Book excerpt: With over 200 spectacular images, including astonishing satellite photographs and stills from the PBS docuseries, Life from Above reveals our planet as you've never seen it before. Thanks to advanced satellite images, we can now see the earth's surface, its megastructures, weather patterns, and natural wonders in breathtaking detail. From the colors and patterns that make up our planet to the mass migrations and seismic changes that shape it, Life from Above sheds new light on the place we call home. It reveals the intimate stories behind the images, following herds of elephants crossing the plains of Africa and turtles traveling on ocean currents that are invisible unless seen from space. The true colors of our planet are revealed, from the striped tulip fields of Holland to the vivid turquoise lakes in Iceland to the green swirl of a plankton super bloom attracting a marine feeding frenzy. Whether it's the world's largest beaver dam--so remote it was discovered only through satellite imagery--or newly formed islands born from volcanic eruptions, you'll discover new perspectives with every image.
Download or read book Life's Edge written by Carl Zimmer and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FINALIST FOR THE PEN/E.O. WILSON LITERARY SCIENCE WRITING AWARD***A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2021***A SCIENCE NEWS FAVORITE BOOK OF 2021***A SMITHSONIAN TOP TEN SCIENCE BOOK OF 2021 “Stories that both dazzle and edify… This book is not just about life, but about discovery itself.” —Siddhartha Mukherjee, New York Times Book Review We all assume we know what life is, but the more scientists learn about the living world—from protocells to brains, from zygotes to pandemic viruses—the harder they find it is to locate life’s edge. Carl Zimmer investigates one of the biggest questions of all: What is life? The answer seems obvious until you try to seriously answer it. Is the apple sitting on your kitchen counter alive, or is only the apple tree it came from deserving of the word? If we can’t answer that question here on earth, how will we know when and if we discover alien life on other worlds? The question hangs over some of society’s most charged conflicts—whether a fertilized egg is a living person, for example, and when we ought to declare a person legally dead. Life's Edge is an utterly fascinating investigation that no one but one of the most celebrated science writers of our generation could craft. Zimmer journeys through the strange experiments that have attempted to re-create life. Literally hundreds of definitions of what that should look like now exist, but none has yet emerged as an obvious winner. Lists of what living things have in common do not add up to a theory of life. It's never clear why some items on the list are essential and others not. Coronaviruses have altered the course of history, and yet many scientists maintain they are not alive. Chemists are creating droplets that can swarm, sense their environment, and multiply. Have they made life in the lab? Whether he is handling pythons in Alabama or searching for hibernating bats in the Adirondacks, Zimmer revels in astounding examples of life at its most bizarre. He tries his own hand at evolving life in a test tube with unnerving results. Charting the obsession with Dr. Frankenstein's monster and how the world briefly believed radium was the source of all life, Zimmer leads us all the way into the labs and minds of researchers engineering life from scratch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe R. Eagleman, Ph.D. tells in this autobiography about the many facets of his life. His early education was in a one-room rural grade school. His invention of an artificial tornado that extended from the ceiling of his laboratory at the University of Kansas resulted in local interest as well as international filming from a news crew from Japan. It later became the subject of a lawsuit between Universal Studios in Hollywood and the Volvo Company. After he was told by Universal Studios to "Name your price" he became involved in this successful lawsuit. A 50 foot version of his tornado was the main attraction in the Twister Building at Universal Studios Park in Orlando Florida from 1998 to 2015. Another copy of his tornado was created with his help by Ned Kahn at the Exploratorium in San Francisco where it continues to attract viewers and has for many decades. This autobiography tells of his early life on the farm as one of 12 children who was told by an older brother that he would never amount to anything. He tells of experiences in the one room rural grade school and of dealing with a bully on the playground. It includes his development as a scientist, artist, musician, luthier, marksman, taxidermist and other endeavors. His unique journey to becoming a Professor and Research Scientist is described. His career resulted in one who had experiments on Skylab and who influenced many thousands of students through his teaching and books and who made national changes to tornado safety guidelines. He initiated and developed the program in Atmospheric Science at KU that has now grown into a full department where Joe Eagleman Scholarships are given to worthy students.

Book Synopsis Blessings beyond the Binary by : Nora Rubel
Download or read book Blessings beyond the Binary written by Nora Rubel and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-13 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transparent made history as the first television show to feature a transgender character in the main role, as the first streaming series to win the Golden Globe for Best Television Series, and as, in the words of journalist Debra Nussbaum Cohen, “the Jewiest show ever.” No television show in history has depicted the lives of American Jews with as much attention to Jewish rituals, quirks, or culture. And no series has portrayed issues of gender and sexuality alongside Judaism with such nuance and depth, making Transparent a landmark series in the history of television. Blessings beyond the Binary brings together leading scholars to analyze and offer commentary on what scholar Josh Lambert calls “the most important work of Jewish culture of the century so far.” The book explores the show’s depiction of Jewish life, religion, and history, as well as Transparent’s scandals and criticisms and how it fits into and diverges from today’s transgender and queer politics. The first book to focus on Transparent, Blessings beyond the Binary offers a rich analysis of the groundbreaking series and its connections to contemporary queer, trans, and Jewish life.
