Linda Wallheim, increasingly disillusioned with her Mormon religion, has begun marriage counseling with her husband, Kurt, a bishop in the Latter-Day Saints Church. On other days, Linda occupies herself with happier things, like visiting her five grown sons and their families. When Linda’s eldest son, Joseph, tells her his infant daughter’s babysitter, a local teenager named Sabrina Jensen, has vanished, Linda can’t help but ask questions. Her casual inquiries form the portrait of a girl under extreme pressure from her parents to be the perfect Mormon daughter, and it eventually emerges that Sabrina is the victim of a terrible crime at the hands of her own classmates—including the high school’s golden boys and future church leaders. Linda’s search for Sabrina will lead her to the darker streets of Utah and cause her to question whether the Mormon community’s most privileged and powerful will be called to task for past sins.

Book excerpt: When a stranger dies, secrets come to life ... When she was still in high school, Sonje McCrae left this small Minnesota town, changed her name, and never came back-until now. Less than twenty-four hours after her return, Utah O'Brien finds the woman's body under six inches of new snow. The sheriff calls it death by misadventure-a fancy way of saying it's not his problem. Utah thinks the sheriff is wrong. For the sake of the two children Sonje left behind, she's compelled to find out what really happened. As she and her friends dig into the unlikely details of the woman's life and death, they uncover some of the town's most closely guarded secrets-and the most shocking secret of all involves Utah's own family. Now that she knows, her life will never be the same-but does this discovery have anything to do with the death of Sonje McCrae? You'll like this book if you enjoy character-driven mysteries that include dogs who take an active, realistic role in the plot. It's filled with likable small-town characters and plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. "This is the second book in the Utah O'Brien murder Minnesota Mysteries series."

The story of Everett Ruess, who set out into the desert with two burros in 1934 and disappeared into the wilderness of Southern Utah, has for decades been one of the most intriguing mysteries of western lore. A Californian off on an adventure at the age of twenty, he loved poetry, nature, art, and beauty. His family had tracked his wanderings for four years as he explored Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico—and then Everett disappeared without a trace. Then, in 2008, an old Navajo Indian came forward with information that he had witnessed a murder in 1934, probably that of young Ruess. In addition to extensive letters by Ruess himself providing an insight into his mind and heart, this book tells how the bones were recovered and multiple DNA tests were done amid much suspense and speculation, and how a family was affected by the ultimate results. Includes a new epilogue

Book excerpt: In the predominantly mormon city of Draper, Utah, some seemingly perfect families have deadly secrets. Linda Wallheim is a devout Mormon, mother of five boys and wife of a bishop. But Linda’s daily routine of church-going, Relief Society meetings, and visiting church ward members is turned upside down as a disturbing situation takes shape in her seemingly idyllic neighborhood. Young wife and mother Carrie Helm has disappeared. Carrie’s husband, Jared, claims that she has abandoned the family, but Linda doesn’t trust him. As she snoops, trying to learn more about the Helms’ circumstances, Linda becomes convinced Jared murdered his wife and painted himself as a wronged husband. Inspired by a chilling true crime and written by a practicing Mormon, The Bishop’s Wife is both a fascinating peek into the lives of modern Mormons and a grim and cunningly twisted mystery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1832 Joseph Smith, Jr., the Mormons’ first prophet, foretold of a great war beginning in South Carolina. In the combatants’ mutual destruction, God’s purposes would be served, and Mormon men would rise to form a geographical, political, and theocratic “Kingdom of God” to encompass the earth. Three decades later, when Smith’s prophecy failed with the end of the American Civil War, the United States left torn but intact, the Mormons’ perspective on the conflict—and their inactivity in it—required palliative revision. In The Civil War Years in Utah, the first full account of the events that occurred in Utah Territory during the Civil War, John Gary Maxwell contradicts the patriotic mythology of Mormon leaders’ version of this dark chapter in Utah history. While the Civil War spread death, tragedy, and sorrow across the continent, Utah Territory remained virtually untouched. Although the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—and its faithful—proudly praise the service of an 1862 Mormon cavalry company during the Civil War, Maxwell’s research exposes the relatively inconsequential contribution of these Nauvoo Legion soldiers. Active for a mere ninety days, they patrolled overland trails and telegraph lines. Furthermore, Maxwell finds indisputable evidence of Southern allegiance among Mormon leaders, despite their claim of staunch, long-standing loyalty to the Union. Men at the highest levels of Mormon hierarchy were in close personal contact with Confederate operatives. In seeking sovereignty, Maxwell contends, the Saints engaged in blatant and treasonous conflict with Union authorities, the California and Nevada Volunteers, and federal policies, repeatedly skirting open warfare with the U.S. government. Collective memory of this consequential period in American history, Maxwell argues, has been ill-served by a one-sided perspective. This engaging and long-overdue reappraisal finally fills in the gaps, telling the full story of the Civil War years in Utah Territory.
