Book Synopsis Religion and Rajput Women by : Lindsey Harlan
Download or read book Religion and Rajput Women written by Lindsey Harlan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-06-21 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between caste and gender in the narratives of Rajput woman? During a year and a half of fieldwork in Rajasthan, a parched land dominated by the great Indian Desert, Lindsey Harlan interviewed more than a hundred women from all levels of Rajput society. She wanted to understand why certain religious practices were so important to Rajput women, and how they justified these to themselves. During the course of her interviews, the women described their religious practices—chief among them the worship of the family kuldevi (the goddess who exemplifies the ideal wife by staving off sickness, poverty, and infertility) and the veneration of satimatas (women who have immolated themselves on their husband's funeral pyre). As the women discussed these rituals, many of them also told Harlan religious myths and stories, drawing parallels between their behavior and that of various Indian heroines. These narratives and the role they play in the women's self-perception are the fascinating and enlightening subject of this book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telling an American Horror Story collects essays from new and established critics looking at the many ways the horror anthology series intersects with and comments on contemporary American social, political and popular culture. Divided into three sections, the chapters apply a cultural criticism framework to examine how the first eight seasons of AHS engage with American history, our contemporary ideologies and social policies. Part I explores the historical context and the uniquely-American folklore that AHS evokes, from the Southern Gothic themes of Coven to connections between Apocalypseand anxieties of modern American youth. Part II contains interpretations of place and setting that mark the various seasons of the anthology. Finally, Part III examines how the series confronts notions of individual and social identity, like the portrayals of destructive leadership in Cult and lesbian representation in Asylum and Hotel.
Book Synopsis Lessons in Mythology by : Edmund P. Cueva
Download or read book Lessons in Mythology written by Edmund P. Cueva and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers eight approaches to myth, its uses and purposes, from viewing personal narrative as a form of healing myth to observing the atrocities committed daily arising from the most destructive form of myth. The authors of the eight chapters here note that myths have existed from the beginning of the human race in a myriad of forms and serving a myriad of functions. Indeed, the shared observation of these scholars is that humans have always been storytellers and always will be because myths are a part of the lives of every single person; they are the story of us.
