In every cycle of time the master editor called Veda vyas emerges to edit, vet and compile these records. Their significance is enormous even in the present, as they give a peep into the distant past of Hindus when the world was evolving and the psyche of the race was being formed. These Puranas record the arguments that make us to decide as to what is holy and what is vile; what is good and what is had. By going through them we can compare our present day jurisprudence vis-a-vis the ancient norms. Apart from that, they are a huge store-house of information conceiving every subject under the sun. It is with the view of unearthing these gems that the present series of the puranas has been planned.
Download or read book Shiva written by Vanamali and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-10-04 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional understanding of Shiva told through stories and teachings from the Shiva Mahapurana • Explains Shiva’s contradictory forms, such as destroyer or benefactor, and how his form depends on the needs of the devotee • Reveals how Shiva’s teachings allow one to see through the illusions at the root of all grief and alienation in human life • Explores Shiva’s relationships with Durga, Shakti, Sati, and Parvati and with his sons Ganesha and Kartikeya Shiva, the most ancient and complex deity of the Hindu pantheon, has been portrayed in many contrasting lights: destroyer and benefactor, ascetic and householder, wild demon slayer and calm yogi atop Mount Kailash. Drawing from the Hindu sacred text the Shiva Mahapurana--said to be written by Shiva himself--Vanamali selects the essential stories of Shiva, both those from his dark wild side and those from his benevolent peaceful side. Vanamali discusses Shiva’s many avatars such as Shambunatha and Bhola, as well as Dakshinamurti who taught the shastras and tantras to the rishis. She explores Shiva’s relationships with Durga, Shakti, Sati, and Parvati and with his sons Ganesha and Kartikeya. Examining Shiva’s acceptance of outsiders, Vanamali explains why ghosts and ghouls are his attendants and why his greatest devotees are demon kings, like Ravana. She includes famous Shiva stories such as the Descent of the River Ganga and Churning the Milky Ocean as well as those that reveal the origin of the festival of lights, Diwali; his creation of the cosmic couple, or hierogamos; and how Shiva and Parvati taught the world the secrets of Kundalini Shakti. The author also draws upon Shaivite teachings to illustrate the differences between Western science and Vedic science and their explanations for the origins of consciousness. Integrating Shiva’s two sides, the fierce and the peaceful, Vanamali reveals that Shiva’s form depends on the needs of the devotee. Understanding his teachings allows one to see through the illusions at the root of all grief and alienation in human life, for Shiva is the wielder of maya who does not fall under its spell. While Ganesha is known as the remover of obstacles, Shiva is the remover of tears.

Download or read book Vishnu Purana written by B. K. Chaturvedi and published by Diamond Pocket Books (P) Ltd.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vishnu Puran is believed to be one of the most important Puranas, if not the most valuable ancient record of the faith called Sanatan Dharma. Its stories reveal about the various exploits of Vishnu incarnations. In rendering this holy text into English, the attention has been paid to put only those details that have certain fundamental truths of life. Hence, in this work those details have been deliberately omitted which may appear rather confusing or uninteresting to the reader not having the initiation in the sacred love. The main thrust of this attempt has been to show a clear glimpse of our ancient hermitage.
Book Synopsis Fifty stories from Yogavasistha by : Vijayshree
Download or read book Fifty stories from Yogavasistha written by Vijayshree and published by Nag Prakashak. This book was released on 2006-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telling stories is the most effective and the easiest way to teach and preach ethics and morality, philosophy or human psychology, social ideals and religion, politics and social human behavior, emotions of love, hate, anger, and heroism to any age group of the species of mankind. We find many Akhyanas (stories) in the oldest available scriptures i.e. the oldest available scriptures i.e. the tenth Mandala of the Rigveda. The same is developed later on in Brahman literature, Upanishads, Puranas, Epics, and classical literature. The famous 'Panchtantra' is known to be written by Vishnu Sharma to teach politics to the three princes of King Amarshkti. Similarly, the author of Yogavasishtha has also, employed this technique of storytelling in expounding subtle ideals of Indian philosophy through Akhyanas in the book. Yogavasishtha like Srimad Bhagvadgita is the most appropriate, even in the present times of information technology for the most ordinary human being, anywhere in the world. It gives us 'Peace' the most sought-after thing in the present world. This book does not believe in renouncing the world or duties, unlike the Upanishads. Here the author has utilized 'Fifty-five' Akhyanas (Stories) to simplify the difficult ideals of Indian Philosophy. A few of them are repetitions, so to avoid repetition I have compiled them into fifty stories.

Download or read book Echoes of Ancient Indian Wisdom written by Shantha N. Nair and published by Pustak Mahal. This book was released on 2008 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The echoes of ancient Indian wisdom can be heard from the oldest of scriptures that existed many years ago. Even thousands of years before they were written down on palm leaves, the teachings were passed on from generations to generations, from the teachers to the disciples in their oral form. These works are amongst the oldest of humanity. They laid the foundation of one of the most tolerant and diverse religions in the world, the Sanatan Dharma or Hinduism, which is marked by a wide range of ethos and philosophical approaches. Covering the vastness and immensity of the ancient Indian scriptures is akin to capturing a gigantic ocean in a small pitcher. Thus, in this book, the author has tried to catch a few 'echoes' resonating with age-old wisdom and has presented them to the readers. the book unravels the knowledge hidden inside the Samhitas, Brahmanas, Aranyakas and Upanishads of the Shruti that form the Vedas, and in the Smriti like Agamas, Dharma Shastras and so on. In short, it provides a glimpse, or rather a macro view of the ancient treasure of India.
