Book excerpt: Silicon photonics technology, which has the DNA of silicon electronics technology, promises to provide a compact photonic integration platform with high integration density, mass-producibility, and excellent cost performance. This technology has been used to develop and to integrate various photonic functions on silicon substrate. Moreover, photonics-electronics convergence based on silicon substrate is now being pursued. Thanks to these features, silicon photonics will have the potential to be a superior technology used in the construction of energy-efficient cost-effective apparatuses for various applications, such as communications, information processing, and sensing. Considering the material characteristics of silicon and difficulties in microfabrication technology, however, silicon by itself is not necessarily an ideal material. For example, silicon is not suitable for light emitting devices because it is an indirect transition material. The resolution and dynamic range of silicon-based interference devices, such as wavelength filters, are significantly limited by fabrication errors in microfabrication processes. For further performance improvement, therefore, various assisting materials, such as indium-phosphide, silicon-nitride, germanium-tin, are now being imported into silicon photonics by using various heterogeneous integration technologies, such as low-temperature film deposition and wafer/die bonding. These assisting materials and heterogeneous integration technologies would also expand the application field of silicon photonics technology. Fortunately, silicon photonics technology has superior flexibility and robustness for heterogeneous integration. Moreover, along with photonic functions, silicon photonics technology has an ability of integration of electronic functions. In other words, we are on the verge of obtaining an ultimate technology that can integrate all photonic and electronic functions on a single Si chip. This e-Book aims at covering recent developments of the silicon photonic platform and novel functionalities with heterogeneous material integrations on this platform.

Book excerpt: The considerable proliferation of new glasses during the second half of the 20th century (germanate, vanadate, bismuthate, tellurite, chalchogenide glasses, etc.) brought about the use the plural form of the 4 generic glass denomination, in order to be able to index each emerging glass family by its proper name, as well as to classify them methodically. Together with its great compositional versatility, the peculiar characteristics of glass (non-crystalline structure with short-range order, continuous network with no intergranular boundaries, isotropy, easy to be formed into a plastic state inside a wide temperature range) allow for a freedom of design and adaptability that few materials are able to offer. All these circumstances have contributed to the fact that, in the last seventy years, glass has acquired the multiple and varied appearance of its new families, without losing neither its original image nor its soda-lime-silica traditional composition, destined for the huge industrial manufacture of its conventional products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted tremendous interest since the study of graphene in the early 21st century. With their thickness in the angstrom-to-nanometer range, 2D materials, including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, phosphorene, silicene, and other inorganic and organic materials, can be an ideal platform to study fundamental many-body interactions because of reduced screening and can also be further engineered for nanophotonic applications. This book compiles research outcomes of leading groups in the field of 2D materials for nanophotonic physics and devices. It describes research advances of 2D materials for various nanophotonic applications, including ultrafast lasers, atomically thin optical lenses, and gratings to inelastically manipulate light propagation, their integrations with photonic nanostructures, and light–matter interactions. The book focuses on actual applications, while digging into the physics underneath. It targets advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level students of nanotechnology and researchers in nanotechnology, physics, and chemistry, especially those with an interest in 2D materials.

Book excerpt: Compound Semiconductors 2004 was the 31st Symposium in this distinguished international series, held at Hoam Convention Center of Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea from September 12 to September 16, 2004. It attracted over 180 submissions from leading scientists in academic and industrial research institutions, and remains a major forum for the compound semiconductor research community since the first one held in 1966 at Edinburgh, UK under the name of 'International Symposium on Gallium Arsenide and related Compounds'. These proceedings provide an international perspective on the latest research and an overview of recent, important developments in III-V compounds, II-VI compounds and IV-IV compounds. In the total of 106 papers, notable progress was reported in the development of zinc oxide and spintronics. Steady advances were seen in traditional topics such as III-V based electronic and optoelectronic devices, growth and processing, and characterization. Novel research trends were observed in quantum structures, such as quantum wires and dots, which are promising for future developments in nanotechnology. As the primary forum for research into these materials and their device applications the book is an essential reference for researchers working on compound semiconductors in semiconductor physics, device physics, materials science, chemistry and electronic and electrical engineering.
