Book Synopsis The Lessons of War by : William Van der Kloot
Download or read book The Lessons of War written by William Van der Kloot and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2008-07-14 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Van der Kloot examines the experiences of seven future national leaders during the World War I. Adolf Hitler served on the Western Front for four years; Charles de Gaulle was bayoneted and captured at Verdun; Benito Mussolini was so badly wounded that he was discharged as a hero; Gustav Mannerheim was a cavalry commander who fought on the Eastern Front; Mustafa Kemal Atatürk commanded a division at the Battle of Gallipoli; Harold Macmillan was wounded at Loos and again at the Somme; and Herbert Hoover, although a civilian, organized humanitarian relief in German-occupied Europe, especially Belgium. Combining information gleaned from memoirs, diaries, biographies, and regimental histories, this book illustrates how these experiences formed them into the men remembered by history.
Book Synopsis Historical and Comparative Linguistics by : Raimo Anttila
Download or read book Historical and Comparative Linguistics written by Raimo Anttila and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In any course of historical and comparative linguistics there will be students of different language backgrounds, different levels of linguistic training, and different theoretical orientation. This textbook attempts to mitigate the problems raised by this heterogeneity in a number of ways. Since it is impossible to treat the language or language family of special interest to every student, the focus of this book is on English in particular and Indo-European languages in general, with Finnish and its closely related languages for contrast. The tenets of different schools of linguistics, and the controversies among them, are treated eclectically and objectively; the examination of language itself plays the leading role in our efforts to ascertain the comparative value of competing theories. This revised edition (1989) of a standard work for comparative linguists offers an added introduction dealing mainly with a semiotic basis of change, a final chapter on aspects of explanation, particularly in historical and human disciplines, and added sections on comparative syntax and on the semiotic status of the comparative method.
Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of the Music and Musicians of Finland by : Barbara B. Hong
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Music and Musicians of Finland written by Barbara B. Hong and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1997-12-30 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting information heretofore difficult or impossible to find in English, this work opens a window on the colorful panorama of Finnish music. The 500-plus entries present historical and modern composers, the accomplishments of hundreds of internationally acclaimed performing artists, as well as more general articles on folk music, early manuscripts and publications, cantors and hymnals, early Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Lutheran music, leading orchestras and choral groups, festivals, and much more. No other such extensive and comprehensive work on Finnish music exists in any language other than Finnish and Swedish. This English-language dictionary makes the subject available to readers throughout the world. In addition to the entries, chronologies of Finnish history and Finnish music, as well as a map of Finland, correlate history and locations with the entries. A general bibliography and entry-specific bibliographies offer further resources. The Dictionary interprets a sometimes limited amount of available information, describing forms and styles of compositions, operatic roles performed, the content of scholarly work, and significant and unusual events in the lives of the musicians.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Orthography and Literacy by : R. Malatesha Joshi
Download or read book Handbook of Orthography and Literacy written by R. Malatesha Joshi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-31 with total page 1082 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until about two decades ago, the study of writing systems and their relationship to literacy acquisition was sparse and generally modeled after studies of English language learners. This situation is now changing. As the worldwide demand for literacy continues to grow, researchers from different countries with different language backgrounds have begun examining the connection between their writing systems and literacy acquisition. This text, which derives from a NATO sponsored conference on orthography and literacy, brings together the research of seventy scholars from across the world--the largest assemblage of such experts to date. Their findings are grouped into three parts, as follows: Part I, Literacy Acquisition in Different Writing Systems, describes the relationship between orthography and literacy in twenty-five orthographic systems. This section serves as a handy reference source for understanding the orthographies of languages as diverse as Arabic, Chinese, English, Icelandic, Kannada, and Kishwahili. Part II, Literacy Acquisition From a Cross-Linguistic Perspective, makes direct comparisons of literacy acquisition in English and other orthographic systems. The overall conclusion that emerges from these eight chapters is that the depth of an orthographic system does influence literacy acquisition primarily by slowing down the acquisition of reading skills. Even so, studies show that dyslexic readers can be found across all orthographic systems whether shallow or deep, which shows that dyslexia also has internal cognitive and biological components. Part III, Literacy Acquisition: Instructional Perspectives, explores literacy acquisition from developmental and instructional perspectives and ends with a look into the future of literacy research. This Handbook is appropriate for scholars, researchers, and graduate students in such diverse fields as cognitive psychology, psycholinguistics, literacy education, English as a second language, and communication disorders.
