Book excerpt: "WHO is not familiar with the history of the Old Dominion f " remarked a portly-appearing gentleman, seated at his ease in the portico of the United States Hotel, at Washington, some years since. " And where is her equal, sir, in all that's good and chivalrous ? " he added, with the view of engaging the attention of a member of Congress, who just then took a seat by his side. " Ah, Mr. Erskine," replied the person addressed, " I find you ' still harping on my daughter.' Her history is good so far as it goes; but it does not go far enough. It is the unwritten pages which we of the North take exceptions to."

Book excerpt: “Fascinating . . . a lively and perceptive cultural history.” —Annette Gordon-Reed, The New Yorker In this wide-ranging, brilliantly researched work, David S. Reynolds traces the factors that made Uncle Tom’s Cabin the most influential novel ever written by an American. Upon its 1852 publication, the novel’s vivid depiction of slavery polarized its American readership, ultimately widening the rift that led to the Civil War. Reynolds also charts the novel’s afterlife—including its adaptation into plays, films, and consumer goods—revealing its lasting impact on American entertainment, advertising, and race relations.
Book Synopsis The Life of Josiah Henson: Formerly a Slave by : Josiah Henson
Download or read book The Life of Josiah Henson: Formerly a Slave written by Josiah Henson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-02-19 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Josiah Henson (June 15, 1789 - May 5, 1883) was an author, abolitionist, and minister. Born into slavery in Charles County, Maryland, he escaped to Upper Canada (now Ontario) in 1830, and founded a settlement and laborer's school for other fugitive slaves at Dawn, near Dresden in Kent County. Henson's autobiography, The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, as Narrated by Himself (1849), is widely believed to have inspired the character of the fugitive slave, George Harris, in Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852).
