Book excerpt: Now I must tell you, Grim, my dog, said Torarin, "that I have heard great news today. They told me both at Kungshall and at Kareby that the sea was frozen. Fair, calm weather it has been this long while, as you well know, who have been out in it every day; and they say the sea is frozen fast not only in the creeks and sounds, but far out over the Cattegat. There is no fairway now for ship or boat among the islands, nothing but firm, hard ice, so that a man may drive with horse and sledge as far as Marstrand and Paternoster Skerries."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DigiCat presents this meticulously edited and formatted Selma Lagerlöf collection. Selma Lagerlöf was a Swedish author and teacher. She was the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Through her studies in Stockholm, Lagerlöf reacted against the realism of contemporary Swedish-language writers such as August Strindberg. She began her first novel, Gösta Berling's Saga, while working as a teacher in Landskrona in 1887. A visit in 1900 to the American Colony in Jerusalem became the inspiration for Lagerlöf's book by that name. The royal family and the Swedish Academy gave her substantial financial support to continue her passion. Jerusalem was also acclaimed by critics, who began comparing her to Homer and Shakespeare, so that she became a popular figure both in Sweden and abroad. By 1895, she gave up her teaching to devote herself to her writing. In 1902, Lagerlöf was asked by the National Teacher's Association to write a geography book for children. She wrote The Wonderful Adventures of Nils, a novel about a boy from the southernmost part of Sweden, who had been shrunk to the size of a thumb and who travelled on the back of a goose across the country. Lagerlöf mixed historical and geographical facts about the provinces of Sweden with the tale of the boy's adventures until he managed to return home and was restored to his normal size. The novel is one of Lagerlöf's most well-known books, and it has been translated into more than 30 languages. A special emphasis is laid on the Düben Collection, one of the largest music collections of seventeenth-century Europe, preserved at the Uppsala University Library. The papers in this volume were initially presented at an international conference at Uppsala University in September 2006, held on the occasion of the launching of The Düben Collection Database Catalogue on the Internet. For the first time, the entire collection had been made acessible worldwide, covering a vast number of musical and philological aspects of all items in the collection.

Download or read book The Story of Gösta Berling written by Selma Lagerlöf and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2020-05-18 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Gösta Berling is a novel by Swedish author Selma Lagerlöf. The main character of this book, Gösta Berling, is a defrocked Lutheran priest who has been saved by the Mistress of Ekeby from freezing to death on the snowy shores of Lake Fryken (Lake Löven in the story) in Värmland and thereupon becomes one of her pensioners in the manor at Ekeby, where the storyline of the novel begins to unfold and is later on filled with many wild adventures. Using wolves, snow, supernatural elements and eccentric upper-class characters to project an exotic image of 1820s Värmland, the novel can be compared to magic realism.
