Book Synopsis Life and Cases by : Frederick Alexander Mann
Download or read book Life and Cases written by Frederick Alexander Mann and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2021-08-09 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life and Cases – an (unfinished) autobiography of F. A. Mann, who arrived in London as a German-Jewish émigré, forced to leave Germany on the cusp of a promising career in German academia. He retrained as an English solicitor to become one of the leading lawyers of his time. From the introduction of Mann's autobiography:"I write [an autobiography], because I am persuaded that it is my duty to tell the story of a world that has disappeared, but should not be forgotten, – the story of a highly cultured German Jewish bourgeois milieu which perished in Auschwitz, though my nearest and dearest succeeded in escaping. The history of the rise and fall of that social class merits to be preserved, but stands in danger of falling into oblivion on account of the lack of specific material, – no great novel describing its drama and tragedy has yet been written."

Book Synopsis Family Stories and the Life Course by : Michael W. Pratt
Download or read book Family Stories and the Life Course written by Michael W. Pratt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-04-26 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book draws from work that focuses on the act of telling family stories, as well as their content and structure. The process of telling family stories is linked to central aspects of development, including language acquisition, affect regulation, and family interaction patterns. This book extends across traditional developmental psychology, personality theory, and family studies. Drawing broadly on the epigenetic framework for individual development articulated by Erik Erikson, as well as on conceptions of the family life cycle, the editors bring together contemporary examples of psychological research on family stories and their implications for development and change at different points in the life course. The book is divided into sections that focus on family stories at different points in the life cycle, from early childhood and the beginnings of narrative skill, through adolescence, young adulthood, midlife, and then mature adulthood and its intergenerational meaning. During each of these periods of the life cycle, research focusing on individual development within an Eriksonian framework of ego strengths and virtues is highlighted. The dynamic role of family stories is also featured here, with work exploring the links between family process, intergenerational attachment, and storytelling. Sociocultural theories that emphasize how such development is situated in the wider cultural context are also featured in several chapters. This broad lifespan developmental focus serves to integrate the exciting diversity of this work and foster further questions and research in the emerging field of family narrative. The book is intended primarily for researchers and advanced-level students in the fields of developmental and personality psychology, as well as those in family studies and in gerontology. It may also be of interest to those in the helping professions who are concerned with family therapy and family issues, and may--due to its content and illustrative material--have appeal to a wider market of the lay public. The chapters are written in a readily accessible style and the analyses are presented in a fairly non-technical way. Because family stories are charted across the lifespan, it would be a suitable companion book to a more traditional lifespan textbook in certain courses.

Download or read book Unmasked written by PAUL. HOLES and published by Wildfire. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the detective who helped catch the Golden State Killer, a memoir about investigating America's toughest cold cases, and the rewards - and toll - of a life spent solving crime. For a decade, from 1973, The Golden State Killer stalked and murdered Californians in the dead of night, leaving entire communities afraid to turn off the lights. Then he vanished, and the case remained unsolved. In 1994, when cold-case investigator Paul Holes came across the old file, he swore he would unmask GSK and finally give these families closure. Twenty-four years later, Holes fulfilled that promise, identifying 73-year-old Joseph J. DeAngelo. Headlines blasted around the world: one of America's most prolific serial killers had been caught. That case launched Paul's career into the stratosphere, turning him into an icon in the true-crime world. But while many know the story of the capture of GSK, until now, no one has truly known the man behind it all.In UNMASKED, Paul takes us through his memories of a storied career and provides an insider account of some of the most notorious cases in contemporary American history, including Laci Peterson's murder and Jaycee Dugard's kidnapping. But this is also a revelatory profile of a complex man and what makes him tick: the drive to find closure for victims and their loved ones; the inability to walk away from a challenge - even at the expense of his own happiness. This is a story about the gritty truth of crime solving when there are no 'case closed' headlines. It is the story of a man and his commitment to his cases, and to the people who might have otherwise been forgotten.
