It does not contain the left-overs from the preceding thirteen volumes but serves rather as their comple ment. The history of a nation's literature or of a part Of a nation's literature cannot be adequately written if the com piler confines himself to the names of the known master builders. Such a method would exclude ballads and folksongs. It would exclude the countless short poems and incisive say ings, the songs and stories that wander unattached through literature but that none the less embody and in time te-create a people's ideals. Even when the name Of the writer is known, the poem may assume an individuality apart from that Of the poet. The poem lives but has not bulk enough to entitle its author to a place among poets. The Star Spangled Banner and Dixie, for example, reflect history and have helped to make history. They belong, therefore, to literature, though their authors may not be entitled to formal recognition among American poets. This volume, then, has an individuality Of its own. The use of this material should by no means be allowed to render the teaching of litera ture mechanical. That the literature itself is the main object should constantly be borne in mind. To read with clearness, accuracy, and expression the poems and stories and essays, and enjoy their intellectual, emotional, and esthetic qualities, is the highest desideratum. To over emphasize the letter is to deaden the spirit; but on the other hand, to neglect the letter is frequently to leave closed all avenues of approach to anything like an appreci ation of the production. The only effectual way of getting at the spirit of a literary production, particularly in the earlier stages of education, is through knowledge gained by attention to the letter. It is absolutely necessary, then, to study words, allusions, thought units and the general technical elements of literary construction. The child must be given as a basis of knowledge the details of literary values before he can properly perceive or estimate the spirit of literary art as a whole. Book excerpt: A Speckled Bird By Augusta Jane Evans Augusta Jane Wilson, or Augusta Evans Wilson, (May 8, 1835 - May 9, 1909) was an American Southern author and one of the pillars of Southern literature. She was born Augusta Jane Evans on May 8, 1835, in Columbus, Georgia. The area of her birth was then known as Wynnton (now MidTown). As a young girl in 19th-century America she received little in the way of a formal education. However, she became a voracious reader at an early age. Her father, Matthew Evans, suffered bankruptcy and lost the family's Sherwood Hall property in the 1840s. He moved his family of 10 from Georgia to San Antonio, Texas, in 1845. Wilson wrote in the domestic sentimental style of the Victorian Age. Critics have praised the intellectual competence of her female characters, but as her heroes eventually succumb to traditional values, Evans has been described as an antifeminist. Of St. Elmo one critic maintained, "the trouble with the heroine of St. Elmo was that she swallowed an unabridged dictionary." Wilson was the first American woman author to earn over $100,000. This would be a record unsurpassed until Edith Wharton. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. At the Mercy of Tiberius tells the page-turning story of Beryl, accused of murdering her grandfather whom she had just visited and with whom she had a confrontation. All evidence pointed to Beryl who stood to gain if the old general died. His will, which stated that everything he owned was to go to his adopted son, was missing and so everything would go to Beryl's mother.
