Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1822 Elijah Mounts, barely eighteen, shoulders his rifle and walks from his uncle's Missouri farm to Saint Louis to seek his fortune in the fur trade. Frank B. Linderman's 1922 novel is a first-person account, based on a true story and his own trapping experience, of a young man's coming of age among the trappers and Indians in remote Montana, on the upper reaches of the wild Missouri River. Befriended by Wash Lamkin, "Dad" to all who know him, "Lige" learns to live on the trail, trap the beaver, hunt the buffalo, speak the Cree language, and observe the customs of the country and its people. Enamored of the freedom, wildness, and beauty of the high plains and tied to the people at whose hands he has experienced kindness, welcome, and acceptance, he must ultimately decide whether he will return to civilization or choose the life of a plainsman. Frank B. Linderman (1869-1938) was a Montana miner, trapper, newspaperman, politician, and chronicler of Indian life and culture. His many works include The Montana Stories of Frank B. Linderman, Indian Why Stories: Sparks from War Eagle's Lodge-Fire, and Indian Old-Man Stories: More Sparks from War Eagle's Lodge-Fire, all available in Bison Books editions. David J. Wishart, a professor of geography at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is the author of An Unspeakable Sadness: The Dispossession of the Nebraska Indians and the editor of The Encyclopedia of the Great Plains, both available from the University of Nebraska Press. Sarah Waller Hatfield is Linderman's granddaughter.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lige Mounts: Free Trapper I came to Montana Territory when I was a boy. The country was wild, and essentially a land of youth. Men referred to as "old Bill" or "old Hank" were often in their prime, and proud of their strength and fitness. Their ways were those of a wilderness unspoiled, and primitiveness traditional, a proof of character. An extra blanket or frying-pan in their meagre packs was disgraceful, and in the eyes of his fellows lessened the possessor's worth as a "good man." The life they led fascinated me, and I became a trapper with them, my partner being a man who had grown gray in the wilderness. He felt a pride in owning a fast horse, a dead-centre rifle, the shortest camp-equipment, and the scantiest bed-roll in the Territory; and nothing stirred him as did the sight of a fence. I shall never forget his displeasure and chagrin when he learned that Montana had ceased to be a Territory and had become a State in the Union. "Now she's gone to hell for keeps," he sighed. And I believed him. He knew the ways of the Indian, and through him I became the Indian's friend, learning more than he had known of their customs and beliefs; although after so many years of acquaintance the Indian remains to mo still a man of mystery. Guthrie's life and legacy in Fifty Years after The Big Sky: New Perspectives on the Fiction and Films of A. B. Guthrie, Jr. Best known for his novels, The Big Sky and The Way West and as the author of the screenplay for the movie classic Shane, A. B. Guthrie is a much-loved but under-studied Montana author. There has been almost no serious study of Guthrie's work, until now. This wide-ranging anthology examines this beloved western author in multiple contexts. Essays examine Guthrie's relationship with the movie industry; how the Cold War influenced Guthrie's work; how people in his hometown of Choteau, Montana, and others close to him remember the man; and how the myths that lie at the core of Guthrie's fiction haunt today's Montanans.
