Book excerpt: An in-depth look at the danger of diving the Andrea Doria, the "Everest" of deep-sea diving, by an award-winning journalist and photographer. On a foggy July evening in 1956, the Italian cruise liner Andrea Doria, bound for New York, was struck broadside by another vessel. In eleven hours, she would sink nearly 250 feet to the murky Atlantic Ocean floor. Thanks to a daring rescue operation, only fifty-one of more than 1,700 people died in the tragedy. But the Andrea Doria is still taking lives. Considered the Mount Everest of diving, the Andrea Doria is the ultimate deepwater wreck challenge. Over the years, a small but fanatical group of extreme scuba divers have investigated the Andrea Doria, pushing themselves to the very limits of human endurance to explore her—and not all have returned. Diver Kevin McMurray takes you inside this elite club with a hard, honest look at those who go deeper, farther, and closer to the edge than others would ever dream. Deep Descent is the riveting true story of the human spirit overcoming human frailty and of fearsome, mortal risks traded for a hard-core adrenaline rush. Chronicling these adventures in his page-turning narrative and in dozens of dramatic photos, McMurray draws us deeper into the cold heart of the unforgiving sea, giving us a powerful vision of a place to which few will ever have the skills—or the courage—to go.

Book excerpt: All quiet in our Phoenix retreat. Full moon aglow. Ol' August moon. That harvest moon that hovers low in the night sky while rising warm rays from Mother Earth make its face close, golden, and so bright you could read the fine print on a used car sales contract. Those were the days when pollutant-free skies allowed my friend the moon to drape its warm blush over all that exists. A hot night. No different from any other Arizona August evening. Naked lovers slipped quietly into the tepid water of our backyard retreat swirling around in liquid weightlessness. Silence everywhere except for wavelets cracking on tense water while the monsoon heat sucked up all that was left of ambient noise. Water and air became one to our skin. Welcome, new world. She floated above my fingertips as I sang my quiet song. My bride's breasts lay bare, excited by the soothing freedom, begging for an intoxicating caress. We knew trust the good stuff on the top shelf that makes love strong. And lasting. Gentle love. Deep gentle love that awakens the senses and casts the toils of the earth far, far away. We sat motionless. And wordless. And thoughtless. Our moon watched as the water glowed, singing a siren's song. I took a breath, sank into the world below, and pushed myself deeper suspended without limit - feeling it soothe and setting me free. Holding my breath was effortless. The calming effect of love made air neither wanted nor needed. I want to stay here, but the arms of Mother Earth reached for me. Upon my return, I sensed something different. The silence of the world became spoiled by noise not there moments ago. Where had I gone? How long was I there? Nothing would ever be the same again. Nothing. My love, my mate on this great voyage where is she? She vanished without a word. Taken by the demons. But soon to swim forever at peace in Tilloo. I find myself on a path not of my choosing. How did I get here? * * * * * * When I grow old my world will shrink as time races ever faster. The museum of my life will no longer be mine, but leftovers found in our nation's thrift shops. They may send me to a room cast far out of the way where the reflection from the window obscures my face as I stare vacantly at my purposelessness. I fear dying knowing my life had no value and I made little difference. The adventures of my yesterdays will have become a faded memory. Who would believe the tangled tales in my wild gray hair and tired eyes? Who cares who I was? Without a yesterday, can who I am ever be known? Rogue Wave in the Sea When Mother Nature exercises her muscle, she sometimes gives no advance warning. I've seen pictures of this phenomenon. Rogue waves, they call them. They're the sea scoundrels that come out of nowhere as they defy wind, current, or any predictable weather pattern. They move quickly with the stealth of a ruthless predator. They are a lone large wave hiding behind the darkness of night or at the backs of unsuspecting sea captains. They ambush from whichever direction eyes are not turned. They are the sea monsters on the surface that mercilessly wash astern and devour boats with the speed of moments. Their name almost implies cunning intelligence. I saw pictures of them and shivered at the thought of one coming at me. Now I was looking at one square in the face. We scurried to the top deck to study our predicament. We could see the ends of the wave. How odd it seemed it was heading straight for us. It was an angry wave. It seemed to be anxious to eat greedily. It was a fully flowing cresting wave. White caps leaping behind the wave would be the first to slam us under. The captain bellowed orders to shut all hatches and prepare ourselves for the plunge. If we kept a bow into it, the wave would pass quickly without harm. But the edges seem

Book excerpt: A rivetingly imagined re-telling of the voyages of Frances Barkley (1769-1845), who as a young woman travelled the world on a trading mission with her sea captain husband. Over two hundred years ago, Frances Barkley, a seventeen-year-old girl fresh out of a convent school in France, met twenty-six-year-old sea captain, fell deeply in love, and married him after a six-week courtship. Five weeks later, she stepped aboard his ship, the Imperial Eagle, to set sail on an eight-year voyage that would take them around the world twice. Frances Barkley's story is a remarkable one. It is a story born of discovery, of firsts, of hardship, of disease, of illness, and of death. Relying on her strength of character and wit, this young woman survived fierce seas, shipwreck, and capture by pirates. When Frances was approaching her seventh decade, at the behest of her daughter, she put pen to paper and wrote down what she could remember of her life with her husband in the merchant sea trade. Frances Barkley: Eighteenth-century Seafarer is not simply a re-issue of Frances's own reminiscences, but a work of creative non-fiction--an extensive reimagining of her time at sea, supplemented through extensive historical, geographic, and nautical research.

Book excerpt: After moving from small-town USA to Hawaii at the tender age of 14, SCUBA diving introduced Tony to a fascinating new world of thrills and adventure that would shape the course of his life forever. He never let the fact that he was the only black kid involved deter him in his quest to explore the underwater world. This autobiography describes the exciting, true, and oftentimes humorous story of how he overcame being the product of a broken family, stereotyping, numerous challenges, several close calls, and countless other eye-opening events to become the only black American commercial deep sea diver to work in the demanding offshore oilfields in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa in the a80s and a90s, where, at the slightest mistake, the rich oil companies were ready to send a diver packing his bags and heading back to shore, never to be hired again.

Book excerpt: From one of the world's most renowned cave divers, a firsthand account of exploring the earth's final frontier: the hidden depths of our oceans and the sunken caves inside our planet More people have died exploring underwater caves than climbing Mount Everest, and we know more about deep space than we do about the depths of our oceans. From one of the top cave divers working today--and one of the very few women in her field--Into the Planet blends science, adventure, and memoir to bring readers face-to-face with the terror and beauty of earth's remaining unknowns and the extremes of human capability. Jill Heinerth--the first person in history to dive deep into an Antarctic iceberg and leader of a team that discovered the ancient watery remains of Mayan civilizations--has descended farther into the inner depths of our planet than any other woman. She takes us into the harrowing split-second decisions that determine whether a diver makes it back to safety, the prejudices that prevent women from pursuing careers underwater, and her endeavor to recover a fallen friend's body from the confines of a cave. But there's beauty beyond the danger of diving, and while Heinerth swims beneath our feet in the lifeblood of our planet, she works with biologists discovering new species, physicists tracking climate change, and hydrogeologists examining our finite freshwater reserves. Written with hair-raising intensity, Into the Planet is the first book to deliver an intimate account of cave diving, transporting readers deep into inner space, where fear must be reconciled and a mission's success balances between knowing one's limits and pushing the envelope of human endurance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maverick, innovator, entrepreneur, environmentalist and sheer force of nature, Francis Toribiong would have been a unique and significant individual no matter where in the world he was born. As it turned out, he was born in the island nation of Palau in the Western Pacific at just the right time to apply his special set of skills and attributes to the task of helping his country find its place in the world. In the 1980s and 1990s, he arguably did more than anyone to build Palau's economy and help it develop into an independent, forward-looking nation. And, improbably, he achieved this via the sport of scuba diving. Francis Toribiong is a Pacific Islander like no other. He is the father of Palau tourism, a scuba diving pioneer, and an effective, tireless ambassador for both his country and its abundant marine and land resources. He was born poor and had no academic leanings. Yet he was driven to succeed by a combination of duty, faith, a deep-seated determination to do the right thing and an absolute refusal ever to compromise his values. For his whole life, he has been a devoted friend to strangers and an implacable opponent to anybody who, through malevolence or negligence, threatens Palau's considerable natural treasures. He has also been the perfect host to generations of scuba divers from all over the world, who have visited Palau to see those treasures for themselves. And, as well as all that, he was Palau's first ever parachutist - known throughout the islands as the Palauan who fell from the sky. They were speaking both literally and figuratively. He was so completely different from all of his contemporaries in terms of his demeanor, his ambitions and his vision, that it was as if he had come from outer space. Palau had never seen anybody quite like him and there was no historical precedent for what Francis Toribiong did. He had no operations manual to consult and no examples to follow. He wrote his own life. Francis Toribiong was the first Palauan ever to seek and seize the international narrative. No Palauan, in any context or field, had previously thought to go out into the world and say: - "This is Palau - what we have is wonderful. Come and see!" This is his astonishing story. With over 80 images from Francis' life and of Palau, both above and below the water. The pictures in the paperback are black and white. In the e-book, older pictures are black and white, newer ones are full colour.

And dripping with water is how Dottie has spent much of her remarkably adventurous and long life. What is amazing about Dottie is not just WHAT she did, but WHEN she did it: Ocean swimming and boating as a child in the 1920s, as well as surfing, skin diving and spearfishing. In the 30s she was a skin-diving instructor. In the 1940s she was a 'Rosie the Riveter' during the war years and a commercial fisher to help feed her growing family. In 1950 she was a charter member of the famed Long Beach Neptunes dive club. And in 1955, she became the world's first certified female scuba instructor. She was also a hard-hat diver and was the first female dive shop owner and wetsuit manufacturer. Dottie tells her extraordinary life story in her own words, bringing to life her early childhood in Long Beach, California, where she was raised as the son her father never had, to being honored in 2019, at the age of 97, with the Historical Diving Society Diving Pioneer Award.

He brought it to great success with his talent for marketing. Bob produced Cayman's first promotional film, to advertise the island's sun, sea, sand and amazing underwater beauty. With his permission, the Department of Tourism used the movie as their main advertising tool for many years. It was not long before the Cayman Islands became the top scuba diving destination in the world and Bob Soto's Diving became internationally renowned alongside it. Bob provided the only sea search-and-rescue operation from the time he returned to Cayman. Many times day and night Bob was called out to assist in searching for people and boats. He was always available to help anyone. His experience with the US Navy carried over well into his operations here. Bob also championed conservation issues, lobbying the government to designate the first protected marine park for his beloved sea creatures and the coral reefs. Bob stopped divers and snorkelers from taking coral long before there was an actual conservation movement or any law established to protect the marine environment, thus preserving his island's "treasures." His uncanny problem-solving ability enabled him to invent and build his own scuba equipment, attracting increasing numbers of tourists to experience Cayman's magnificent underwater world with Bob Soto's Diving. He was always working on the "next" adventure, leading to his incredible tales of treasure hunting and pioneering live-aboard diving. As the business grew, Bob eventually built a dive lodge in East End. Bob was a Christian man. He was kind, gentle, and loving, always with a smile, but not to be crossed! He had a passion to honor others, as evidenced by his work on "Tradition," the memorial to seamen, which has become a favorite statue in Heroes Square in George Town, where thousands have taken photos alongside the father and son steering a ship into the "abyss." In November 2014, he had the Home Guard veterans honored with all their names etched on the cenotaph in front of the Elmslie Memorial Church.
