Book excerpt: "Elegant, gripping, and intricate, The Shadow Lily is a mystery the way P.D. James wrote mysteries: with depth and real humanity. I loved spending time with Detective Hanna Duncker on an island off the coast of Sweden---Oland is as chilling and atmospheric as Ann Cleeves's Shetland." —Flynn Berry, author of the New York Times Bestseller Northern Spy It’s a race against time as an island searches for a murderer and a missing child Small-town police detective Hanna Duncker has a past. Her deceased father was convicted of murder and arson long ago, and she has taken up residence and resumed her police career in her hometown after his death. She and her partner Erik Lindgren are called to investigate the disappearance of a father and his infant son from their home while his wife was away on a weekend trip. As the investigation unfolds, Hanna makes a breakthrough in her ongoing private investigation of her father’s crimes: a discovery that could change everything she thought she'd learned so far. In The Shadow Lily, Johanna Mo’s follow-up to The Night Singer, we find Hanna even further entangled in the web of relationships and partial truths that trapped her father for well over a decade. Are guilt and innocence as definite as they seem? And can she handle yet another unravelling of her family’s story?

Book excerpt: Lily Cassidy’s childhood happiness is shattered when her father is murdered by political opponents. Powerless to act against her father’s killer, she consents to a loveless marriage with Emmett Moss in exchange for his promise of vengeance. What follows this bitter deal leaves Lily standing on her own as the matriarch of a legend. When Emmett’s niece arrives at his ranch, the lady-like Claire presents a cool contrast to tomboy Lily. Known for her common sense more than her beauty, Lily forges a friendship with the delicate Claire that outlasts everything in their lives except the land itself. Set in New Mexico Territory in the 1870s, Texas Lily is the story of Lily’s courage and fortitude to save her family, Claire’s love of an outlaw that sends her into and out of madness, and the profoundly intertwined fates of their offspring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines four discourses by Kierkegaard, arguing that they play a critical and surprising role in his oeuvre and contribute to the philosophy of figural language. How do texts speak with authority? That is the question at the heart of Kierkegaard’s theory and practice of “indirect communication.” None of Kierkegaard’s texts respond to this question more concisely and powerfully than the four discourses he wrote about the lily in the Gospel. The Lily’s Tongue is a nuanced, sustained reading of these Lily Discourses. Kierkegaard takes the lilies as authoritative, rather than merely “figural” or “metaphorical.” This book is a careful exploration of what Kierkegaard means by this authority. Frances Maughan-Brown demonstrates how Kierkegaard argues that the key is in the act of reading itself—no text can have authority unless the reader grants it that authority because no text can entirely avoid figural language. Texts don’t speak directly; their tongue is always the lily’s tongue. What is revealed in the Lily Discourses is a groundbreaking theory of figure, which requires a renewed reading of Kierkegaard’s major pseudonymous works. “Closely analyzing one of the least known yet most exacting series of texts in Kierkegaard’s authorship, his discourses on ‘the lily in the field and the bird of the air,’ Maughan-Brown breaks apart disciplinary barriers between theology, philosophy, aesthetics, and critical theory, while at the same time showing how Kierkegaard’s discourses can quietly illuminate a constellation of ideas drawn from Plato, Kant, Hegel, Benjamin, and Derrida. Following Kierkegaard’s texts to the letter, Maughan-Brown attends to what his texts do as much as to what they say.” — Peter Fenves, author of The Messianic Reduction: Walter Benjamin and the Shape of Time
