They show the historical origins of the project of a European union, the desire to consolidate the continent’s ties to the Maghreb or to Turkey, the importance granted to commerce and the worries engendered by history’s convulsions, but also the hope vested in future generations. Il s’oriente, tout d’abord, vers l’étoile la plus brillante dans le ciel, puis ensuite, il voit dans la lune une source plus grande de quiétude, mais, finalement, c’est dans le soleil que sera sa fin. Ainsi, l’itinérant spirituel n’a de cesse d’aller à la rencontre du compagnon suprême, par lequel il sortira de la caverne de l’oubli et des passions vers l’éveil, à travers le souvenir de sa véritable identité. L’oubli caractérise l’homme qui, par sa chute dans ce monde, a établi pour base fondamentale ses propres interprétations et ce qu’il pense comme étant vrai. C’est pourquoi le voyageur étranger, sans attache, est celui dont le cœur est le plus disposé à entendre la vérité de l’au-delà, car il a fait de cette vie ici-bas un lieu de séjour temporaire. « L’islam a commencé comme quelque chose d’étrange et il redeviendra comme quelque chose d’étrange, alors annoncez la bonne nouvelle aux étrangers, ceux qui remettent droit ce que les gens ont corrompu. » (hadith)

Silvia Berti has offered evidence it was written by Jan Vroesen. The Trois imposteurs has attracted quite a bit of recent attention as one of the most significant irreligious clandestine writings available in the Enlightenment, which is most important for understanding the develop ment of religious scepticism, radical deism, and even atheism in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Scholars for the last couple of decades have been trying to assess when the work was actually written or compiled and by whom. In view of the widespread distribution of manu scripts of the work all over Europe, they have also been seeking to find out who was influenced by the work, and what it represented for its time. Hitherto unknown manuscripts are being turned up in public and private libraries all over Europe and the United States.
