Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The claim once made by philosophers of unique knowledge of the essence of humanity and society has fallen into disrepute. Neither Platonic forms, divine revelation nor metaphysical truth can serve as the ground for legitimating social and political norms. On the political level many seem to agree that democracy doesn’t need foundations. Nor are its citizens expected to discuss the worth of their comprehensive conceptions of the good life. According to Rawls, for example, we have to accept that “politics in a democratic society can never be guided by what we see as the whole truth (...)”. (1993: 243) And yet we still call upon truth when we participate in defining the basic structure our society and argue why our opinions, beliefs and preferences need to be taken seriously. We do not think that our views need to be taken into account by others because they are our views, but because we think they are true. If in a democratic society citizens have to deal with the challenge of affirming their claims as true, we need to analyse the precise relationship between truth and democracy. Does truth matter to democracy and if so, what is the place of truth in democratic politics? How can citizens affirm the truth of their claims and accept - at the same time - that their truth is just one amongst many? Our book centers on the role of the public sphere in these pressing questions. It tries to give a comprehensive answer to these questions from the perspective of the main approaches of contemporary democratic theory: deliberative democracy, political pragmatism and liberalism. A confrontation of these approaches, will result in a more encompassing philosophical understanding of our plural democracy, which – in this era of globalization – is more complex than ever before. Because a good understanding of the function, meaning and shortcomings of the public sphere is essential to answering these questions, a good deal of the book addresses these issues. Historically, after all, the idea that citizens have to engage each other in discussion in order to determine the structure and goals of society, is connected to the rational ideal of a public sphere where conflicting views can be expressed, formed, and transformed. But hasn’t the collective decision making in which everyone participates on an equal footing turned out to be a deceptive ideal or a simple illusion? Not every individual in society has equal access to the podium. Furthermore, power, being an inevitable feature of the public sphere, seems to permanently endanger its democratic value. Moreover, the existence of this sphere depends on a specific ethos and particular public spaces where citizens are called upon to present themselves as citizens, as people taking responsibility for their society. It is not clear whether this ethos and these spaces exist at all, and if so, if they preserved their ascribed capacity for constituting ‘democratic’ truth? By answering these questions we expect to deepen our understanding of the relation between truth and democracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel contribution to the age-old debate about free will versus determinism. Do we consciously cause our actions, or do they happen to us? Philosophers, psychologists, neuroscientists, theologians, and lawyers have long debated the existence of free will versus determinism. In this book Daniel Wegner offers a novel understanding of the issue. Like actions, he argues, the feeling of conscious will is created by the mind and brain. Yet if psychological and neural mechanisms are responsible for all human behavior, how could we have conscious will? The feeling of conscious will, Wegner shows, helps us to appreciate and remember our authorship of the things our minds and bodies do. Yes, we feel that we consciously will our actions, Wegner says, but at the same time, our actions happen to us. Although conscious will is an illusion, it serves as a guide to understanding ourselves and to developing a sense of responsibility and morality. Approaching conscious will as a topic of psychological study, Wegner examines the issue from a variety of angles. He looks at illusions of the will—those cases where people feel that they are willing an act that they are not doing or, conversely, are not willing an act that they in fact are doing. He explores conscious will in hypnosis, Ouija board spelling, automatic writing, and facilitated communication, as well as in such phenomena as spirit possession, dissociative identity disorder, and trance channeling. The result is a book that sidesteps endless debates to focus, more fruitfully, on the impact on our lives of the illusion of conscious will.

Book excerpt: LIFE IS AN ILLUSION, Your soul is dreaming: is the biography of spiritual milestones of a fictional character, named Nathanial, narrated by his soul. Boundless without nationality, gender, religion or politics, his soul's only allegiance is to his creator, and so it is free to speak truth without fear of reprisal. The story presupposes that life is not real but is the dream of the soul that lives within Nathaniel. As with every human being, the soul that lives inside is as close to God as one can get without awakening from the dream of life through death....And God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. ----Genesis 2:7 Although every human being has the ability to freely access his soul, in the dream, few bother to do so. In spite of "mountains" of ancient and modern-day texts regarding the lessons of the Christ and other spiritual leaders, those lessons are routinely preached about but are seldom emulated. There is no shortage of good advice along the way. Advice such as:But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. ----Matthew 6:33.But all too often, such sage advice falls on deaf ears. Resident in every human being, the soul is the exclusive portal to the Kingdom of God. Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, "The Kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'there it is,' because the Kingdom of God is within you." ----Luke 17:20-21 In the dream of life many things seem unfair, but everything is perfect and in divine order. All the problems of the world are caused by mankind. Although stepping stones such as earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornados, sickness, famine and war are often mistaken for obstacles, they are divine challenges placed before humankind to facilitate their spiritual transformation. It is their greed, selfishness and unwillingness to trust the wisdom of the creator that causes them to commit unspeakable acts of violence against their brethren. They rape, pillage, threaten and slaughter in their relentless pursuit of money, power and control. But as it turns out, life is nothing more than an illusion, and they end their life the same as they started, powerless and bereft of material possessions, and most without ever having found enlightenment, spiritual transformation or ever discovering the true meaning of life. The meaning of life is to give life meaning ----Ken Hudgins

Book excerpt: I began writing this piece (and those to follow) as a way to raise/guide my children as in the event of my demise and reaching out to a future generation that I may never see. Without a focus in life, a person can go insane. So, this is a way of providing a compass to those adrift in the sea of life. This has led me also to consider "fatherless children", who may also need a little guidance in the absence of one or both parents/guardians. Soon I recognized that we all could use some extra guidance and reassurance in this world of "opinions over values"""the truth of "values" and the value of "truth". This is but an attempt to help hold on to values of another time while navigating our own. If the world suffered a "reset" and it had to be built back up, can we make it just as good? Can we make it better? As we look through the myriad of works throughout the ages, we see the same themes emerge, the same lessons learned, and the same maxims universally ignored as time marches on. Looking through different works and the observation of the world today can show us clues, some subtle while others are not, we examine the societal mentality, whether it is a palace or a prison, and one can escape or penetrate these social norms""but who says they are normal?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us believe that we are unique and coherent individuals, but are we? The idea of a "self" has existed ever since humans began to live in groups and become sociable. Those who embrace the self as an individual in the West, or a member of the group in the East, feel fulfilled and purposeful. This experience seems incredibly real but a wealth of recent scientific evidence reveals that this notion of the independent, coherent self is an illusion - it is not what it seems. Reality as we perceive it is not something that objectively exists, but something that our brains construct from moment to moment, interpreting, summarizing, and substituting information along the way. Like a science fiction movie, we are living in a matrix that is our mind. In The Self Illusion, Dr. Bruce Hood reveals how the self emerges during childhood and how the architecture of the developing brain enables us to become social animals dependent on each other. He explains that self is the product of our relationships and interactions with others, and it exists only in our brains. The author argues, however, that though the self is an illusion, it is one that humans cannot live without. But things are changing as our technology develops and shapes society. The social bonds and relationships that used to take time and effort to form are now undergoing a revolution as we start to put our self online. Social networking activities such as blogging, Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter threaten to change the way we behave. Social networking is fast becoming socialization on steroids. The speed and ease at which we can form alliances and relationships is outstripping the same selection processes that shaped our self prior to the internet era. This book ventures into unchartered territory to explain how the idea of the self will never be the same again in the online social world.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... But who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment -- a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.
