Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrating the relevance of linear approximation in a variety of fields, Numerical Linear Approximation in C presents a unique collection of linear approximation algorithms that can be used to analyze, model, and compress discrete data. Developed by the lead author, the algorithms have been successfully applied to several engineering projects at the National Research Council of Canada. Basing most of the algorithms on linear programming techniques, the book begins with an introductory section that covers applications, the simplex method, and matrices. The next three parts focus on various L1, Chebyshev, and least squares approximations, including one-sided, bounded variables, and piecewise. The final section presents the solution of underdetermined systems of consistent linear equations that are subject to different constraints on the elements of the unknown solution vector. Except in the preliminary section, all chapters include the C functions of the algorithms, along with drivers that contain numerous test case examples and results. The accompanying CD-ROM also provides the algorithms written in C code as well as the test drivers. To use the software, it is not required to understand the theory behind each function.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Active Calculus - single variable is a free, open-source calculus text that is designed to support an active learning approach in the standard first two semesters of calculus, including approximately 200 activities and 500 exercises. In the HTML version, more than 250 of the exercises are available as interactive WeBWorK exercises; students will love that the online version even looks great on a smart phone. Each section of Active Calculus has at least 4 in-class activities to engage students in active learning. Normally, each section has a brief introduction together with a preview activity, followed by a mix of exposition and several more activities. Each section concludes with a short summary and exercises; the non-WeBWorK exercises are typically involved and challenging. More information on the goals and structure of the text can be found in the preface.

Apart from a number of minor additions and corrections and a few new proofs (e. g. , the new proof of JACKSON'S Theorem), it differs in detail from the first edition by the inclusion of a discussion of new work on comparison theorems in the case of so-called regular Haar systems (§ 6) and on Segment Approximation (§ 11). I want to thank the many readers who provided comments and helpful suggestions. My special thanks are due to the translator, to Springer-Verlag for their ready compliance with all my wishes, to Mr.

Book excerpt: This largely self-contained book provides a unified framework of semi-Lagrangian strategy for the approximation of hyperbolic PDEs, with a special focus on Hamilton-Jacobi equations. The authors provide a rigorous discussion of the theory of viscosity solutions and the concepts underlying the construction and analysis of difference schemes; they then proceed to high-order semi-Lagrangian schemes and their applications to problems in fluid dynamics, front propagation, optimal control, and image processing. The developments covered in the text and the references come from a wide range of literature.

Book excerpt: The theory of transcendental numbers is closely related to the study of diophantine approximation. This book deals with values of the usual exponential function ez: a central open problem is the conjecture on algebraic independence of logarithms of algebraic numbers. Two chapters provide complete and simplified proofs of zero estimates (due to Philippon) on linear algebraic groups.

These are a more convenient tool than polynomials, and interest in them was growing, especially after D. Newman's work in the mid-sixties. The authors present the basic achievements of the subject and also discuss some topics from complex rational approximation.

Book excerpt: Basic Real Analysis demonstrates the richness of real analysis, giving students an introduction both to mathematical rigor and to the deep theorems and counter examples that arise from such rigor. In this modern and systematic text, all the touchstone results and fundamentals are carefully presented in a style that requires little prior familiarity with proofs or mathematical language. With its many examples, exercises and broad view of analysis, this work is ideal for senior undergraduates and beginning graduate students, either in the classroom or for self-study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first investigations of nonlinear approximation problems were made by P.L. Chebyshev in the last century, and the entire theory of uniform approxima tion is strongly connected with his name. By making use of his ideas, the theories of best uniform approximation by rational functions and by polynomials were developed over the years in an almost unified framework. The difference between linear and rational approximation and its implications first became apparent in the 1960's. At roughly the same time other approaches to nonlinear approximation were also developed. The use of new tools, such as nonlinear functional analysis and topological methods, showed that linearization is not sufficient for a complete treatment of nonlinear families. In particular, the application of global analysis and the consideration of flows on the family of approximating functions intro duced ideas which were previously unknown in approximation theory. These were and still are important in many branches of analysis. On the other hand, methods developed for nonlinear approximation prob lems can often be successfully applied to problems which belong to or arise from linear approximation. An important example is the solution of moment problems via rational approximation. Best quadrature formulae or the search for best linear spaces often leads to the consideration of spline functions with free nodes. The most famous problem of this kind, namely best interpolation by poly nomials, is treated in the appendix of this book.

Over the last 20 years a theory of geometric approximation algorithms has emerged. These algorithms tend to be simple, fast, and more robust than their exact counterparts. This book is the first to cover geometric approximation algorithms in detail. In addition, more traditional computational geometry techniques that are widely used in developing such algorithms, like sampling, linear programming, etc., are also surveyed. Other topics covered include approximate nearest-neighbor search, shape approximation, coresets, dimension reduction, and embeddings. The topics covered are relatively independent and are supplemented by exercises. Close to 200 color figures are included in the text to illustrate proofs and ideas.

Book excerpt: This book takes readers on a multi-perspective tour through state-of-the-art mathematical developments related to the numerical treatment of PDEs based on splines, and in particular isogeometric methods. A wide variety of research topics are covered, ranging from approximation theory to structured numerical linear algebra. More precisely, the book provides (i) a self-contained introduction to B-splines, with special focus on approximation and hierarchical refinement, (ii) a broad survey of numerical schemes for control problems based on B-splines and B-spline-type wavelets, (iii) an exhaustive description of methods for computing and analyzing the spectral distribution of discretization matrices, and (iv) a detailed overview of the mathematical and implementational aspects of isogeometric analysis. The text is the outcome of a C.I.M.E. summer school held in Cetraro (Italy), July 2017, featuring four prominent lecturers with different theoretical and application perspectives. The book may serve both as a reference and an entry point into further research.
