Book excerpt: By the time he died of cancer in 1970, after one season in Washington during which he transformed the Redskins into winners, Lombardi had become a mythic character who transcended sport, and his legend has only grown in the decades since. Many now turn to Lombardi in search of characteristics that they fear have been irretrievably lost, the oldfashioned virtues of discipline, obedience, loyalty, character, and teamwork. To others he symbolizes something less romantic: modern society's obsession with winning and superficial success. In When Pride Still Mattered, Maraniss renders Lombardi as flawed and driven yet ultimately misunderstood, a heroic figure who was more complex and authentic than the stereotypical images of him propounded by admirers and critics.

Book excerpt: Introducing the Edward Carnell Library (Nine Titles Listed Inside) The Kingdom of Love and the Pride of Life is indeed about love. Carnell evidences deep insight into what love is and what it is not. He richly develops Jesus's statement, "Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." He affirms that happy children have intuitive knowledge of the nature of love, which is kindness and truth. They have a God-given ability to see through hypocrisy and recognize the good person. This book is an invaluable exposition of the biblical doctrine of love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Lion's Pride, Edward J. Renehan, Jr. vividly portrays the grand idealism, heroic bravery, and reckless abandon that Theodore Roosevelt both embodied and bequeathed to his children and the tragic fulfillment of that legacy on the battlefields of World War I. Drawing upon a wealth of previously unavailable materials, including letters and unpublished memoirs, The Lion's Pride takes us inside what is surely the most extraordinary family ever to occupy the White House. Theodore Roosevelt believed deeply that those who had been blessed with wealth, influence, and education were duty bound to lead, even--perhaps especially--if it meant risking their lives to preserve the ideals of democratic civilization. Teddy put his principles, and his life, to the test in the Spanish American war, and raised his children to believe they could do no less. When America finally entered the "European conflict" in 1917, all four of his sons eagerly enlisted and used their influence not to avoid the front lines but to get there as quickly as possible. Their heroism in France and the Middle East matched their father's at San Juan Hill. All performed with selfless--some said heedless--courage: Two of the boys, Archie and Ted, Jr., were seriously wounded, and Quentin, the youngest, was killed in a dogfight with seven German planes. Thus, the war that Teddy had lobbied for so furiously brought home a grief that broke his heart. He was buried a few months after his youngest child. Filled with the voices of the entire Roosevelt family, The Lion's Pride gives us the most intimate and moving portrait ever published of the fierce bond between Teddy Roosevelt and his remarkable children.

Book excerpt: Since the Garden of Eden sin has ravaged people's lives, leaving behind a plethora of troubling problems such as anxieties, fears, insecurities, confusion, unbelief, bitterness, sexual hang-ups, and even addictions. Most people look for answers in all the wrong places. They ought to look within. They ought to look at i. i is the "self-life." i is the core of the fallen human nature. i is the realm where sin grows and flourishes. i: the root of sin exposed unravels the mystery of the corrupted human nature, and convincingly proves that all of man's struggles with sin can be traced to the pride-driven "self-life" that emerges from it. Rather than relying on trendy quick-fixes, this book digs deeply into the treasures of Scripture to provide struggling believers everything they need to deal with their problems at the root level: the inescapable, ever-present i.

The family moved California in 1945, and she spent her youth in Fresno. She was inducted into the army on November 22, 1954—the same date, she later learned, that Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on the city bus in Montgomery, Alabama, to a white man. Following a successful twenty-year career in the military, she launched a thriving career in real estate, building a life well lived and a legacy worth sharing. Book excerpt: In 1905, Upton Sinclair published his muckraking classic, The Jungle, and shocked the nation with his account of the environmental and human costs of operating Chicago's sprawling Union Stock Yards. His description of the nearby neighborbood where workers lived, often in deplorable conditions, made the "Back of the Yards" one of the most famous - and infamous - urban enclaves in the country. Pride in the Jungle picks up the story of the Back of the Yards about a decade after Sinclair's memorable account. By that time many neighborhood families were on the verge of generational change as the original migrants from Poland, Slovakia, Lithuania, and other parts of Europe surrendered authority over the family to their Americanized children. The neighborhood, too, was changing - from Sinclair's terrible urban slum to a stable, working-class community with a strong sense of pride. Focusing on the period between the world wars, Jablonsky describes the emergence of a distinctive sense of community as ethnicity, religion, family traditions, and an accommodation to the "American way of life" combined to create a "pride in the jungle". Jablonsky also explains how the Back of the Yards community was shaped by the residents' sense of place, by their unique experience of the cultural and the physical landscapes. He describes the grass-roots formation of the widely acclaimed Neighborhood Council as the culmination of "socio-spacial processes" unfolding in the everyday lives of ordinary people. Based on archival sources, published scholarship, and eighty-four oral histories, Jablonsky's lively account establishes why place and space mattered in the era of pedestrians and streetcars - and why they canstill matter in America's troubled, yet vibrant, urban centers.
