Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing the needs of new adults—those ages 18–29—in the library is an important challenge. This book explains the needs and wants of new adults in the public library setting and identifies their preferences in physical space, programming, and technology. According to the Pew Research Center's 2015 Libraries at the Crossroads Report, 52 percent of people between the ages of 16 and 29 visited a bookmobile or library within the past year. Yet many public libraries' programming and outreach skip over this demographic, jumping from teen services to older adults. Library Programs and Services for New Adults provides a road map for including new adults into the family of the small public library and offers a variety of resources and programming ideas that librarians can use immediately. Author Kyla Hunt—a library technology and trends specialist—explains why the needs of new adults are typically overlooked at public libraries, defines who "new adults" are, and explains why serving their needs is key to the success of today's public libraries. Readers will come away with an in-depth understanding of the mindset and needs of patrons who are 18 to 29 years old and be able to cater to their preferences as they pertain to physical space, programming, technology, and marketing.

Book excerpt: Inspired by trends in U.S. public libraries, this book teaches librarians how to create a welcoming environment that enriches, enlightens, and engages their library's growing aging community. The number of adults aged 50+ coming to public libraries is steadily increasing. These patrons include active, healthy, tech-savvy professionals; people who have little or no computer training; retirees; travelers; and those who have age-related health and behavior issues. Public libraries have an opportunity to provide services for this growing and varied group. This book teaches librarians how to develop and expand adult public library programming and services, turning their library into a welcoming environment for the aging community. Public Library Programs and Services for Midlife and Beyond offers practical examples in areas including community collaboration, outreach, marketing, engagement, technology and social media, funding, and lifelong learning. It also incorporates up-to-date findings from the ALA's Guidelines for Library Services with 60+ Audience: Best Practices. Examples gathered by the author from extensive interviews with public librarians and directors illustrate what a range of libraries is successfully doing for the midlife-and-beyond community and encourage creative thinking about new programs and services.

Each survey was conducted with a different nationally representative sample of public libraries. Data was collected for individual buildings rather than for library systems. Findings indicate the following: (1) children and young adults represent 60% of public library patronage; (2) 30% of public librarians specialize in youth services; (3) 39% of libraries employ a children's librarian, 11% have a young adult librarian, and 24% have a youth services specialist on staff; (4) 30% of all public libraries have only one librarian on staff; (5) ethnic diversity of children and young adult patrons has increased over 40% in the last 5 years; (6) computer technologies are among the most heavily used children's and young adult resources in public libraries and are also the most scarce; (7) many library programs primarily target preschool and kindergarten children; (8) only 76% of public libraries report working with schools; (9) only one in seven libraries offer homework assistance programs; (10) 11% of public libraries have neither a young adult collection or section; and (11) insufficient library staff is a leading barrier to increasing services and resources for children and young adults. Survey data is provided in 21 tables and 14 figures. Appendices present survey methodology and data reliability, a list of tables with standard errors, and survey forms. (AEF)

Book excerpt: Senior citizens (frequently referred to by the more inclusive term “older adults”) are one of the largest and fastest growing demographics in the world. Public libraries have a duty to serve these individuals with the same level of care and opportunity for participation that is afforded to younger generations. This book explores older adults’ values and needs and describes the many ways libraries can serve them in effective ways. Senior Services Today: A Practical Guide for Librarians is a comprehensive guide to library services for this important community. Chapters cover these critical areas: Engaging Older Adults in Library Programs and Services Understanding Demographic Differences Marketing to Older Adults: Strategies Programming Ideas for Older Adults in the Modern Age Enhancing Technology Accessibility for Older Adults Community Outreach: Serving Outside the Library Specialty Collections Items Continuing the Library’s Relationship with an Aging Population While many times libraries tend to allocate budget and funding to flashier, brighter programs aimed at a more youthful audiences, this book shows how and why that same enthusiasm should be applied to crafting an engaging senior services plan. Gone are the conventional days of bingo and knitting circles; while those programs certainly have their place, this books aims to show that seniors also crave fun experiences alongside opportunities to make their own lives easier and more stress free-- and to illuminates how libraries can strike this balance by offering an enriching senior services roster.

Book excerpt: Beyond Books: Adult Library Programs for a New Era takes us out of the stacks and past the traditional walls of the library to reach underserved and overworked adults in our communities -- adults who might not think they need the library in their lives. Readers are introduced to the concept of adult programming through a multifaceted approach based on a solid foundation of behavioral science, real-life library experience, and data on current trends in libraries and other institutions. This book posits that offering diverse adult programs is an important catalyst for fostering community connection and individual wellness, and that no librarian needs to deliver them alone. Partnerships are not only helpful; they are essential to preventing librarian burnout. Themes of the book center on passive versus active programs, the importance of intergenerational involvement, and programs that touch a variety of topics divided by the following sections: Food & Drink, Arts & Crafts, Books & Writing, Technology & Media, Health & Wellness, Business & Finance, and Nature & Gardening. This book provides clear, step-by-step models and strategies for delivering adult programs (both in-person and online), including where to find funding, getting administrative and municipal buy-in, creating partnerships in the community, addressing possible legal issues, marketing tactics, training staff and volunteers, and how to evaluate programs. Whether you’re a student, a brand new recruit, or a seasoned public or academic librarian, there will be something in this book to inspire you to move your adult library programs beyond book clubs (without losing those too!).

Book excerpt: This booklet was prepared in recognition of the 25th anniversary of the watershed Adult Education Act of 1966, and in acknowledgement of the key role that libraries have played in U.S. adult education throughout the century. Written by library educators, the two commissioned papers that make up the booklet describe the role of public libraries in adult education since 1900. In the first paper, "Beginnings: Public Libraries and Adult Education from 1900 to 1966," Margaret E. Monroe traces the development of literacy education in the context of library adult education from the beginning of the 20th century until 1966. In the second paper, "The Developing Role of Public Libraries in Adult Education: 1966 to 1991," Kathleen M. Heim reviews the contributions of libraries and librarians to literacy, lifelong learning, and adult education over the past 25 years. The booklet concludes with a list of 117 selected readings which relate to the theme of libraries and adult education. (MAB)

Book excerpt: These standards provide measures for evaluating communities' needs for public library services, and summarize the essentials for quality service for youth and those who work with youth. New management tools, specifically guides for planning and role setting and manuals for defining output measures, the challenge of electronic access, as well as the State of New York mandate that public libraries provide Outreach Services necessitated a revision of standards. Forty-two standards are divided into the following chapters: "Philosophy of Service"; "Recommendations for Planning for Public Library Service for Youth"; "Recommendations for Staffing for Public Library Service for Youth"; "Recommendations for Service for Children"; and "Recommendations for Service for Youth Adults." Appendices include a list of the Standards; a discussion of the effect of the Americans with Disabilities Act on library services for youth; a summary of the planning process; a chart illustrating developmental characteristics of youth and their relationship to library services; the American Library Association competencies for librarians serving children and youth; recommendations on furniture and equipment for children; and minimum standards for public libraries in New York State.
