Linear planning, commonly discussed in the past as a method which plans the development of the city, is completely redefined here in the form of a design approach inspired by projects shaped by linear routes, such as cycle or walking paths. Such concept is applied to the urgent topic of territorial marginality which specifically neglects rural and mountainous areas and recently is coped by European and National policies. The analysis of these policies demonstrates the necessity of alternative strategies equipped to deal with both the internal and external causes that determine the critical conditions in these fragile environments. By implementing the concept of linear planning in these contexts, this book proposes to enlarge the perspective of traditional policies contrasting the regional inequalities that usually determine the design of projects just within the boundaries of the marginal areas. Cycle and walking paths are experimental cases of linear planning as they have not been influenced or formed by political boundaries and therefore are able to equally involve both the central and marginal zones. This book presents a review of current issues such as regional inequalities, with attention to their related policies, as well as an analysis of the concept of linear planning as seen through the study of one of the most famous cases of a walking path—the Way of St. James in Spain.

Al though a number of books in MCDM fields have already been published in recent years, most of them have mainly trea ted one aspect of MCDM. The first paper, by Sherine Al-Shawarby, reviews the studies on inequality in Egypt since the 1950s with the double objective of illustrating the importance attributed to inequality through time and of presenting and compare the main published statistics on inequality. The second paper, by Branko Milanovic, turns to the global and spatial dimensions of inequality. The Egyptian society remains deeply divided across space and in terms of welfare, and this study unveils some of the hidden features of this inequality. The third paper, by Paolo Verme, studies facts and perceptions of inequality during the 2000-2009 period, which preceded the Egyptian revolution. The fourth paper, by Sahar El Tawila, May Gadallah, and Enas Ali A.El-Majeed, assesses the state of poverty and inequality among the poorest villages of Egypt. The paper attempts to explain the level of inequality in an effort to disentangle those factors that derive from household abilities from those factors that derive from local opportunities. Inside Inequality in the Arab Republic of Egypt provides some initial elements that could explain the apparent mismatch between inequality measured with household surveys and inequality aversion measured by values surveys. This is a particularly important and timely topic to address in light of the unfolding developments in the Arab region. The book should be of interest to any observer of the political and economic evolution of the Arab region in the past few years and to poverty and inequality specialists interested in a deeper understanding of the distribution of incomes in Egypt and other countries in the Middle East and North Africa region. Book excerpt: Based on eight monographs presented and discussed at a working meeting of the International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP) in 1977, this summational report is intended to be used by educational planners for a reduction of regional disparities through school network reorganization and improvements in educational service. Part I discusses the regional approach to the problem of educational disparities with reference to countries such as Thailand and Kenya, identifying both interregional and intraregional disparities. Part II establishes criteria for measuring disparities, beginning with such commonly used indicators as quantitative expansion of the education system and efficiency of educational service, and demonstrating three different types of evaluative analysis: evolution of disparities in time; evolution of disparities at different levels of the education system; and the relation between educational, economic, and social disparities. Part II also includes a proposed classification of educational indicators for analytical purposes. While part III focuses on disparities in educational access, school progress, and scholastic achievement, part IV reviews measures currently envisaged by governments for reducing regional disparities and discusses their implications for educational planning.
