Book Synopsis Lincoln of Kentucky by : Lowell Harrison
Download or read book Lincoln of Kentucky written by Lowell Harrison and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Young Abraham Lincoln and his family joined the migration over the Ohio River, but it was Kentucky--the state of his birth--that shaped his personality and continued to affect his life. His wife was from the commonwealth, as were each of the other women with whom he had romantic relationships. Henry Clay was his political idol; Joshua Speed of Farmington, near Louisville, was his lifelong best friend; and all three of his law partners were Kentuckians. During the Civil War, Lincoln is reputed to have said, ""I hope to have God on my side, but I must have Kentucky."" He recognized Kentucky's importance as the bellwether of the four loyal slave states and accepted the commonwealth's illegal neutrality until Unionists secured firm control of the state government. Lowell Harrison emphasizes the particular skill and delicacy with which Lincoln handled the problems of a loyal slave state populated by a large number of Confederate sympathizers. It was not until decades later that Kentuckians fully recognized Lincoln's greatness and paid homage to their native son.
Book Synopsis Early Kentucky Householders, 1787-1811 by :
Download or read book Early Kentucky Householders, 1787-1811 written by and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a consolidated list of approximately 34,000 names that appeared in the annual tax lists for Lincoln County, Kentucky, between 1787 and 1811. Forty-six of the fifty-four Kentucky counties that existed in the year 1811 are mentioned in the descriptions of landholdings claimed by Lincoln County householders during this period; in fact, nearly half of the counties were created out of the original Lincoln County boundaries. Thus a Lincoln County tax list can essentially be viewed as a statewide tax list. This is an important consideration because a tax list of this magnitude can actually stand as a substitute for the missing 1790 and 1800 Kentucky censuses. Mr. Sutherland's "householders" are heads of household who do not necessarily own the land on which they and their families lived. Taxpayers (i.e., householders) recorded in the annual tax lists between 1787 and 1811 are listed here in alphabetical order along with the date of the tax list, the number of the tax book and the page number of the original entry, and an enumeration of all other persons living in the household. As an aid to research the compiler has drawn up a complete "Surname Directory," which groups the phonetic variations of each name under a common spelling so that the researcher has only to search for the "common" spelling rather than the variants. This is a superb research tool

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kentucky Encyclopedia's 2,000-plus entries are the work of more than five hundred writers. Their subjects reflect all areas of the commonwealth and span the time from prehistoric settlement to today's headlines, recording Kentuckians' achievements in art, architecture, business, education, politics, religion, science, and sports. Biographical sketches portray all of Kentucky's governors and U.S. senators, as well as note congressmen and state and local politicians. Kentucky's impact on the national scene is registered in the lives of such figures as Carry Nation, Henry Clay, Louis Brandeis, and Alben Barkley. The commonwealth's high range from writers Harriette Arnow and Jesse Stuart, reformers Laura Clay and Mary Breckinridge, and civil rights leaders Whitney Young, Jr., and Georgia Powers, to sports figures Muhammad Ali and Adolph Rupp and entertainers Loretta Lynn, Merle Travis, and the Everly Brothers. Entries describe each county and county seat and each community with a population above 2,500. Broad overview articles examine such topics as agriculture, segregation, transportation, literature, and folklife. Frequently misunderstood aspects of Kentucky's history and culture are clarified and popular misconceptions corrected. The facts on such subjects as mint juleps, Fort Knox, Boone's coonskin cap, the Kentucky hot brown, and Morgan's Raiders will settle many an argument. For both the researcher and the more casual reader, this collection of facts and fancies about Kentucky and Kentuckians will be an invaluable resource.
Book Synopsis Life and Times of Judge Caleb Wallace by : William Heth Whitsitt
Download or read book Life and Times of Judge Caleb Wallace written by William Heth Whitsitt and published by . This book was released on 1888 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judge Caleb Wallace was descended from the clan which bears the name of Wallace in the Highlands of Scotland. In the present state of research, however, no effort will be made to trace his lineage beyond the Scottish emigrant who established this particular branch of the family in America. The name of that Scottish emigrant was Peter Wallace; in the records of the family he is spoken of as a Highland Scotchman; but it is likely that on his way to America he passed a season of greater or less length in the North of Ireland. His wife was a Scottish lady, Elizabeth Woods by her maiden name, to whom he may have been united during his sojourn in Ireland.-pg. 1.
