Book excerpt: This is a memoir of a remarkable woman. Born in 1915, a Jewess in Berlin, she lived a comfortable life until a few days before her eighteenth birthday. A shocking experience convinced her that she and her family were not safe and that they must leave Germany as soon as possible. Her mother resisted but was finally convinced. Soon after Liddy's journey began. I met Liddy and heard just a small part of the story twenty years ago and was intrigued by the instinct of one so young. Could I have understood the consequences of just one incident at seventeen? I never forgot the story but was too busy to pursue it. When Liddy's daughter renewed our acquaintance by e-mail; I was retired and had the time and the desire to attempt to present this story. As Liddy told me the story I realized that Liddy's insight and instinct impacted much of her life. The arduous journey to Israel; the difficult adjustment to life in such a different place; the patience to endure the ordeal of one of her few mistakes; the courage to take calculated risks; all contribute to this interesting life. Liddy's life is interesting because she made it so. I have enjoyed writing it and can only hope that the reader might find it enjoyable as well. Jude Shaw

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open-Eyed Adoption presents a compassionate look at uncovering the mysteries of the adoptive parent/adoptee relationship Open-Eyed Adoption is written for the purpose of supplying a resource for those who have adopted children as well as those who are considering the possibility of doing so. Often adoptive parents are ill-prepared and uninformed as to the unique challenges that raising adopted children presents. For instance, the earlier a parent knows that an adoptee has trauma from the beginning, the better equipped they can be to adapting their parenting style vs what may have been the style of their own parents. Being unaware of this, they can be confused and discouraged as to what they are seeing and why their adopted child responds the way they do. They may even be bewildered, due to the amount of love they give, to see a different response than they expect. This book gives resource and tools to the parent for better understanding of what may be happening in the heart of their child. The information contained in Open-Eyed Adoption can also be used when parents are communicating with their adult adopted children. It encourages parents to look at parenting from different angles when it comes to the adoptee. Furthermore, Open- Eyed Adoption dispels the myth that they are all alone, takes a look at the importance of self-kindness and shows the way to get the support they need.

Book excerpt: "Smart and funny . . . Liddy will resonate for readers who love strong, mature women with a bit of Irish fire, as with fans of Cecelia Ahern and Marian Keyes and Maria Semple’s Where’d You Go, Bernadette." --Booklist A witty and captivating novel about a modern-day superwoman who leans in so far she falls over Forty-four, fit, and fabulous, Liddy James is one of New York’s top divorce attorneys, a bestselling author, and a mother of two. Armed with a ruthless reputation and a capsule wardrobe, she glides through the courtrooms and salons of the Manhattan elite with ease. What’s her secret? Liddy will tell you: “I don’t do guilt!” This is the last thing literature professor Peter James wants to hear. Devastated by his divorce from Liddy six years earlier, the two have a tangled history his new partner, Rose, is only just sorting out. But Rose is a patient woman with faith in a well-timed miracle and she’s determined to be sympathetic to Peter’s plight. Together, Liddy, Peter, and Rose have formed a modern family to raise Liddy and Peter’s truculent teen and Liddy’s darling, if fatherless, six-year-old. But when Rose announces she’s pregnant, Liddy’s nanny takes flight, the bill for a roof repair looms, and a high-profile divorce case becomes too personal, Liddy realizes her days as a guilt-free woman might be over. Following a catastrophic prime-time TV interview, she carts her sons back to Ireland to retrace their family’s history. But marooned in the Celtic countryside things are still far from simple, and Liddy will have to come to terms with much more than a stormy neighbor and an unorthodox wedding if she ever hopes to rediscover the real Liddy James. Fun, fearless, and full of heart, The Real Liddy James takes a fresh look at the balancing act every family performs. With the deft characterization and sharp wit that made her first novel an international bestseller, Anne-Marie Casey invites us into the ambitions, passions, and misadventures of this extraordinary heroine. "Witty, clever, elegantly-written, fascinating and wise. I ADORED." --Marian Keyes, internationally bestselling author "Whip-smart and crackling with energy . . . had me stopping nearly every page to read paragraphs out loud to anyone who would listen. A true delight!" --Elin Hilderbrand, New York Times bestselling author

In her Regional America series, author and illustrator Lois Lenski presents realistic portrayals of unforgettable young people facing hardships and triumphs across the diverse United States. The Newbery Medal–winning Strawberry Girl follows day-to-day life for Birdie and her family on a berry farm in Florida, as they deal with heat, droughts, cold snaps, and difficult neighbors. In Prairie School, a young girl gets stranded at her South Dakota school by a winter storm; in Bayou Suzette, the Cajun Suzette strikes up an unlikely friendship with a Native American girl in the swamps of Louisiana; and Blue Ridge Billy is the story of a boy who dreams of playing the fiddle. Other novels follow the lives of a young farmer who wants to quit school and work on his family’s Iowa farm; an Asian-American boy adjusting to city life in San Francisco’s Chinatown; and an adolescent lumberjack in the forests of Oregon. Beyond changing the face of children’s literature, Lenski’s stories endure because of their moving and believable depictions of young people from often overlooked communities. Through her art, Lenski gives these characters a voice that continues to ring loud and clear for modern readers. This ebook includes Strawberry Girl, Prairie School, Bayou Suzette, Blue Ridge Billy, Corn-Farm Boy, San Francisco Boy, and To Be a Logger.

Women are not part of Sigurd Sigmundson's existence, and Eilidith should purely be a means to an end to gain access to a well-guarded Viking stronghold. He would have to be made of iron, though, not to be stirred by the warmly sensual woman beneath her ice-cold shield. Liddy has been made to feel ugly and insignificant because of her facial birthmark. Surely her captor couldn't physically desire her? But, oh, how the stifled, passionate Liddy yearns to experience unrestrained love in his arms…

They probably wouldn’t listen anyway; they’re too busy having fun in each other’s company. So it’s really not too surprising that they’re together when they discover something really unusual and, as Peter put it, “weird...like seeing something really ordinary in a place where it absolutely and completely does not belong, and that’s just the start of a whole chain of events that sucks you in deeper and deeper and nearly drives you crazy...” Well, Peter, maybe not crazy, more like nearly dead a couple of times. Neither you nor Robert would have thought that finding a car buried in the town dump would have led to such desperate days, which forced you to locate a killer before you became another of his victims. Nor would you have imagined that there are more ways of saving a friend’s life than you might think.

Book excerpt: Only in retrospect did Felicity realize that walking along mud banks that separated paddy fields in rural India and sitting at the local well for hours on end observing the villagers - who were also observing her - was somewhat incongruous for a European child with light coloured eyes. Likewise, being placed in an orphanage at the age of one when her mother died. Felicity had an unusual way out from her deprivation at the age of twelve when she joined the Deccan Queen railway journey at an elite girls' boarding school run by nuns from Oxford, England graduating with a Cambridge High School Certificate at the age of eighteen. This story traces the stepping stones from the foundling home in Bombay to Felicity stepping off a P&O ship in Sydney, Australia. The timeframe of the story is in the 1930's. 1940's and 1950's, a time of great change as India transitioned from a British colony to an independent nation.
