Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few letters have been so enthusiastically received & so widely diffused as those of the sixteenth-century Jesuit missionary & Saint, Francis Xavier. Written from India, the Indonesian archipelago, Japan, & the island of Sancian off the coast of China, these letters were copied, recopied, translated into Latin, German, French, & other languages, & frequently printed for wider circulation. They are filled with information on newly discovered lands & cultures, & they are filled with the missionary spirit, the zeal for the honor & glory of God, which animated the whole of Xavier's life & work. They constitute a religious classic & an historical resource heretofore unavailable in English. Francis Xavier was one of the first companions & followers of Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). In 1540, he set off as a missionary to southern Asia, where in the midst of ten years of ceaseless labor he produced the 138 letters & instructions that this book contains. The translator of this highly readable English version, M. Joseph Costelloe, S.J., is well known in scholarly circles for his masterful translation of the definitive four-volume biography, FRANCIS XAVIER, HIS LIFE, HIS TIMES by Georg Schurhammer, S.J., published by the Jesuit Historical Institute in Rome.
Download or read book Set All Afire written by Louis De Wohl and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-11-29 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint Francis Xavier's life is, in itself, a dramatic story. With humility and deep religious conviction, the famous Catholic novelist Louis de Wohl takes us into the mind and heart of this great missionary and saint who went by order of St. Ignatius of Loyola to "set all afire" in the Orient. Louis de Wohl captivates the reader as he follows Xavier's life from student days in Paris, through his meeting with Ignatius, his rather reluctant conversion, and his travels as one of the first Jesuits. The story takes the reader from Europe to Goa, India, Malaysia, Japan, and finally, to an island off the coast of China, where the exiled Xavier dies virtually alone. The book captures the dramatic struggles and inspiring zeal of this remarkable saint, giving at the same time an enthralling picture of the age in which he lived.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of her vocation we read: “Only those who have yearned to bring souls to Christ can understand the sentiments which filled Irma's heart during her four years of patient waiting. But the summons came at last. In 1839 Bishop de la Hailandiere of Vincennes, Indiana, an intimate friend of the family, who was in France, seeking aid for his mission, visited Irma's home. Here was the heaven-sent messenger. Never did a Desdemona listen to an Othello with half the eagerness with which Irma listened to the details which Bishop de la Hailandiere gave of those distant lands in America where so many souls were in darkness and in the shadow of death. Immediately after the visit, Irma wrote to a friend: 'We had a visit yesterday from Bishop de la Hailandiere, who spoke of his diocese and his great labors. Cecile wished to set out with him immediately. I did not say any thing, but I thought, "It is there perhaps that God calls me." Eugenie laughs and will not believe me; her gayety and her assurance make me heartsick. Poor dear sister how she will weep when I leave her.'”
Book Synopsis Saint Among Savages by : Francis Xavier Talbot
Download or read book Saint Among Savages written by Francis Xavier Talbot and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint among Savages tells the remarkable story of St. Isaac Jogues, a French Jesuit who was killed by Mohawks while serving as a missionary in New France. Coming from a upper middle class life in Orleans, he knew from an early age that he wanted to be a priest and serve abroad as a missionary to risk his life in order to save souls. Along with several others, collectively known as the North American Martyrs, he followed his dreams and met death in the American wilderness. Living with the Huron people in what is now Ontario, he was captured by Mohawk warriors and tortured and held captive for over a year. He escaped back to France with help from the Dutch in New York, and remarkably insisted on going back to New France, even though he knew what he might be facing. Besides Jogues' life there is also a lot of material about the lives and customs of the Native American peoples who lived along the St. Lawrence River.

His final assignment took him to post-Civil War New Orleans, where he continued to minister to others in need before falling himself to the yellow fever epidemic. Written in the first person and accompanied by excerpts from letters Blessed Seelos wrote to his family, confreres, and others, Fr.
