Simple yet refined wording makes its content easily understandable for all kinds of readers. The author takes into account the discoveries of modern science about our world, our environment and our bodies, looking for and finding answers to all the unanswered questions in ancient Indian and Greek wisdom. „This book will not be kept on my bookshelf but will remain on my table and I’m going to read it for the rest of my life. I’m going to learn from it and will meditate on issues covered in it. The wisdom, Gupta relies on and carries in his heart and soul is not a religion, nor a philosophy, nor a belief, nor a science; but is a metaphysical knowledge. It is the only and absolute ancient knowledge, which deals with questions that govern the world and human existence.” Péter Müller „Gupta is a true man of the world. He has wide knowledge of modern scientific and intellectual developments. But he is also acquainted with the wisdom of the past. He is well equipped to speak to an international audience of intellectuals, religionists, and political leaders about the nature of our modern problems and the way forward to practical solutions. The solutions Gupta presents are based on the best that modern science and ancient wisdom have to offer us. By offering new ways of understanding who we are and where we are, based on his deep acquaintance with source of traditional wisdom, both Eastern and Western, Gupta gives us hope of a better future. “ Michael A. Book excerpt: Longlisted for the FT/McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award A groundbreaking chronicle of the birth--and death--of a pair of jeans, that exposes the fractures in our global supply chains, and our relationships to each other, ourselves, and the planet Take a look at your favorite pair of jeans. Maybe you bought them on Amazon or the Gap; maybe the tag says "Made in Bangladesh" or "Made in Sri Lanka." But do you know where they really came from, how many thousands of miles they crossed, or the number of hands who picked, spun, wove, dyed, packaged, shipped, and sold them to get to you? The fashion industry operates with radical opacity, and it's only getting worse to disguise countless environmental and labor abuses. It epitomizes the ravages inherent in the global economy, and all in the name of ensuring that we keep buying more while thinking less about its real cost. In Unraveled, entrepreneur, researcher, and advocate Maxine Bédat follows the life of an American icon--a pair of jeans--to reveal what really happens to give us our clothes. We visit a Texas cotton farm figuring out how to thrive without relying on fertilizers that poison the earth. Inside dyeing and weaving factories in China, where chemicals that are banned in the West slosh on factory floors and drain into waterways used to irrigate local family farms. Sewing floors in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are crammed with women working for illegally low wages to produce garments as efficiently as machines. Back in America, our jeans get stowed, picked, and shipped out by Amazon warehouse workers pressed to be as quick as the robots primed to replace them. Finally, those jeans we had to have get sent to landfills--or, if they've been "donated," shipped back around the world to Africa, where they're sold for pennies in secondhand markets or buried and burned in mountains of garbage. A sprawling, deeply researched, and provocative tour-de-force, Unraveled is not just the story of a pair of pants, but also the story of our global economy and our role in it. Told with piercing insight and unprecedented reporting, Unraveled challenges us to use our relationship with our jeans--and all that we wear--to reclaim our central role as citizens to refashion a society in which all people can thrive and preserve the planet for generations to come.

Book excerpt: Developing a cybernetic model of subjectivity and personhood that honors disability experiences to reconceptualize the category of the human Twentieth-century neuroscience fixed the brain as the basis of consciousness, the self, identity, individuality, even life itself, obscuring the fundamental relationships between bodies and the worlds that they inhabit. In Unraveling, Matthew J. Wolf-Meyer draws on narratives of family and individual experiences with neurological disorders, paired with texts by neuroscientists and psychiatrists, to decenter the brain and expose the ableist biases in the dominant thinking about personhood. Unraveling articulates a novel cybernetic theory of subjectivity in which the nervous system is connected to the world it inhabits rather than being walled off inside the body, moving beyond neuroscientific, symbolic, and materialist approaches to the self to focus instead on such concepts as animation, modularity, and facilitation. It does so through close readings of memoirs by individuals who lost their hearing or developed trauma-induced aphasia, as well as family members of people diagnosed as autistic—texts that rethink modes of subjectivity through experiences with communication, caregiving, and the demands of everyday life. Arguing for a radical antinormative bioethics, Unraveling shifts the discourse on neurological disorders from such value-laden concepts as “quality of life” to develop an inclusive model of personhood that honors disability experiences and reconceptualizes the category of the human in all of its social, technological, and environmental contexts.

Sloan takes us on a wild ride through the world of music video shoots, expensive hotels, and arena tours—showing us the darkness that threatens just below the surface.” —Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones and The Six “I didn't know I was waiting for a smart, literary writer to craft a novel about the rise and fall of a teen star akin to Britney Spears until I discovered The Unraveling of Cassidy Holmes. A witty, bright, hilarious—and at times devastating—read. I loved it." —Amanda Eyre Ward, New York Times bestselling author of The Jetsetters Cassidy Holmes isn't just a celebrity. She is “Sassy Gloss,” the fourth member of the hottest pop group America has ever seen. Hotter than Britney dancing with a snake, hotter than Christina getting dirrty, Gloss was the pop act that everyone idolized. Fans couldn't get enough of them, their music, and the drama that followed them like moths to a flame—until the group’s sudden implosion in 2002. And at the center of it all was Sassy Cassy, the Texan with a signature smirk that had everyone falling for her. But now she's dead. Suicide. The world is reeling from this unexpected news, but no one is more shocked than the three remaining Glossies. Fifteen years ago, Rose, Merry, and Yumi had been the closest to Cassidy, and this loss is hitting them hard. Before the group split, they each had a special bond with Cassidy—truths they told, secrets they shared. But after years apart, each of them is wondering: what could they have done? Told in multiple perspectives—including Cassidy herself—and different timelines, this is a behind-the-scenes look into the rise and fall of a pop icon, and a penetrating examination of the dark side of celebrity and the industry that profits from it.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Discover the game-changing theory of the cycles of history and what past generations can teach us about living through times of upheaval—with deep insights into the roles that Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials have to play—now with a new preface by Neil Howe. First comes a High, a period of confident expansion. Next comes an Awakening, a time of spiritual exploration and rebellion. Then comes an Unraveling, in which individualism triumphs over crumbling institutions. Last comes a Crisis—the Fourth Turning—when society passes through a great and perilous gate in history. William Strauss and Neil Howe will change the way you see the world—and your place in it. With blazing originality, The Fourth Turning illuminates the past, explains the present, and reimagines the future. Most remarkably, it offers an utterly persuasive prophecy about how America’s past will predict what comes next. Strauss and Howe base this vision on a provocative theory of American history. The authors look back five hundred years and uncover a distinct pattern: Modern history moves in cycles, each one lasting about the length of a long human life, each composed of four twenty-year eras—or “turnings”—that comprise history’s seasonal rhythm of growth, maturation, entropy, and rebirth. Illustrating this cycle through a brilliant analysis of the post–World War II period, The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for this rendezvous with destiny.

Has doing this ever changed your life?In this book, you'll learn how to use a series of simple personality tests to permanently change your life. These tests enable you to describe with just five words the part of you which is measurably unique. Indeed, of the six billion people on the planet, there are only 120 just like you. Thus once you know these five words, you'll have the power to predict much of what you'll think, feel, say, and do.You'll also learn where this power comes from-from a personality theory the likes of which the world has never seen. For one thing, it's fractal. Thus like the fabled onion of personality and the Russian nesting dolls, everything in it connects to and resembles everything else. For another, it uses everyday language. So you won't need to spend years painfully ingesting-and trying to understand-mountains of psychobabble and statistical fecal matter.Best of all though, in it, no one is blamed or broken or evil or worthless. We're all just human, each doing our best to find our own truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once I started writing, it became an addiction for me. And although I've been writing for over 50 years now, this is my very first publication. The feelings and emotions felt for various situations and circumstances unravel throughout this work. Some are very pleasant-canoeing down an early morning river. Some are most unwelcome-children hungering for food and thirsting for love. All life constantly unwinds...unravels. Nothing can stop it or hold it in check. Many events contribute to its final ending. Within these pages are some of my values, expectations, and priorities, a synopsis of what is good and what is evil. It is intended to allow for wonder to inspire, to make you laugh a little, and to encourage care and concern for others. But also, it will sometimes show the darker side of our presence here on earth. Human beings have a great responsibility to tend and care for our planet (Genesis 2:15). Sometimes we do, and sometimes we fail miserably. We are the first fruits of God's creation and have the God-given ability to rule over every other creature. But ability without wisdom and love will inevitably lead to disaster. Just as Jesus was crucified because of envy, greed, hatred, and ignorance, we can also "crucify" the earth God gave us to nourish. So here is a single voice, spanning over 5 decades, that will continue unraveling until it also comes to rest and eventually will only be remembered by God and by the contents of this tiny book.
