Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BIOGRAPHERS have already told us much about St. Louis De Montfort and the Rosary; now, with this first English edition of THE SECRET OF THE ROSARY, we can listen to Montfort speaking for himself. Drawing upon his own experience as well as upon the experience of others, he endeavors to bring home to the reader, “in a simple and straightforward manner,” as he himself tells us, the authentic message of the Rosary; namely, that it is a veritable school of Christian life. He sees it as including essentially the meditation of the mysteries of the life, death and glory of Jesus and Mary, with a view not only to honoring but especially imitating their virtues as held up to our consideration in each mystery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Search of Milaʼs Collected Songs – Back to the Basics is a comparative study of Tibetan texts with stories and songs of the great yogin and poet Milarepa, written between the 12th and the 15th centuries. By comparing these texts, the evolution of the narratives and the songs related to the lineages in which the texts were transmitted comes to light. The research leads up to the m ost famous Tibetan text regarding Milarepa, Tsangnyön Herukaʼs Life and Songs – The Life of Milarepa and The Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa. The analysis of the evolution in the life-and-song stories allows us to evaluate the iconic image of the great yogin as depicted by Tsangnyön Heruka. The book consists of two main parts. Part One assesses the available sources, classified according to the period and the lineages in which they were produced. In Chapter 1, the biographies before Tsangnyön are studied. In Chapter 2, the specific characteristics of Tsangnyönʼs work are highlighted as compared to the earlier works. Chapter 3 considers some doctrinal aspects and their evolutions in all these works. The first part ends with the conclusions drawn from the comparative study. Part Two consists of translations relative to the research. This part is divided into ten chapters. The first one (Chapter 4) is a translation of Milarepa's hitherto unstudied life story by one of his main disciples, Ngendzong Tonpa. Chapters 5, 6 and 7 are translations of specific topics as they appear in all the different texts: Milarepa's stay with his teacher Marpa, the encounter between Milarepa and Gampopa, and the teaching transmission of a specific meditation tradition from Milarepa to his disciple Rechungpa. Chapter 8 describes interesting details found in a text by Zhijé Ripa. Chapter 9 compares the episode of a dying Bönpo, in the different texts. In Chapter 10 three episodes from the biographical compendium ʽLife and Songs of the Glorious Laughing Vajraʼ are studied and compared with Tsangnyön Herukaʼs version. Chapter 11 gives an interesting interpretation of certain features of Milaʼs encounters with non-human beings due to the interconnections between inner winds and outer appearances. Chapter 12 analyses the colophons of the most ancient Chapters in the texts, regarding Milaʼs interactions with the Tseringma long-life sisters. Chapter 13 gives Milaʼs instructions on the intermediate states. Here two different texts explaining the same instructions are compared to each other. Then follows a bibliography and an appendix containing 8 Song Charts, in which the chapters and the songs in all these works are localised.

Book Synopsis Flannery at the Grammys by : Irwin H. Streight
Download or read book Flannery at the Grammys written by Irwin H. Streight and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2024-06-20 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A devout Catholic, a visionary—and some say prophetic—writer, Flannery O’Connor (1925–1964) has gained a growing presence in contemporary popular culture. While O’Connor professed that she did not have an ear for music, allusions to her writing appear in the lyrics and narrative form of some of the most celebrated musicians on the contemporary music scene. Flannery at the Grammys sounds the extensive influence of this southern author on the art and vision of a suite of American and British singer-songwriters and pop groups. Author Irwin H. Streight invites critical awareness of O’Connor’s resonance in the products of popular music culture—in folk, blues, rock, gospel, punk, heavy metal, and indie pop songs by some of the most notable figures in the popular music business. Streight examines O'Connor's influence on the art and vision of multiple Grammy Award winners Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams, R.E.M., and U2, along with celebrated songwriters Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Sufjan Stevens, Mary Gauthier, Tom Waits, and others. Despite her orthodox religious, and at times controversial, views and limited literary output, O’Connor has left a curiously indelible mark on the careers of the successful musicians discussed in this volume. Still, her acknowledged influence and remarkable presence in contemporary pop and rock songs has not been well noted by pop music critics and/or literary scholars. Many years in the making, Flannery at the Grammys achieves groundbreaking work in cultural studies and combines in-depth literary and pop music scholarship to engage the informed devotee and the casual reader alike.

Book Synopsis Around the Boree Log, and Other Verses by : John O'Brien
Download or read book Around the Boree Log, and Other Verses written by John O'Brien and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John O'Brien's 'Around the Boree Log, and Other Verses' is a collection of poetry that celebrates Australian rural life and culture with a deep sense of nostalgia and appreciation. Written in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, O'Brien's work reflects the literary context of Australian bush poetry, drawing inspiration from the likes of Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson. His verse is characterized by its simplicity and sincerity, portraying the beauty and hardship of life in the outback. John O'Brien, a Catholic priest born Patrick Joseph Hartigan, used his experiences in rural New South Wales to shape his poetry and provide insight into the values and struggles of the Australian bush people. His deep connection to the land and its people shines through in his heartfelt and often humorous verses, making him a beloved figure in Australian literature. I highly recommend 'Around the Boree Log, and Other Verses' to readers interested in Australian poetry and the depiction of rural life. O'Brien's work captures the essence of the outback while offering a glimpse into the heart and soul of the Australian bushmen.
