Book excerpt: An international bestseller, now available in this twentieth-anniversary revised edition, Rise the Euphrates reaches back to 1915, when nine-year-old Casard witnesses the massacre of her family during the Armenian genocide. Casard emigrates to America to put the unspeakable past behind her; yet as the years pass and her only daughter, Araxie, marries outside the clan, making her husband and their children odar-outsiders-the rift between mother and daughter threatens once again to tear the family apart. It falls to Seta, the novel's lyrical narrator and Casard's granddaughter, to alter her family's legacy. "The daughter assumes what is unfinished in her mother's life," Seta learns. Caught between the generations, and between the American and Armenian cultures in her Connecticut town, Seta confronts the fiercest division: the one within herself. The wisdom she gains frees the next generation in Carol Edgarian's stunningly original and groundbreaking novel. PRAISE FOR RISE THE EUPHRATES "This is a book whose generosity of spirit, intelligence, humanity and finally ambition are what literature ought to be and rarely is today - daring, heartbreaking and affirmative, giving order and sense to our random lives." -Washington Post Book World "Edgarian's sumptuous writing and uncommon wisdom about the human spirit and its maiming seep into a reader's heart, refusing to leave. This is a stunning debut, a book that will doubtless haunt its readers as it beguiles them." -The Miami Herald ..".Vivid, chilling...RISE THE EUPHRATES' richly drawn characters and the haunted voice of the narrator will long remain in readers' memories." -ROBERT STONE "How often do you get to read a book that captures you so entirely and deeply that it controls your days, measures them out and defines them by how long it will be before you can get to your next night's reading? RISE THE EUPHRATES is on of these rare treasures: a work of power, grace, beauty and exquisite tenderness. This book goes beyond the reading experience; it reminds you of your own hopes and terrors. RISE THE EUPHRATES will live for a long, long time in the manner of Wallace Stegner's "Angle of Repose" and Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird." -Rick Bass "A novel of extraordinary compassion, it's also a dead-on view of assimilation and the American experience." -Phoenix Gazette "The writing is so good it can raise the hairs on your neck." -Elizabeth Berg, Mademoiselle "To the list of well-wrought generational sagas-John Steinbeck's East of Eden, Alex Haley's Roots, and Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club-add [Carol Edgarian's] powerful first novel, RISE THE EUPHRATES." -Seattle Post-Intelligencer "Few first novels are as deeply felt, yet so clearly communicative, as this one. It touches universals while powerfully evoking the everyday world in which we cope within our families with past, present and future. . . . Edgarian's novel has literary award written on every page." -The San Diego Union-Tribune "RISE THE EUPHRATES is an important, powerful, poignant novel. . . . Carol Edgarian's prodigious talents as a storyteller, her ability to account what there was and was not for these Armenian Americans, should not be missed." -Don Lee, Ploughshares "RISE THE EUPHRATES packs an emotional wallop." -Elle "Where is Armenia today? . . . One could almost say that Armenia persists in Carol Edgarian's prose." -New York Times Book Review "A beautiful and generous book." -Chicago Tribune "One of the summer's Best Reads!" -Vogue

Book excerpt: A sweeping, richly compassionate novel about marriage, ambition, and the reclaiming of love—by the bestselling novelist and co-founder of Narrative magazine. Many love stories end in marriage; rare is the love story that begins with one— already promised, already worn. Set in San Francisco during the first year of Obama’s presidency, Three Stages of Amazement deftly charts the struggles and triumphs of Lena Rusch and her husband Charlie Pepper, who still believe they can have it all—sex, love, marriage, children, career, brilliance. But life delivers surprises and tests—a stillborn child, an economic crash, a ruthless business rival, and the attentions of an old lover. Touched by tragedy and by ordinary hopes unmet, Lena and Charlie must face, for the first time in their lives, real limitation. Fifteen years after her stunning debut, Rise the Euphrates, Carol Edgarian has created a panoramic and deeply moving story about business and family and the demands of love in our time. Three Stages of Amazement takes readers on a spellbinding journey inside America today, with an unforgettable cast of characters including Cal Rusch, Lena’s uncle, a Silicon Valley titan, and Ivy, his socialite wife, who engender complication in the lives of all the people they touch: their grown children, business partners, friends, the servants and workers upon whom their glamorous life depends—and Lena, whose quest for grace is the pulse of this gorgeous novel. As Lena and Charlie, Ivy and Cal face the temptations of their youth and the fantasy of starting over, they discover that real life is the ultimate challenge. Told with eloquence, wit, and compassion, Three Stages of Amazement is a true thriller of the heart, a riveting story about confronting adversity, gaining wisdom, and finding great love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second book of the Unveiling Series, Unveiling Three Parts of Babylon, by Dr. William C. Taggart III, offers a biblical study based on Revelation 16:19 where the kingdom of Satan, portrayed as the great city Babylon, falls into three parts. The author noted that in Revelation 18:4, the saints are urged to leave Babylon to avoid her plagues, Jeremiah 51: 35, 49. That the Satanic kingdom is portrayed biblically in three parts in Revelation 16:19, makes it imperative that the saints have a biblical understanding of those three parts to exit the Satanic kingdom completely. A correct biblical understanding of the three parts of Babylon is essential to the fleeing saints as they seek to escape the Satanic influences in all its forms. Unveiling Three Parts of Babylon continues the Unveiling Series by further biblically developing the three parts of Babylon which initially was presented by the author’s doctoral dissertation through corrections made and additional analysis. This second book not only exposes more fully the kingdom of Satan but encourages the successful exit of all humanity from the Babylonian entanglements of all three parts, Revelation 18:4.

Book excerpt: Nira Stone (1938-2013) was a scholar of Armenian and Byzantine Art. Her broad and close acquaintance with the field of Armenian art history covered many fields of Armenian artistic creativity. Nira Stone made notable contributions to the study of Armenian manuscript painting, mosaics, and other forms of artistic expression. Of particular interests are her researches on this art in its historical and religious contexts, such as the study of apocryphal elements in Armenian Gospel iconography, the place of the mosaics of Jerusalem in the context of mosaics in Byzantine Palestine, and of the interplay between religious movements, such as hesychasm, and Armenian manuscript painting.

Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work that sets apart fact and legend, authors Finkelstein and Silberman use significant archeological discoveries to provide historical information about biblical Israel and its neighbors. In this iconoclastic and provocative work, leading scholars Israel Finkelstein and Neil Asher Silberman draw on recent archaeological research to present a dramatically revised portrait of ancient Israel and its neighbors. They argue that crucial evidence (or a telling lack of evidence) at digs in Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon suggests that many of the most famous stories in the Bible—the wanderings of the patriarchs, the Exodus from Egypt, Joshua’s conquest of Canaan, and David and Solomon’s vast empire—reflect the world of the later authors rather than actual historical facts. Challenging the fundamentalist readings of the scriptures and marshaling the latest archaeological evidence to support its new vision of ancient Israel, The Bible Unearthed offers a fascinating and controversial perspective on when and why the Bible was written and why it possesses such great spiritual and emotional power today.

Book excerpt: The study of the Second Sophistic is a relative newcomer to the Anglophone field of classics, and much of what characterizes it temporally and culturally remains a matter of legitimate contestation. This Handbook offers a diversity of scholarly voices that attempt to define the state of this developing field. Included are chapters that offer practical guidance on the wide range of valuable textual materials that survive, many of which are useful or even core to inquiries of particularly current interest (e.g., gender studies, cultural history of the body, sociology of literary culture, history of education and intellectualism, history of religion, political theory, history of medicine, cultural linguistics, intersection of the classical traditions and early Christianity).

Book excerpt: "The Life/Death Rhythms of Ancient Empires" outlines the flow of history from 3000BC to 1400AD to identify the factors that make up dominant, just, prosperous civilisations that can be described as golden cultures. These factors were found to have common features and the cultures themselves could be described in cyclical terms. This meant that the rise and fall of future dominant cultures could be roughly forecast to some degree in terms of hundreds of years. The evolution of capitalism was made possible, during and after actual warfare, by ancient priests and bankers, assisted by the invention of coinage. Capitalism was practised in the ancient world, supported at times by warfare and religion. It was vanquished for centuries by powerful weapons called irresponsible debt, and debasement of currency. The global capitalism of the twenty-first century is dependent on debt and a debased US dollar. A review of ancient history provides the basis for a glimpse into the future. This century's global temperature increase, which so excites environmentalists, can be shown to be part of a thousand year climate cycle. There well might be a human element to global warming but this just exacerbates the centuries' long cyclical pattern. Research has shown that periods of hot-dry and cold-dry climate have effects on human behaviour. Extrapolation of cycles enables forecasts of human behaviour to be made well into the new millennium. Dominant prosperous societies have occurred at roughly 200 year intervals which can suggest time-lines for societies in the present and the future A relatively irreverent history of ancient cultures, war, religion, money and debt produces cyclical analysis enabling a forecast that the USA might lose world dominance in 2040. The next volume "Life/Death Rhythms from the Capitalist Renaissance" will include economic data that will allow refined cyclical forecasts.
