Book excerpt: The relationship between the lesbian/gay/bisexual (LGB) community and the religious community has, historically, been difficult and tenuous. Religious institutions are often condemning or uncomfortable with LGB members, and, consequently, navigating both LGB sexual identity and religious identity can be challenging. It is often in college that individuals struggle and come to terms with religious and sexual identities, making the college years of great importance in understanding the difficulties in reconciling these two aspects, and in searching for healthy and practical ways of facilitating this reconciliation. The goal of the current study was to ascertain if a certain kind of faith - namely, a more open-ended, questioning, abstract form of faith - would better facilitate LGB identity synthesis. It was predicted that conflicted LGB identity (as measured by the LGBIS subscales for homonegativity, need for privacy, and difficult process) would be negatively correlated with Quest scores and self-esteem. To test this hypothesis, a survey was administered to 71 participants, of whom 49 identified as members of a sexual minority and, therefore, qualified for inclusion in the study. The survey consisted of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Identity Scale (LGBIS); the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSS); the Religious Orientation Scale (ROS); and Batson's Interactional Scale (Quest). Results showed that self-esteem was, as predicted, negatively correlated with the specified subscales of the LGBIS: internalized homonegativity, identity confusion, and difficult process. It was also positively correlated with high scores on the need for acceptance subscale, which was not expected. A significant correlation between need for acceptance and overall religious/spiritual affiliation was also observed, suggesting that members of sexual minorities are more reliant on societal approval when they identify as religious and/or spiritual. While there was no significant correlation observed between the predicted LGBIS subscales and Quest, data trends indicate a tendency for higher scores of identity confusion. Later studies with larger sample sizes may yield more definitive results.
