Book Synopsis Multimodal Transport Law by : Marian Hoeks
Download or read book Multimodal Transport Law written by Marian Hoeks and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We only have to look around us on the road while we travel to work or home, or to use our eyes at a railway station to know that the transport of goods takes up a lot of the room our modern day infrastructures provide. Sometimes perhaps a little too much; nowadays congestion seems to be the rule rather than the exception. This is an uncomfortable side effect of the explosive growth freight transport has experienced the last few decades1. Modern day transport offers a considerable array of possibilities; possibilities that are for the most part taken for granted by the general public that enjoys their benefits. The average European would not be surprised to learn that the fruit on offer in the local supermarket originates from another continent for instance. The idea that most of the things we use in our daily routine stem from a distant source, such as a cell phone from Japan, a trendy pair of designer jeans made in China or a glass of Australian wine, seems completely natural to us. Clearly the contemporary transport industry offers us a lot of benefits besides such discomforts as congestion and pollution. In earlier times, before machinery such as the steam engine had been invented it was hardly cost effective or even feasible when it came to perishables to carry goods halfway around the world if they were not at least valuable and extraordinary2. The limitations set on trade by the transport structures available did more however than simply curtail the range of affordable products on offer for the public. They also had a negative effect on the location of the industry, limited transport possibilities and forced production to take place near or in heavily populated areas to secure the necessary workforce and market possibilities. After all, industrial decentralisation is only feasible if there is an infrastructure capable of supporting a cost effective movement of goods and employees3 ...

Book Synopsis Selected Readings in the Anthropology of Religion by : Stephen D. Glazier
Download or read book Selected Readings in the Anthropology of Religion written by Stephen D. Glazier and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2003-12-30 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brings together in one volume a number of key theoretical and methodological advances in the anthropological study of religion. Chapters cover important topics not ordinarily included in books dealing with the anthropology of religion (e.g., bipedalism, the study of alcohol, film and video images, notions of religious agency). In addition, this collection is intended to build bridges between anthropologists of religion and religious studies scholars. Over the last four decades, anthropologists have grappled with the dialectical relationship between the examination of cultures from the emic, or insider, perspective, and the etic, or outsider, perspective. Nowhere is this creative tension more evident than in the anthropological study of religion. In this volume, anthropologists and religious studies scholars come to terms not only with a landscape that has shifted fundamentally, but a landscape that is still shifting. Essays in this collection raise new and important issues for the anthropological study of religion in new and important ways. In intensely personal essays, a number of contributors address two fundamental concerns in the study of religion: (1) how should anthropologists deal with the beliefs and practices of others?, and (2) how should anthropologists deal with their own religious backgrounds and beliefs as these may affect their understanding of the beliefs and practices of others? A partial resolution to both questions is necessary before the anthropological study of religion can advance to a higher level.
Download or read book Cosmotechnics written by Yuk Hui and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is initial reflections on the meaning and the implications of Yuk Hui’s notion of cosmotechnics, which opens up an anti-universalist and pluralist perspective on technology beyond the West. Martin Heidegger’s famous analysis of the essence of technology as enframing and as rooted in ancient Greek techne has had a crucial influence on the understanding and critique of technological society and culture in the twentieth century. However, it is still unclear to what extent his analysis can also be applied to the development of technology outside of ‘the West’, e.g. in China, Africa, and Latin America, particularly against the backdrop of receding Western domination and impending global ecological disaster. Acknowledging the planetary expansion of Western technology already observed by Heidegger, yet also recognizing the existence of non-Western origins of technical relationships to the cosmos, Yuk Hui’s notion of cosmotechnics calls for a rethinking – in dialogue with decolonial studies and the so-called ontological turn in contemporary anthropology – of the question concerning technology which challenges the universality still present in Heidegger (as well as in Simondon and Stiegler) and proposes a radical technological or rather cosmotechnical pluralism or technodiversity. The contributors to this volume critically engage with this proposal and examine the possible implications of Hui’s cosmotechnical turn in thinking about technology as it becomes a planetary force in our current age of the Anthropocene. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Angelaki.

Book Synopsis The Theology of the Gospel of Luke by : Joel B. Green
Download or read book The Theology of the Gospel of Luke written by Joel B. Green and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-04-20 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel of Luke, often mined for information about the life of Jesus, is also one of the earliest Christian examples of narrative theology. Unlike some writers of New Testament books, Luke has engaged in the theological task by shaping a narrative representation of the coming and mission of Jesus. In doing so, he goes to great lengths to ground the work of Jesus in the continuing story of God's redemptive plan, especially witnessed in the Scriptures, and he also emphasises the ongoing character of that story, with the result that Luke's audience is challenged to discern the purpose of God in order that they may embrace it and order their lives around it. This exploration of the way in which Luke accomplishes his theological task in the first century is both informative and illuminating for contemporary readers seeking approaches to cultural criticism and constructive theology today.
Book Synopsis Lukan Theology in the Light of the Gospel's Literary Structure by : Douglas S. McComiskey
Download or read book Lukan Theology in the Light of the Gospel's Literary Structure written by Douglas S. McComiskey and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous scholars have noted various elements of literary structure in the Gospel of Luke, many of them patterned, such as chiasm. Several of these scholars have rigorously explored the significance of such structure. A common conclusion is that if Luke is consistent with other ancient writers, then the observation of some elements of patterned structure, e.g., what has already been discovered in the Gospel, suggests that there is probably considerably more. This book offers a comprehensive literary structure for the Gospel of Luke, thoroughly and critically evaluates it, and ultimately focuses on theology that may be derived from this structure. As groundwork, the Introduction provides rigorous tests for assessing the intentionality behind proposals of parallelism. The first chapter then employs the tests in an evaluation of Robert C. Tannehill's work on Luke-Acts, which is representative of studies on correspondences that are not strictly structural in nature. His contribution enables us to grasp how Luke encourages the reader to read passages in the light of other passages within the Gospel and, accordingly, provides an interpretive aid for our study. The second chapter applies the tests to the Lukan correspondences suggested by Charles H. Talbert, which are inherently structural. His analysis of Luke-Acts and other Greco-Roman literature provides a strong theoretical foundation for our own proposal. Chapter three surveys OT, Greco-Roman, and NT texts that bear a similar patterned structure to what we discover in Luke. The structure of Luke is presented and carefully evaluated in chapter four, and the theological implications of that structure are developed in chapter five, shedding much fresh light on Lukan theology.
Book Synopsis Corporate Social Responsibility in Brazil by : Christopher Stehr
Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility in Brazil written by Christopher Stehr and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the practice of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Latin America, with a particular focus on Brazil. Drawing on historical developments and theoretical reflections alike, it introduces readers to the state of the art in Brazilian CSR. The authors present a range of regulatory and entrepreneurial frameworks that form the basis for business and CSR activities in Brazil. In a number of detailed case studies from various Brazilian institutions and enterprises, the book provides revealing insights into the practice of sustainable and responsible business conduct in this country. Subsequent chapters show the effects of anti-corruption laws, which have since informed corporations’ compliance agendas, and discuss recent, massive corruption scandals. Generally speaking, the book provides a highly informative and practice-oriented resource that successfully reconciles an ostensible contradiction – corporate social responsibility and Brazil.
