French researchers have played a key role in this domain but Asia is currently the market leader. Not wanting to see history repeat itself, France created the research network on electrochemical energy storage (RS2E) in 2011. This book discusses the launch of RS2E, its stakeholders, objectives, and integrated structure that assures a continuum between basic research, technological research and industries. Here, the authors will cover the technological advances as well as the challenges that must still be resolved in the field of electrochemical storage, taking into account sustainable development and the limited time available to us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: : The development of cathode materials with excellent electrochemical performance is critical for the advancement of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in energy storage applications. LiMn2O4 (LMO) is a promising cathode material for LIBs due to its high theoretical capacity, low cost, and environmentally friendly nature. In this study, P. Anbarasi focuses on the synthesis and characterization of LMO-based cathode materials for LIBs. Various synthesis methods, including solid-state synthesis, hydrothermal synthesis, sol-gel synthesis, co-precipitation method, and combustion synthesis, have been employed to prepare LMO cathode materials. The structural characterization of these materials has been carried out using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, surface area analysis, and porosity measurements. The results show that the synthesis method plays a crucial role in determining the morphology, crystallinity, particle size, and surface area of the LMO cathode materials. The electrochemical characterization of LMO cathode materials has been conducted using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge cycling, impedance spectroscopy, and other techniques. The electrochemical performance of the LMO cathode materials has been evaluated in terms of capacity retention, rate capability, coulombic efficiency, diffusion coefficient, redox reaction, intercalation/deintercalation, and other parameters. The results demonstrate that LMO cathode materials have excellent electrochemical performance, making them suitable for use in LIBs. Furthermore, the effects of aging mechanisms, thermal stability, safety, environmental impact, and green synthesis on the performance and sustainability of LMO cathode materials have been studied. This research is significant as it provides valuable insights into the synthesis and characterization of LMO cathode materials for LIBs, which will pave the way for the development of efficient and sustainable energy storage systems.

This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents studies and discussions on anionic redox, which can be used to boost the capacities of cathode electrodes by providing extra electron transfer. This theoretically and practically significant book facilitates the implementation of anionic redox in electrodes for real-world use and accelerates the development of high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries, as energy storage systems, are playing a more and more important role in powering modern society. However, their energy density is still limited by the low specific capacity of the cathode electrodes. Based on a profound understanding of band theory, the author has achieved considerable advances in tuning the redox process of lithium-rich electrodes to obtain enhanced electrochemical performance, identifying both the stability mechanism of anionic redox in lithium-rich cathode materials, and its activation mechanism in these electrode systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Used Battery Collection and Recycling covers all aspects of spent battery collection and recycling. First of all, the legislative and regulatory updates are addressed and the main institutions and programs worldwide are mentioned. An overview of the existing battery systems, of the chemicals used in them and their hazardous properties is made, followed by a survey of the major industrial recycling processes. The safety and efficiency of such processes are stressed. Particular consideration is given to the released emissions, i.e. to the impact on human health and the environment. Methods for the evaluation of this impact are described. Several chapters deal with specific battery chemistries: lead-acid, nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride, zinc (carbon and alkaline), lithium and lithium-ion. For each type of battery, details are provided on the collection/recycling process from the technical, economic and environmental viewpoint. The chemicals recoverable from each process and remarketable are mentioned. A chapter deals with recovering of the large batteries powering electric vehicles, e.g. lead-acid, nickel-metal hydride and lithium-ion. The final chapter is devoted to the important topic of collecting batteries from used electrical and electronic equipment. The uncontrolled disposal of these devices still containing their batteries contributes to environmental pollution.

Book excerpt: This invaluable book focuses on the mechanisms of formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the electrode surfaces of lithium-ion batteries. The SEI film is due to electromechanical reduction of species present in the electrolyte. It is widely recognized that the presence of the film plays an essential role in the battery performance, and its very nature can determine an extended (or shorter) life for the battery. In spite of the numerous related research efforts, details on the stability of the SEI composition and its influence on the battery capacity are still controversial. This book carefully analyzes and discusses the most recent findings and advances on this topic.
