Book excerpt: Who knew there were so many bluegrasses in Mexico?ÿ This monographic study of the Mexican species of the large (500+ species), taxonomically complex, world-wide genus Poa, by Smithsonian researchers Robert J. Soreng and Paulÿ M. Peterson, revealed there were 23, including 2 new to science, and 2 previously unknown there.ÿ Two other narrow endemics were described only in the last 10 years. The Mexican species occur mainly in the mountains, and especially in the alpine.ÿ Most of the species occurrences in Mexico presumably reflect establishment during cooler climates of past glacial cycles. Today, several are living on the edge of extinction. Eleven natives are globally rare, or rare in Mexico. Breeding system diversity is high: asexual seed production is obligate in several and facultative in some others, one is dioecious, and some are gynomonoecious, several are perfect-flowered.ÿ At least 3 arrived by long-distance-dispersal from South America?s Andes; 2 aided by asexual reproduction, 1 by the capacity to self-fertilize.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive treatment of all known bat-dispersed plants in the New World tropics and covers a total of 549 species in 191 genera from 62 plant families. It places a special emphasis on the flowering plants and bat fauna of the relatively undisturbed forests of central French Guiana. In particular, detailed descriptions of 112 bat-dispersed species from that area are complemented by color photographs that will help other researchers identify fruits and seeds throughout the Neotropics. Going beyond merely describing these species, the authors compare and analyze the diverse traits of plants dispersed by bats to reexamine bat preferences of some fruiting plants over the others, a phenomenon known as the "bat-fruit syndrome." The seed dispersers too are given ample treatment, with descriptions of the foraging ecology and feeding behaviors of the 37 fruit-eating bats found in central French Guiana. The monograph includes complementing appendices that allow the reader to determine all bat species reported to feed on the fruits of a particular plant and all fruiting plants in the diet of a particular bat species. It summarizes decades of research on bat-plant interactions from many parts of the Neotropics, providing a stimulus for further ecological and evolutionary studies--

An estimated one in three couples suffer from problems associated with one partner having a higher libido than the other. Marriage therapist Michele Weiner Davis has written THE SEX-STARVED MARRIAGE to help couples come to terms with this problem. Weiner Davis shows you how to address pyschological factors like depression, poor body image and communication problems that affect sexual desire. With separate chapters for the spouse that's ready for action and the spouse that's ready for sleep, THE SEX-STARVED MARRIAGE will help you re-spark your passion and stop you fighting about sex. Weiner Davis is renowned for her straight-talking style and here she puts it to great use to let you know you're not alone in having marital sex problems. Bitterness or complacency about ho-hum sex can ruin a marriage, breaking the emotional tie of good sex.
