Histoires qui reflètent les défaillances d’une diversité d’adultes et d’institutions, voire de la société tout entière. Histoires singulières, mais où se retrouvent des convergences, ces parcours de vie mettant en relief l’ensemble des éléments qui amènent les jeunes à entrer dans la spirale du décrochage. Cette étude de terrain présente la pratique d’accompagnement de trois organismes communautaires de lutte au décrochage scolaire auprès de jeunes en difficulté à l’école secondaire, dans trois régions du Québec (urbaine, semi-urbaine et rurale). De plus, elle met de l’avant le point de vue des jeunes : nonobstant la durée de leur séjour, l’OCLD est devenu un véritable milieu de vie pour ces jeunes, où ils ont établi des relations significatives et où ils ont retrouvé le goût d’apprendre. Convaincus que la connaissance globale et fine des parcours des jeunes est nécessaire et que l’accompagnement se définit comme une rencontre, comme l’établissement d’une alliance symbolique entre sujets, l’auteure et ses collaborateurs s’adressent à tous les adultes qui côtoient des jeunes en difficulté à l’école secondaire afin qu’ils puissent aider ces derniers à s’ouvrir à un meilleur avenir.

Considérant le haut taux de décrochage scolaire qui sévit actuellement, il est apparu pertinent d'observer de plus près la manière dont les jeunes définissent leurs expériences dans le milieu familial avant leur sortie du système scolaire afin de scruter la perception qu'ils peuvent avoir de l'influence de certaines pratiques parentales des parents chez eux. Les questions de recherche qui guident cette étude sont les suivantes : "Quelles sont les perceptions que les jeunes ont des relations qu'ils entretiennent avec leurs parents?" et "En quoi et comment les perceptions qu'ont les jeunes au regard du soutien à l'autonomie, de l'engagement parental, et de l'encadrement qu'ils reçoivent à la maison peuvent éclairer leur décision de sortir du système scolaire avant d'avoir complété leurs études de niveau secondaire?". Pour répondre à ces questions, l'entrevue apparaît comme la méthode la plus efficace car elle permet de recueillir des données subjectives qui requièrent d'interroger les jeunes adultes directement. Les données recueillies font l'objet d'une analyse de contenu en s'inspirant des étapes de l'Écuyer (1987, 1990). Étant donné que cette recherche mise sur la compréhension du vécu des jeunes adultes ayant quitté le système scolaire avant l'achèvement de leurs études de niveau secondaire en se basant sur leurs perceptions, elle s'inscrit dans une approche qualitative. Il semble émaner des résultats de cette étude un éclairage différent du décrochage scolaire. En fait, l'analyse des données permet de constater que la rareté des rencontres familiales pouvant nourrir le lien affectif entre les parents et les jeunes et promouvoir la communication au sein de la famille a pu contribuer à affaiblir l'investissement personnel et scolaire des jeunes adultes de notre étude. Également, l'absence d'un cadre adéquat fourni par les parents, tel que manifesté dans les règles et rituels, et le peu de suivi offert par les parents suite à la formulation de règles sont d'autres conditions propices à un moins grand investissement qui ont pu mener au décrochage scolaire.
