Book Synopsis Libraries as Dysfunctional Organizations and Workplaces by : Spencer Acadia
Download or read book Libraries as Dysfunctional Organizations and Workplaces written by Spencer Acadia and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Libraries as Dysfunctional Organizations and Workplaces expands the "dysfunctional" concept in the professional and academic LIS discourse by exposing the internal problematics of libraries, especially at the social and organizational levels. Including contributions written by LIS professionals and scholars, the book demonstrates that although many libraries do well at attending to users and managing external information they often fail at taking care of their own employees and addressing internal workplace issues. Acadia and the contributing authors explore the problem of dysfunctional libraries so that the LIS profession can come to terms with the systemic dysfunction in their institutions and begin solution-oriented progress toward new and sustainable functionality. The book analyzes the dysfunctional nature of modern libraries, while simultaneously proposing solutions to reduce and alleviate dysfunction. Through theory and application, it takes an explicit practice-based approach with the intent to inform and explain dysfunction as experienced in the library workplace at individual and structural levels and perspectives. Libraries as Dysfunctional Organizations and Workplaces brings the dysfunction discourse to the attention of LIS academics and scholars so that further theoretical and empirical research can proceed from and subsequently be addressed in library and information schools. The book will also be essential reading for librarians and LIS students currently working or preparing to work in public, college, and university libraries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume 42 of the Educational Media and Technology Yearbook. For the past 40 years, our Yearbook has contributed to the field of Educational Technology in presenting contemporary topics, ideas, and developments regarding diverse technology tools for educational purposes. Our Yearbook has inspired researchers, practitioners, and teachers to consider how to develop technological designs and develop curricula and instruction integrating technology to enhance student learning, teach diverse populations across levels with effective technology integration, and apply technology in interactive ways to motivate students to engage in course content. In addition, Volume 42 features the Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) research and educational use cases, organized and coordinated by Vivienne and David. This section provides evidence that the affordances of AR, VR, and mixed reality, defined as an immersive multi-platform experience reality (XR), have begun to make indelible changes in teaching and learning in the United States. XR’s recent developments stimulated the editors to propose a special edition to mark the interoperability of immersive technology to push the boundaries of human curiosity, creativity, and problem solving. After years of incremental development, XR has reached a critical level of investment, infrastructure, and emerging production. The chapters included in this section illustrate how XR can push user inquiry, engagement, learning, and interactivity to new levels within physical and digital contexts.

Book Synopsis Internationalization and the North American University Library by : Karen Bordonaro
Download or read book Internationalization and the North American University Library written by Karen Bordonaro and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-08-08 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a fresh perspective on understanding university library work with international users in North America. It investigates what librarians, international students, and international scholars perceive the role of the university library to be in internationalization in higher education. It also explores the phenomenon of internationalization itself as it is lived and experienced by both librarians and international users. Personal definitions and experiences of internationalization offered by librarians and international users include viewing internationalization as the broadening of knowledge on multiple levels, the idea of seeing oneself as part of a greater whole, and the building of international research connections. Both librarians and international users describe elements of internationalization such as exposure, awareness, engagement, empathy, and transcending boundaries. Inherent contradictions are present as well, such as the stronger emphasis on defining differences rather than similarities and the disconnect between inward and outward looking aspects of internationalization. Finally, this book connects theoretical perspectives concerning the phenomenon of internationalization to the practice of academic librarianship in North America. It does this by presenting what librarians in both the United States and Canada think about working with international users in terms of benefits, challenges, and best practices. Practical lessons learned include the need to move beyond focusing solely on the linguistic and cultural challenges of working with international users to also consider the positive aspects of working with them, such as widening worldviews and expanding personal knowledge.
