Book Synopsis Economic Liberalisation and Development in Africa by : Jomo Kwame Sundaram
Download or read book Economic Liberalisation and Development in Africa written by Jomo Kwame Sundaram and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this endnote address delivered at the 11th General Assembly of CODESRIA, held in Maputo in 2005, Sundaram notes that over three decades of economic stagnation, contraction and increased poverty have taken a huge toll on Africa's economic, social and political fabric; and pro-active efforts are urgently required in order to build new capacities and capabilities for development. He argues that much of the ostensible conventional wisdom regarding African development and poverty is often both erroneous and harmful; and calls for greater 'policy space' for African governments to choose or design their own development strategies, as well as implement more appropriate development policies. (This dual language edition is in both English and French).

Book Synopsis Too Much Finance? by : Mr.Jean-Louis Arcand
Download or read book Too Much Finance? written by Mr.Jean-Louis Arcand and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines whether there is a threshold above which financial development no longer has a positive effect on economic growth. We use different empirical approaches to show that there can indeed be "too much" finance. In particular, our results suggest that finance starts having a negative effect on output growth when credit to the private sector reaches 100% of GDP. We show that our results are consistent with the "vanishing effect" of financial development and that they are not driven by output volatility, banking crises, low institutional quality, or by differences in bank regulation and supervision.

Book Synopsis The Impact of Structural Reforms on Growth in Latin America and the Caribbean by : Hubert Escaith
Download or read book The Impact of Structural Reforms on Growth in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Hubert Escaith and published by Naciones Unidas, CEPAL. This book was released on 2000 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents an evaluation of the impact of trade and capital account liberalisation in 17 countries during the period 1970-1996. It shows that growth was responsive to investment in both physical and human capital and there was a link between education and capital formation. However in aggregate the reforms did not have a significant direct impact on the growth rate because individual components of reform had offsetting effects. In addition the speed of reform was important, the faster the pace the slower the growth. It seems that the impact of macroeconomic or investment variables was more homogeneous than structural reform..s.

Book Synopsis Inflation and Activity – Two Explorations and their Monetary Policy Implications by : Mr.Olivier J. Blanchard
Download or read book Inflation and Activity – Two Explorations and their Monetary Policy Implications written by Mr.Olivier J. Blanchard and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We explore two issues triggered by the crisis. First, in most advanced countries, output remains far below the pre-recession trend, suggesting hysteresis. Second, while inflation has decreased, it has decreased less than anticipated, suggesting a breakdown of the relation between inflation and activity. To examine the first, we look at 122 recessions over the past 50 years in 23 countries. We find that a high proportion of them have been followed by lower output or even lower growth. To examine the second, we estimate a Phillips curve relation over the past 50 years for 20 countries. We find that the effect of unemployment on inflation, for given expected inflation, decreased until the early 1990s, but has remained roughly stable since then. We draw implications of our findings for monetary policy.

Book Synopsis Money, Finance, and the Real Economy by : Anton Brender
Download or read book Money, Finance, and the Real Economy written by Anton Brender and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Money matters... but so does finance Starting with the link between money and economic activity, this study shows how today's financial systems have shaped the way that monetary policy is transmitted to the real economy. The information gathering and decisionmaking processes within the financial system play a key role in determining both how credit is allocated and how the risks implied by credit are borne. The study points to what went wrong during the credit boom of the 2000s, which was the counterpart to a huge accumulation of savings, concentrated mainly in emerging economies. This accumulation could well continue. Making better use of the coming savings is a challenge that authorities will have to meet if they want finance to better serve the real economy.
