Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely survey of this significant British artist and the complexities surrounding his work and reputation today Famed for his depictions of sun, sea, and sailing during a late Victorian and Edwardian golden age, the British painter Henry Scott Tuke RA (1858-1929) is an intriguing artistic anomaly. Moving between Cornish-based artist colonies and the London art scene, stylistically Tuke presents a fusion of progressive plein airisme, loose impressionistic handling, and a vivid palette, and yet he was fundamentally an academic painter of exhibition nudes. Though consistently successful throughout his lifetime, in the wake of two world wars Tuke's depictions of bathing boys came to represent a seemingly outmoded epoch. This far-reaching study features new research from leading authorities on Victorian and Edwardian art. Essays tackle questions of wide-ranging artistic influences, experimental art practice, and a varied reception history. Tuke's repeated portrayal of adolescent male nudes provokes challenging questions about the depiction, exhibition, and reception of the body--especially the young body--both then and now.

Book excerpt: Saul Leiter (1923-2013) has been hailed as one of the great pioneers of 20th century colour photography. His body of work spans more than 70 years and is in the collections of many important museums. With the landmark publication of his monograph "Early Color" (2006) his work at last came to the fore. The book was followed by numerous exhibitions, the largest of which was a major retrospective at Deichtorhallen in Hamburg (2012). In 2013, Thomas Leach made In No Great Hurry, a full-feature documentary film about Saul Leiter and his work. But Leiter was more than a great photographer; he was and always had been a prolific painter, though this side of his creative life received far less attention. One strand among his paintings is noticeable: the art of painting over prints of nudes that he himself photographed and printed. This publication reproduces over eighty such painted nudes, created over a period of over forty years. This long overdue book sheds light on the vitality and originality of Saul Leiter s art and his mastery of colour. "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary Israeli cinema's engagement with Judaism as cultural identity and mystical tradition. Over the past several decades, the prevailing attitude toward Judaism in Israeli society has undergone a meaningful shift; where the national ethos had once deemed Judaic traditions a vestige of an arcane past incompatible with the culture of a modern state, there is now greater acceptance of these traditions by a sizeable part of Israeli society. Author Dan Chyutin reveals this trend through a parallel shift toward acceptance and celebration of Judaic identity and lifestyle in modern Israeli cinema. Hidden Light explores the Judaic turn in contemporary Israeli filmmaking for what it can tell us about Israel's cultural landscape, as well as about the cinematic medium in general. Chyutin points to the ambivalence of films which incorporate Judaism into Israel's secular ethos; concurrently, he foregrounds the films' attempt to overcome this ambivalence through reference to and activation of experiences of transcendence and unity, made popular by New Age–inflected understandings of Jewish mystical thought. By virtue of this exploration, Judaic-themed Israeli cinema emerges as a crucial example of how film's particular form of "magic" may be exploited for the purpose of affecting mystical states in the audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gloriously illustrated examination of the origins and development of the nude as an artistic subject in Renaissance Europe Reflecting an era when Europe looked to both the classical past and a global future, this volume explores the emergence and acceptance of the nude as an artistic subject. It engages with the numerous and complex connotations of the human body in more than 250 artworks by the greatest masters of the Renaissance. Paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, and book illustrations reveal private, sometimes shocking, preoccupations as well as surprising public beliefs—the Age of Humanism from an entirely new perspective. This book presents works by Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, and Martin Schongauer in the north and Donatello, Raphael, and Giorgione in the south; it also introduces names that deserve to be known better. A publication this rich in scholarship could only be produced by a variety of expert scholars; the sixteen contributors are preeminent in their fields and wide-ranging in their knowledge and curiosity. The structure of the volume—essays alternating with shorter texts on individual artworks—permits studies both broad and granular. From the religious to the magical and the poetic to the erotic, encompassing male and female, infancy, youth, and old age, The Renaissance Nude examines in a profound way what it is to be human.

Book excerpt: The highly acclaimed contemporary photographer presents his private and evocative nudes, landscapes, and close-up still lifes. Listen is in a sense a memento mori, which follows in the tradition of many photographers (Weston, Stieglitz) and artists (Cézanne) who, at a certain age, focus on the nude, landscapes, and still lifes. It highlights Mark Seliger’s personal reflections on seeing and on the passage of time. Best known for his portraits of celebrities and musicians, Listen is a compilation of works from Seliger’s private collection that captures the essence of light and shadow, and whose photographs speak to us metaphorically. The book includes more than ninety tritones, each printed with a turn-of-the-century platinum palladium photographic process, a process that results in a highly detailed, rich texture. Many of the photographs were made especially for this book and will be published for the first time. In 2009, Seliger was the recipient of the Lucie Award for outstanding achievement in portraiture.
