Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferguson considers the thinking of four major Canadian political economists who developed their ideas while building the discipline of political economy at Queen's University. He demonstrates that the four clearly argued on behalf of the new liberalism, emphasizing individual rights and positive government, and suggests that their ideas reveal an intellectual position which differed from the imperialist and continentalist alternatives that dominated Canadian thinking at the time. Book excerpt: In ten original studies, former students and colleagues of Maurice Careless, one of Canada's most distinguished historians, explore both traditional and hitherto neglected topics in the development of nineteenth-century Ontario. Their papers incorporate the three themes that characterize their mentor's scholarly efforts: metropolitan-hinterland relations; urban development; and the impact of 'limited identities' -- gender, class, ethnicity and regionalism -- that shaped the lives of Old Ontarians. Traditional topics -- colonial-imperial tension and the growth of Canadian autonomy in the Union period, the making of a 'compact' in early York, politics in pre-Rebellion Toronto, and the social vision of the late Upper Canadian elites -- are re-examined with fresh sensitivity and new sources. Maters about which little has been written -- urban perspectives on rural and Northern Ontario, Protestant revivals, an Ontario style in church architecture, the late-nineteenth-century ready-made clothing industry, Native-Newcomer conflict to the 1860s, and the separate and unequal experiences of women and men student teachers at the Provincial Normal school -- receive equally insightful treatment. An appreciative biography of Careless, an analysis of the relativism underpinning his approach to national and Ontario history, and a listing of Careless's publications, complete this stimulating collection.

Book Synopsis Courted and Abandoned by : Patrick Brode
Download or read book Courted and Abandoned written by Patrick Brode and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2002-12-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pregnancy outside of marriage was a traumatic event in frontier Canada, one that had profound legal implications, not only for the mother, but also for the woman's family, the alleged father, and for the entire community. Patrick Brode examines the history of the 'heartbalm' torts in nineteenth-century Canada – breaches of duty leading to liability for damages for seduction, breach of promise of marriage, and criminal conversation – that were part of the inherited English law and were a major feature of early Canadian law. Encompassing all ten Canadian provinces, Brode's study examines the court cases and the communities in which they arose. He illustrates the progression of these 'heartbalm' actions as women gained more and more autonomy in the late nineteenth century, until questions arose as to the applicability of these feudal remedies in a modern society. He argues that the heartbalm cases are a testament to how early Canadians tried to control sexuality and courtship, even consensual activity among adults. In mixing legal and social issues, and showing how they interact, Courted and Abandoned makes a significant contribution to legal history, women's studies, and cultural history.

This book was released on 1933-12-15 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of economic documents resumes the story of the development of Canada as told by contemporary sources. Newspaper accounts of economic forces and factors, contemporary writings by statesmen and business men, poems depicting current situations, official documents—all have been included. The volume divides the period into two eras, 1783-1850 and 1850-85. The basis of classification of entries is by topics and geographic sections. It is hoped that the material which follows will amplify and illustrate the blend of materialistic and non-materialistic factors which has determined the nature of Canadian history and will allow students in Canadian universities to study with some degree of fullness the development of the economic institutions of their native land.
