Book excerpt: This volume presents a unique combination of modeling and solving real world optimization problems. It is the only book which treats systematically the major modeling languages and systems used to solve mathematical optimization problems, and it also provides a useful overview and orientation of today's modeling languages in mathematical optimization. It demonstrates the strengths and characteristic features of such languages and provides a bridge for researchers, practitioners and students into a new world: solving real optimization problems with the most advances modeling systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills a gap in the linear programming literature, by explaining the steps that are illustrated but not always fully explained in every elementary operations book - the steps that lead from the elementary and intuitive graphical method of solution to the more advanced simplex tableau method. Most of the world, even those technically trained, can get along very well by seeing a few illustrations of simple linear programming problems solved graphically, followed by instruction in the use of computer software for solving real-world problems. But there needs to be a coterie of initiates who understand the process well enough to explain it to others, to know what the pitfalls, ramifications and special cases are, and to provide further developments. I have used an informal narrative style with a number of worked out examples and detailed explanations, to put the topic within reach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many engineering, operations, and scientific applications include a mixture of discrete and continuous decision variables and nonlinear relationships involving the decision variables that have a pronounced effect on the set of feasible and optimal solutions. Mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems combine the numerical difficulties of handling nonlinear functions with the challenge of optimizing in the context of nonconvex functions and discrete variables. MINLP is one of the most flexible modeling paradigms available for optimization; but because its scope is so broad, in the most general cases it is hopelessly intractable. Nonetheless, an expanding body of researchers and practitioners — including chemical engineers, operations researchers, industrial engineers, mechanical engineers, economists, statisticians, computer scientists, operations managers, and mathematical programmers — are interested in solving large-scale MINLP instances.

This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1940s, linear programming models have been used for many different purposes. Airline companies apply these models to optimize their use of planes and staff. NASA has been using them for many years to optimize their use of limited resources. Oil companies use them to optimize their refinery operations. Small and medium-sized businesses use linear programming to solve a huge variety of problems, often involving resource allocation. In my study, a typical product-mix problem in a manufacturing system producing two products (each product consists of two sub-assemblies) is solved for its optimal solution through the use of the latest versions of MATLAB having the command simlp, which is very much like linprog. As analysts, we try to find a good enough solution for the decision maker to make a final decision. Our attempt is to give the mathematical description of the product-mix optimization problem and bring the problem into a form ready to call MATLAB’s simlp command. The objective of this study is to find the best product mix that maximizes profit. The graph obtained using MATLAB commands, give the shaded area enclosed by the constraints called the feasible region, which is the set of points satisfying all the constraints. To find the optimal solution we look at the lines of equal profit to find the corner of the feasible region which yield the highest profit. This corner can be found out at the farthest line of equal profit, which still touches the feasible region. The most critical part is the sensitivity analysis, using Excel Solver, and Parametric Analysis, using computer software, which allows us to study the effect on optimal solution due to discrete and continuous change in parameters of the LP model including to identify bottlenecks. We have examined other options like product outsourcing, one-time cost, cross training of one operator, manufacturing of hypothetical third product on under-utilized machines and optimal sequencing of jobs on machines.

This book, however, contains descriptions of new implementations of general-purpose or problem-specific global optimization algorithms. It discusses existing software packages from which the entire community can learn. The contributors are experts in the discipline of actually getting global optimization to work, and the book provides a source of ideas for people needing to implement global optimization software.

Its results are used in every area of engineering and commerce: agriculture, oil refining, banking, and air transport. Authors Kolman and Beck present the basic notions of linear programming and illustrate how they are used to solve important common problems. The software on the included disk leads students step-by-step through the calculations. The Second Edition is completely revised and provides additional review material on linear algebra as well as complete coverage of elementary linear programming. Other topics covered include: the Duality Theorem; transportation problems; the assignment problem; and the maximal flow problem. New figures and exercises are provided and the authors have updated all computer applications. - More review material on linear algebra - Elementary linear programming covered more efficiently - Presentation improved, especially for the duality theorem, transportation problems, the assignment problem, and the maximal flow problem - New figures and exercises - Computer applications updated - New guide to inexpensive linear programming software for personal computers

Book excerpt: Developments in optimization theory, including emphasis on large problems and on interior-point methods for linear programming, have begun to appear in production software. Here is a reference tool that includes discussions of these areas and names software packages that incorporate the results of theoretical research. After an introduction to the major problem areas in optimization and an outline of the algorithms used to solve them, a data sheet is presented for each of the 75 software packages and libraries in the authors' survey. These include information on the capabilities of the packages, how to obtain them, and addresses for further information. Standard optimization paradigms are addressed -- linear, quadratic, and nonlinear programming; network optimization; unconstrained and bound-constrained optimization; least-squares problems; nonlinear equations; and integer programming. The most practical algorithms for the major fields of numerical optimization are outlined, and the software packages in which they are implemented are described. This format will aid current and potential users of optimization software in classifying the optimization problem to be solved, determining appropriate algorithms, and obtaining the software that implements those algorithms. Readers need only a basic knowledge of vector calculus and linear algebra to understand this book.
