Book excerpt: As more people live longer, the need for quality long-term care for the elderly will increase dramatically. This volume examines the current system of nursing home regulations, and proposes an overhaul to better provide for those confined to such facilities. It determines the need for regulations, and concludes that the present regulatory system is inadequate, stating that what is needed is not more regulation, but better regulation. This long-anticipated study provides a wealth of useful background information, in-depth study, and discussion for nursing home administrators, students, and teachers in the health care field; professionals involved in caring for the elderly; and geriatric specialists.

Book Synopsis A Study of Demographics, Self-perception, and Response to Change as it Relates to Job Choice in Iowa-licensed Nursing Home Administrators by : Wendy Ringgenberg
Download or read book A Study of Demographics, Self-perception, and Response to Change as it Relates to Job Choice in Iowa-licensed Nursing Home Administrators written by Wendy Ringgenberg and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999, Iowa had 720 active, licensed nursing home administrators (LNHA) on file at the Iowa Department of Public Health and 429 existing nursing facilities that require a licensed nursing home administrator to fill the top management position in the facility. This computes to 1.7 licensed nursing home administrators for every one nursing facility. With such a high proportion of qualified candidates to fill the nursing home administrator position (NHA), there should not be any problems hiring and filling the nursing home administrator position. However, in Iowa many nursing homes experience difficulty attracting and hiring a licensed nursing home administrator to fill a vacant nursing home administrator position. This study investigates the differences in Iowa-licensed nursing home administrators when comparing those who choose to work in the nursing home administrator capacity or those who choose to work in a capacity other than nursing home administrator by investigating a relationship between demographic variables, self-perception questions, and responses to change measured by the PRF-E Change Scale (Jackson, 1999). The research question asks, "Are there individual differences in demographic variables, self-perception questions, and responses to change which contribute to the ability to cope or thrive in the nursing home administrator position?"
Book Synopsis Nursing Staff in Hospitals and Nursing Homes by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Nursing Staff in Hospitals and Nursing Homes written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-03-27 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hospitals and nursing homes are responding to changes in the health care system by modifying staffing levels and the mix of nursing personnel. But do these changes endanger the quality of patient care? Do nursing staff suffer increased rates of injury, illness, or stress because of changing workplace demands? These questions are addressed in Nursing Staff in Hospitals and Nursing Homes, a thorough and authoritative look at today's health care system that also takes a long-term view of staffing needs for nursing as the nation moves into the next century. The committee draws fundamental conclusions about the evolving role of nurses in hospitals and nursing homes and presents recommendations about staffing decisions, nursing training, measurement of quality, reimbursement, and other areas. The volume also discusses work-related injuries, violence toward and abuse of nursing staffs, and stress among nursing personnelâ€"and examines whether these problems are related to staffing levels. Included is a readable overview of the underlying trends in health care that have given rise to urgent questions about nurse staffing: population changes, budget pressures, and the introduction of new technologies. Nursing Staff in Hospitals and Nursing Homes provides a straightforward examination of complex and sensitive issues surround the role and value of nursing on our health care system.
