Book Synopsis Photographing the Mexican Revolution by : John Mraz
Download or read book Photographing the Mexican Revolution written by John Mraz and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2012-04-18 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mexican Revolution of 1910–1920 is among the world’s most visually documented revolutions. Coinciding with the birth of filmmaking and the increased mobility offered by the reflex camera, it received extraordinary coverage by photographers and cineastes—commercial and amateur, national and international. Many images of the Revolution remain iconic to this day—Francisco Villa galloping toward the camera; Villa lolling in the presidential chair next to Emiliano Zapata; and Zapata standing stolidly in charro raiment with a carbine in one hand and the other hand on a sword, to mention only a few. But the identities of those who created the thousands of extant images of the Mexican Revolution, and what their purposes were, remain a huge puzzle because photographers constantly plagiarized each other’s images. In this pathfinding book, acclaimed photography historian John Mraz carries out a monumental analysis of photographs produced during the Mexican Revolution, focusing primarily on those made by Mexicans, in order to discover who took the images and why, to what ends, with what intentions, and for whom. He explores how photographers expressed their commitments visually, what aesthetic strategies they employed, and which identifications and identities they forged. Mraz demonstrates that, contrary to the myth that Agustín Víctor Casasola was “the photographer of the Revolution,” there were many who covered the long civil war, including women. He shows that specific photographers can even be linked to the contending forces and reveals a pattern of commitment that has been little commented upon in previous studies (and completely unexplored in the photography of other revolutions).
Book Synopsis LIFE Guide to Digital Photography by : Joe McNally
Download or read book LIFE Guide to Digital Photography written by Joe McNally and published by Life. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photography has been the business and the passion of LIFE since the original weekly magazine's inception in 1936, and it continues to be the business and passion of LIFE Books and LIFE.com in the new millennium. But photography has surely changed during these many decades. The rigs and gear of old have given way-first slowly, then all at once-to sleek miracle machines that process pixels and have made the darkroom obsolete. The casual photog puts eye to lens, sets everything on auto and captures a photograph that is . . . perfectly fine. One of LIFE's master shooters-in fact, the final in the long line of distinguished LIFE staff photographers-was Joe McNally, and he has always believed that with a little preparation and care, with a dash of enthusiasm and daring added to the equation, anyone can make a better photo-anyone can turn a "keeper" into a treasure. This was true in days of yore, and it's true in the digital age. Your marvelous new camera, fresh from its box, can indeed perform splendid feats. Joe explains in this book how to take best advantage of what it was designed to do, and also when it is wise to outthink your camera or push your camera-to go for the gold, to create that indelible family memory that you will have blown up as large as the technology will allow, and that will hang on the wall forevermore. As the storied LIFE photographer and photo editor John Loengard points out in his eloquent foreword to this volume, there are cameras and there are cameras, and they've always been able to do tricks. And then there is photography. Other guides may give you the one, two, three of producing a reasonably well exposed shot, but Joe McNally and the editors of LIFE can give you that, and then can show you how to make a picture. In a detailed, friendly, conversational, anecdotal, sometimes rollicking way, that's what they do in these pages. Prepare to click.
Book Synopsis Digital Photography and Everyday Life by : Edgar Gómez Cruz
Download or read book Digital Photography and Everyday Life written by Edgar Gómez Cruz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital Photography and Everyday Life: Empirical studies on material visual practices explores the role that digital photography plays within everyday life. With contributors from ten different countries and backgrounds in a range of academic disciplines - including anthropology, media studies and visual culture - this collection takes a uniquely broad perspective on photography by situating the image-making process in wider discussions on the materiality and visuality of photographic practices and explores these through empirical case studies. By focusing on material visual practices, the book presents a comprehensive overview of some of the main challenges digital photography is bringing to everyday life. It explores how the digitization of photography has a wide-reaching impact on the use of the medium, as well as on the kinds of images that can be produced and the ways in which camera technology is developed. The exploration goes beyond mere images to think about cameras, mediations and technologies as key elements in the development of visual digital cultures. Digital Photography and Everyday Life will be of great interest to students and scholars of Photography, Contemporary Art, Visual Culture and Media Studies, as well as those studying Communication, Cultural Anthropology, and Science and Technology Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great LIFE Photographers is the most comprehensive anthology of LIFE photography ever published, featuring the best work of every staff photographer who worked for the famous magazine, and that of a handful of others who shot for LIFE. It was always the photographers who made LIFE great, and this is the most vivid and exciting portrait of those men and women that has ever been produced. The book offers more than 100 portfolios including those of Alfred Eisenstaedt, Margaret Bourke-White, Carl Mydans, Gordon Parks, W. Eugene Smith, Robert Capa, Ralph Morse, Nina Leen, Harry Benson, Philippe Halsman, and Joe McNally, whose work for LIFE in the aftermath of September 11 was in the finest tradition of the magazine. Each portfolio includes a short biography, offering an intimate look at the people behind the lens. Here are the defining moments of the 20th century, including MacArthur wading ashore by Mydans, Capa's D-Day landing at Omaha Beach and, of course, Eisenstaedt's sailor kissing the nurse. Here are the first pictures taken from inside the womb and the first taken from outer space. Here are powerful scenes from Tiananmen Square and from the American South during the Civil Rights movement. LIFE helped make icons of Sophia Loren and Marilyn Monroe, the Beatles and Michael Jackson, and those indelible photographs are here too. This attractive new paperback edition is an affordable way to own some of the most memorable photographs ever made, stunningly reproduced in black and white and full color.
Download or read book La Luz y la Vida written by Joe McNally and published by Peachpit Press. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. –Joe

Book Synopsis Ramón Gómez de la Serna by : Ricardo Fernández Romero
Download or read book Ramón Gómez de la Serna written by Ricardo Fernández Romero and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebrity in his own day, who gave lectures dressed as Napoleon or seated on the back of an elephant, Ramón Gómez de la Serna is the most representative writer of the interwar Spanish avant-garde. This book explores Gómez de la Serna's art and his quest to break down the barriers between literature and life, addressing two elements - already present in his work - of radical relevance in today's cultural debates: the relation of humans to the material world and the reduction of all experience to a singular individuality. Bringing Gómez de la Serna to an Anglophone audience, it reveals him to be the embodiment of a new kind of art on both sides of the Atlantic.

Book Synopsis Lucia Moholy (1894-1989) by : Lucia Moholy
Download or read book Lucia Moholy (1894-1989) written by Lucia Moholy and published by Silvana Editoriale. This book was released on 2012 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photographer, writer and intellectual, Lucia Moholy (born Lucia Schulz, Karolinenthal, Prague, 1894 - Zollikon, Zurich, 1989) is a central figure in the 20th century history of photography, although the fame of her husband, the renowned artist László Moholy-Nagy, overshadowed her work for a long time. Through her photographs, an example of the German avant-garde and of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), it is possible to understand the complexity of her artistic personality and to reconstruct the role she played in the cultural history of the past century. Her major photographic work is on the Bauhaus: pictures of the school, of teachers, objects and furniture are considered as true icons of modern times. The essays published in this volume allow us to understand and outline Lucia Moholy's complex artistic personality, thus giving her the correct place she is due in 20th century culture. 0Exhibition: Museo MAX, Chiasso, Italy (24.11.2012-31.1.2013).
