Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey of 13 electrooptic materials includes both a review and compilation of all materials properties relevant to their use in linear (Pockels) electrooptic modulator applications. Information on actual electrooptic modulator design as well as applications for these materials, and data on materials exhibiting a quadratic (Kerr) electrooptic effect, are not included. With these restrictions in mind, every attempt was made to be as comprehensive as possible by utilizing all available sources of literature: books, periodicals, reports, and vendor literature. The files of the Electronic Properties Information Center and full resources of the Hughes Aircraft Company Library were searched for pertinent data, and approximately 1000 articles were reviewed for this pUblication. A brief Introduction to the survey is followed by a description of the Prin ciples of Electrooptic Modulation, emphasizing the importance of crystal symmetry on the electrooptic properties of materials, and including the relationships between the electrooptic, piezooptic, elastooptic and piezoelectric effects in crystals. The survey consists of 13 independent sections, each section covering the properties of one material: crystallographic, optical, electrooptic, photoelastic, piezoelectric, dielectric and thermal. References appearing in the text are listed at the conclusion of each section. Tables and Figures are numbered separately for each section. v TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION . • . . . . . 1 PRINCIPLES OF ELECTROOPTIC MODULATION. 5 AMMONIUM DIHYDROGEN ARSENATE (ADA) . 15 AMMONIUM DIHYDROGEN PHOSPHATE (ADP).

Book Synopsis Semiconductor Optical Modulators by : Koichi Wakita
Download or read book Semiconductor Optical Modulators written by Koichi Wakita and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of GaAs/ AIGaAs double heterostructure lasers has opened the door to a new age in the application of compound semiconductor materials to microwave and optical technologies. A variety and combination of semiconductor materials have been investigated and applied to present commercial uses with these devices operating at wide frequencies and wavelengths. Semiconductor modulators are typical examples of this technical evolutions and hsve been developed for commercial use. Although these have a long history to date, we are not aware of any book that details this evolution. Consequently, we have written a book to provide a comprehensive account of semiconductor modulators with emphasis on historical details and experimantal reports. The objective is to provide an up-to-date understanding of semiconductor modulators. Particular attention has been paid to multiple quantum well (MQW) modulators operating at long wavelengths, taking into account the low losses and dispersion in silica fibers occuring at around 1.3 and 1.55 mm. At the present time, MQW structures have been investigated but these have not been sufficiently developed to provide characteristic features which would be instructive enough for readers. One problem is the almost daily publication of papers on semiconductor modulators. Not only do these papers provide additional data, but they often modify the interpretations of particular concepts. Almost all chapters refer to the large number of published papers that can be consulted for future study.

Book Synopsis Large-Aperture Optical Modulator Materials. Lead Lanthanum Zirconate Titanate Ceramic and Lithium Niobate Crystal Show Promise as Modulator Materials for Optical Transmitters with Up to 6-inch Apertures by :
Download or read book Large-Aperture Optical Modulator Materials. Lead Lanthanum Zirconate Titanate Ceramic and Lithium Niobate Crystal Show Promise as Modulator Materials for Optical Transmitters with Up to 6-inch Apertures written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six categories of active optical materials were found to qualify as potential large-aperture optical modulator material candidates. Two of these, the electro-optical linear Pockels lithium niobate crystals and the ferroelectric ceramic lead lanthanum zirconate titanate wafers showed real promise. Both of these satisfy the requirements of field of view, optical quality, frequency response, and economic availability, and both performed above expectations when tested in an actual optical communications test link. Interdigital lithium niobate electrodes buried on both large optical surfaces of the crystal may further reduce half-wave voltage requirements as well as arcing problems encountered in past experiments. The structural integrity of the ceramic wafer could be increased by developing a bonded version. Optical modulators of increased are structure of smaller elements.
