Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flamenco has taken the world by storm, with huge crowds experiencing its power. Ironically, though, if the performance is authentic - and much in the tourist trade is not - the uninitiated may find it baffling; the rhythms are exotic and strange, the intensity of feeling startling. Yet for the Andalusians, flamenco has been familiar for a thousand years: it is the song of the outcasts. Robin Totton writes from his life among them, for he has come as close to flamenco as any outsider can hope to. Readers will follow as he walks us through the poetic song forms, the rhythmic guitar and the flamboyant dance, as well as the vocabulary, names and places of living art of flamenco. Item #00331637 is a paperback edition with an accompanying CD.

Book excerpt: Far beyond its immediate image of robed choirs, Gospel - through its solo singers and quartets, its impresarios and recording companies - has helped to give voice to the history of black people in America as well as shaping more obviously secular musical forms such as blues and rock 'n' roll. In this compelling and lively study, Steve Turner tells the story of Gospel against the backdrop of the social and economic changes taking place in the USA over a century and a half. He traces its history from its earliest expressions on the plantations of the south to initial influences in churches, its movement into the mainstream of popular music and on to its major period of popularity and influence in the middle decades of the 20th century. The book also features original interviews conducted by the author with many of the legendary figures of Gospel and is illustrated with photographs throughout.

Book excerpt: A sinfulnym results from taking an ordinary word and transforming it into an acronym that is either humorous, lewd, or profane. Author Steeling N. Clausey has brought readers Sinfulnyms, an outrageously funny and over the top new book. As the title suggests, these are not words one would utter at the dinner table, nor are they for the faint of heart. Sinfulnyms is intended for a more sophisticated and sensuous reader. Many of the sinfulnyms are accompanied by hilarious adult illustrations that capture the true essence of the sinfulnym. Clausey’s collection of new acronyms can be used liberally in e-mail and instant messaging. This is an innovative book that will broaden readers' vocabulary and horizons.

Discusses how the model of Roman imperialism, challenges to Aristotle’s theories of geography and natural slavery, and Cicero’s notion of the patria have had a pervasive influence on thought and politics throughout the Latin American region Brings together essays by specialists in art history, cultural anthropology and literary studies, as well as Americanists and scholars of the classical tradition Shows that appropriations of the Greco-Roman past are a recurrent catalyst for change in the Americas Calls attention to ideas and developments which have been overlooked in standard narratives of intellectual history

Book excerpt: Monasticism, in all of its variations, was a feature of almost every landscape in the medieval West. So ubiquitous were religious women and men throughout the Middle Ages that all medievalists encounter monasticism in their intellectual worlds. While there is enormous interest in medieval monasticism among Anglophone scholars, language is often a barrier to accessing some of the most important and groundbreaking research emerging from Europe. The Cambridge History of Medieval Monasticism in the Latin West offers a comprehensive treatment of medieval monasticism, from Late Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages. The essays, specially commissioned for this volume and written by an international team of scholars, with contributors from Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States, cover a range of topics and themes and represent the most up-to-date discoveries on this topic.

Book excerpt: The starting point generally acknowledged for the revival of Greek studies in the West is 1397, when the Byzantine Manuel Chrysoloras began to teach Greek in Florence. With his Erotemata, Chrysoloras gave Westerners a tool to learn Greek; the search for the ideal Greek textbook, however, continued even after the publication of the best Byzantine-humanist grammars. The four Greek Donati edited in this book - 'Latinate' Greek grammars, based on the Latin schoolbook entitled Ianua or Donatus - belong to the many pedagogical experiments documented in manuscripts. They attest to a tradition of Greek studies that probably originated in Venice and/or Crete: a tradition certainly inferior to the Florentine scholarship in quality and circulation, but still important in the cultural history of the Renaissance.
