Navy In preparing this volume free use has been made of the collection of papers left by Commodore Macdonough, and now owned by the author. One of the most interesting of these is his autobiography, which covers the period from 1800, when he entered the navy, through 1822, and is published in full. The other papers consist of several hundred letters, orders, reports, etc., some of them personal, but most of them official. Among the signatures on these papers are those of Perry, Hull, Bainbridge, Porter, Chauncey, Stewart, Rodgers and other well known naval officers of that time. The official records in the Navy and the Treasury Departments at Washington naturally furnished much interesting and valuable information. Original documents have been consulted and used whenever practicable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The War of 1812 by : Donald R Hickey
Download or read book The War of 1812 written by Donald R Hickey and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-01-15 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive and authoritative history of the War of 1812, thoroughly revised for the 200th anniversary of the historic conflict, is a myth-shattering study that will inform and entertain students, historians, and general readers alike. Donald R. Hickey explores the military, diplomatic, and domestic history of our second war with Great Britain, bringing the study up to date with recent scholarship on all aspects of the war, from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada. The newly expanded The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict, Bicentennial Edition includes additional information on the British forces, American Indians, and military operations such as the importance of logistics and the use and capabilities of weaponry. Hickey explains how the war promoted American nationalism and manifest destiny, stimulated peacetime defense spending, and enhanced America's reputation abroad. He also shows that the war sparked bloody conflicts between pro-war Republican and anti-war Federalist neighbors, dealt a crippling blow to American Indians, and solidified the United States's antipathy toward the British. Book-of-the-Month Club and History Book Club selections and received one of the two 1990 "Best Book Awards" from the American Military Institute.
Book Synopsis Social Reform in the United States Navy, 1798-1862 by : Harold D Langley
Download or read book Social Reform in the United States Navy, 1798-1862 written by Harold D Langley and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2015-03-15 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades before the American Civil War various political, social, and religious groups agitated for reforms in American society that would be in keeping with its professed democratic and national principles. One such organization was the American Seaman’s Friend Society, which lobbied for improvements in the enlistment, discipline, and treatment of sailors in the Merchant Marine and the Navy. Their causes were embraced by some naval officers, members of Congress, and a few Secretaries of the Navy. This history explores the circumstances and people in and out of the Navy who eventually convinced Congress to enact reforms to improve the conditions of service of naval enlisted men and to lay the foundation for a career enlisted force.
Book Synopsis Coffins of the Brave by : Kevin J. Crisman
Download or read book Coffins of the Brave written by Kevin J. Crisman and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Coffins of the Brave: Lake Shipwrecks of the War of 1812, archaeologist Kevin J. Crisman and his fellow contributors examine sixteen different examples of 1812-era naval and commercial shipbuilding. They range from four small prewar vessels to four 16- or 20-gun brigs, three warships of much greater size, a steamboat hull converted into an armed schooner, two gunboats, and two postwar schooners. Despite their differing degrees of preservation and archaeological study, each vessel reveals something about how its creators sought the best balance of strength, durability, capacity, stability, speed, weatherliness, and seaworthiness for the anticipated naval struggle on the lakes along the US-Canadian border. The underwater archaeology reported here has guided a new approach to understanding the events of 1812–15, one that blends the evidence in contemporary documents and images with a wealth of details derived from objects lost, discarded, and otherwise left behind. This heavily illustrated volume balances scholarly findings with lively writing, interjecting the adventure of working on shipwrecks and archaeological finds into the investigation and interpretation of a war that continues to attract interest two centuries after it was fought.
