structural changes with various land reform scenarios. The study uses a CGE model that provides a policy simulation laboratory in which exogenous policy changes are analyzed for their economywide income and equity effects. The report highlights the need for policy complementarities in Zimbabwe that can contribute to equitable growth. It should be of interest not only to those concerned with recent economic developments in Zimbabwe but also to those concerned with the broader issues of macroeconomic reform and its ultimate effects.

Book Synopsis Growth and Evolution in China's Agricultural Support Policies by : Fred Gale
Download or read book Growth and Evolution in China's Agricultural Support Policies written by Fred Gale and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is perhaps the most prominent example of a developing country that has transitioned from taxing to supporting agriculture. In recent years, Chinese price supports and subsidies have risen at an accelerating pace after they were linked to rising production costs. Per-acre subsidy payments to grain producers now equal 7 to 15 percent of those producers' gross income, but grain payments appear to have little influence on production decisions. Chinese authorities began raising price supports annually to bolster incentives, and Chinese prices for major farm commodities are rising above world prices, helping to attract a surge of agricultural imports. U.S. agricultural exports to China tripled in value during the period when China's agricultural support was accelerating. Overall, China's expansion of support is loosely constrained by World Trade Organization (WTO) commitments, but the country's price-support programs could exceed WTO limits in coming years. Chinese officials promise to continue increasing domestic policy support for agriculture, but the mix of policies may evolve as the Chinese agricultural sector becomes more commercialized and faces competitive pressures.
Book Synopsis Redistribution, Inequality, and Growth by : Mr.Jonathan David Ostry
Download or read book Redistribution, Inequality, and Growth written by Mr.Jonathan David Ostry and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-02-17 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fund has recognized in recent years that one cannot separate issues of economic growth and stability on one hand and equality on the other. Indeed, there is a strong case for considering inequality and an inability to sustain economic growth as two sides of the same coin. Central to the Fund’s mandate is providing advice that will enable members’ economies to grow on a sustained basis. But the Fund has rightly been cautious about recommending the use of redistributive policies given that such policies may themselves undercut economic efficiency and the prospects for sustained growth (the so-called “leaky bucket” hypothesis written about by the famous Yale economist Arthur Okun in the 1970s). This SDN follows up the previous SDN on inequality and growth by focusing on the role of redistribution. It finds that, from the perspective of the best available macroeconomic data, there is not a lot of evidence that redistribution has in fact undercut economic growth (except in extreme cases). One should be careful not to assume therefore—as Okun and others have—that there is a big tradeoff between redistribution and growth. The best available macroeconomic data do not support such a conclusion.

Book Synopsis The Economic History of Latin America since Independence by : Victor Bulmer-Thomas
Download or read book The Economic History of Latin America since Independence written by Victor Bulmer-Thomas and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-10 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, now in a revised and updated third edition, covers the economic history of Latin America from independence in the 1820s to the present. It stresses the differences between Latin American countries while recognizing the external influences to which the whole region has been subject. Victor Bulmer-Thomas notes the failure of the region to close the gap in living standards between it and the United States and explores the reasons. He also examines the new paradigm taking shape in Latin America since the debt crisis of the 1980s and asks whether this new economic model will be able to bring the growth and improvement in equity that the region desperately needs. This third edition contains a wealth of new material that draws on the new research in the area in the past ten years.
