Book Synopsis Yoga and Psychology by : Harold Coward
Download or read book Yoga and Psychology written by Harold Coward and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harold Coward explores how the psychological aspects of Yoga philosophy have been important to intellectual developments both East and West. Foundational for Hindu, Jaina, and Buddhist thought and spiritual practice, Patañjali's Yoga Sutras, the classical statement of Eastern Yoga, are unique in their emphasis on the nature and importance of psychological processes. Yoga's influence is explored in the work of both the seminal Indian thinker Bhartrhari (c. 600 C.E.) and among key figures in Western psychology: founders Freud and Jung, as well as contemporary transpersonalists such as Washburn, Tart, and Ornstein.. Coward shows how the yogic notion of psychological processes makes Bhartrhari's philosophy of language and his theology of revelation possible. He goes on to explore how Western psychology has been influenced by incorporating or rejecting Patañjali's Yoga. The implications of these trends in Western thought for mysticism and memory are examined as well. This analysis results in a notable insight, namely, that there is a crucial difference between Eastern and Western thought with regard to how limited or perfectible human nature is—the West maintaining that we as humans are psychologically, philosophically, and spiritually limited or flawed in nature and thus not perfectible, while Patañjali's Yoga and Eastern thought generally maintain the opposite. Different Western responses to the Eastern position are noted, from complete rejection by Freud, Jung, and Hick, to varying degrees of acceptance by transpersonal thinkers.

Book excerpt: Jeevan Mukti or 'Liberation in Life' is a collection of discourses by a liberated and practical saint of our times - Baba Faqir Chand Ji Maharaj. His sublime, direct and lucid words emerge from his practical experiences and therefore encourage sincere seekers to practically apply and test these teachings in their own lives. This idea of liberation or salvation is found in all major religions in one form or another, but what is this liberation that a person might seek in this life? Those who come to this inner path of spiritual research either come with curiosity or longing due to suffering and restlessness experienced in this impermanent world of duality and change. Liberation in life is freedom from suffering and whatever keeps us from realizing the ultimate peace, happiness and rest which is our own true nature. Baba Faqir Chand Maharaj openly and directly shares his experiences and wisdom for the benefit of all humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth volume in Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen's ambitious five volume systematic theology develops a constructive Christian pneumatology and soteriology in dialogue with the Christian tradition, with contemporary theology in all its global and contextual diversity, and with other major living faiths -- Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. Kärkkäinen constructs a wide and deep theology of the Holy Spirit, examining creation and the sciences, other cosmic powers and beings, the concepts of spirits in other religions, and the Spirit's place in society and politics. He also goes beyond traditional ways of understanding salvation -- election, forgiveness, justification, sanctification, and glorification -- and includes discussions of Spirit-baptism, healing and restoration, reconciliation, liberation, and peace-building, carefully comparing Christian perspectives with the salvific views of other religions.

Book Synopsis Vijayanagara Voices by : William J. Jackson
Download or read book Vijayanagara Voices written by William J. Jackson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vijayanagara Empire flourished in South India between 1336 and 1565. Conveying the depth and creativity of Hindu religious and literary expression during that time, Vijayanagara Voices explores some of the contributions made by poets, singer-saints, and philosophers. Through translations and discussions of their lives and times, Jackson presents the voices of these cultural figures and reflects on the concerns of their era, looking especially into the vivid images in their works and their legends. He examines how these images convey both spiritual insights and physical experiences with memorable candour. The studies also raise intriguing questions about the empire's origins and its response to Muslim invaders, its 'Hinduness', and reasons for its ultimate decline. Vijayanagara Voices is a book about patterns in history, literature and life in South India. By examining the culture's archetypal displays, by understanding the culture in its own terms, and by comparing associated images and ideas from other cultures, this book offers unique insights into a rich and influential period in Indian history.
