This suggests that a wake pressure Pw be associated with each flow past a bluff body, and that a wake parameter (2. 4) which plays the same role as the cavitation parameter (2. 1), be defined for the flow. This idea has been made the basis of a modified wake theory (ef. Sect. 11) which proves to be in good qu- titative agreement with pressure and drag measurements. It should be emphasized, however, that un h like the cavitation number, the wake parameter is a quantity which is not known a priori, and must be empirically determined in each case. (3) Jet flows. The problem of jet efflux from an orifice is one of the oldest in hydrodynamics and the first to be treated by Fig. 3a. the HELMHOLTZ free streamline theory. Of particular importance for engineering applications is the discharge coefficient Cd' which is defined in terms of the discharge Q per unit time, the pressure P, and the cross-sectional area A of the orifice, by the formula, (2. 5) where e is the fluid density. Two methods of measuring Cd have been most fre quently adopted. In the first the liquid issues from an orifice in a large vessel under the influence of gravity _,-____________ . , (Fig. 3 a), while in the second it 1 L is forced out of a nozzle or pipe under high pressure (Fig. 3 b).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French thinkers like Roland Barthes, Pierre Bourdieu, A. J. Greimas, Michel Foucault, and Claude Levi-Strauss created the "structuralist" and "poststructuralist" movements. They succeeded Sartrian existentialism and formed a new aristocracy of culture. French Intellectual Nobility is the first study to examine the conditions for the creation of these movements. Through case studies in cultural history, sociology, semiology, and literature, the book discusses the processes that enabled the French intellectual nobility to reinvent itself. By developing a historical and comparative approach, Kauppi analyzes the challenges that an intellectual generation faced, and he contributes to a context-sensitive analysis of culture and power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author is an experienced systems and organisational analyst who examined ancient sources with present-day analytical methods to retrieve our ancestors' sciences. This uncovered a general quantum theory offering answers to current questions such as, • Why do galaxies form spiral arms? • Why is the universe expanding at an accelerating rate? • What can travel through a black hole? • What does dark matter do? • Where does dark energy come from? • What does String Theory describe? • Why is it impossible to detect gravitons? • Which other boson types exist, what do they do, and when is the best time to spot them? This systematic analysis builds on the findings of experts from diverse scientific domains. It examines a selection of ancient traditions and texts in the context of more than 200 artefacts dating from before the Neolithic to pre-Renaissance times. It contains eighteen studies in philosophy, theology, and intellectual history, which demonstrate the historical development of this notion and its evolving meaning: from the Hebrew Bible and the classical midrashic collections, through Kabbalah, Isaac Luria himself and his disciples, up to modernity (ranging from Spinoza, Böhme, Leibniz, Newton, Schelling, and Hegel to Scholem, Rosenzweig, Heidegger, Benjamin, Adorno, Horkheimer, Levinas, Jonas, Moltmann, and Derrida).

Book excerpt: This volume contains articles written by the invited speakers and workshop participants from the conference on "Crystallographic Groups and Their Generalizations", held at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Kortrijk (Belgium). Presented are recent developments and open problems. Topics include the theory of affine structures and polynomial structures, affine Schottky groups and crooked tilings, theory and problems on the geometry of finitely generated solvable groups, flat Lorentz 3-manifolds and Fuchsian groups, filiform Lie algebras, hyperbolic automorphisms and Anosov diffeomorphisms on infra-nilmanifolds, localization theory of virtually nilpotent groups and aspherical spaces, projective varieties, and results on affine appartment systems. Participants delivered high-level research mathematics and a discussion was held forum for new researchers. The survey results and original papers contained in this volume offer a comprehensive view of current developments in the field.

Several views that later became well-known in his The Principles of Mathematics actually originate in his earlier work, and though incomplete,An Analysis of Mathematical Reasoning, forms a centrepiece of the volume.

The papers in this volume clearly demonstrate the wealth of Pinborg's scholarly interests and the extent of his influence.Though centered on medieval theories of grammar and language, the collection ranges in time from the fourth century B.C. to the seventeenth century A.D.; theories of the pronoun, of mental language, of supposition, of figurative expressions and of mereology are among the topics discussed; and the papers deal with both humble anonymous teachers of grammar and with such well-known men as Aristotle, Plotinus, Augustine, Peter of Spain, Roger Bacon, Robert Kilwardby, Thomas Aquinas, Dante, William of Ockham, Domingo de Soto, and Suárez. The papers are in English, German, or French.

Book excerpt: A bilingual collection of essays on the aesthetics of Gilles Deleuze, Discern(e)ments highlights what is at stake in Deleuzian philosophy of art. It traces the reception of Deleuzian thought in a broad range of disciplines and gauges its use-value in each of them. Following the dynamics between structure and becoming that punctuates Deleuzian aesthetics, Discern(e)ments sketches and erases boundaries between methods and traditions in philosophy and art theory, as well as in literary, performance and film studies. Offering both numerous case-studies as well as theoretical outlines, Discern(e)ments engages faculties, disciplines and criticisms not in a mere exchange of points of view, but in heterogenesis mapping out further discernments in Deleuzian aesthetics.
